i want to be a hosting reseller

i am seriously considering setting up a hosting reseller account.

i feel i am getting better at marketing and it would also be a good solution to provide with my webdesign skills.

i would just like to hear peoples thoughts on the diferent sources of reseller hosting?

i am looking at hostgater mainly because of the overwhelming praise for them here at wf.

but i have also heard about free reseller accounts? arent these just a referall program in essence?

which solution would you advise ? free or $25/month?

The cool thing about hostgator is the reseller support.

    Free reseller accounts?? Good lord...where?

I have a reseller account but not actively selling space because its not easy marketing your own hosting. There are literally thousands of active hosting companies / resellers out there, you have to go the extra mile if you want to sell your own hosting packages. Too much work for me to do at the moment.

I am thinking about doing it as well sometime in the future. And when the time comes I'm thinking about learning it from Daniel Brock and use his services. He currently has a WSO. Maybe you can contact him first asking for some advice.

Dealing with hosting customers is a nightmare!!!

By all means use a reseller account for your own sites but unless you have skin like a 100 year old Rhino steer clear of being a provider. the best source on the topic is the web hosting talk forum. webhostingtalk.com

"Why not joint venture with web designers and small web design agencies?
Offer them your hosting services and take a cut from the clients."

may be an option, but the main focus behind it is this:

i am a wordpress theme designer and website designer/graphic designer.

i was going to offer the hosting to my design clients so i can keep earning off them.

and i was also thinking of cross promoting to the 2.

ie, 50% of webdesign quote if hosted with xxx for minimum 6 months etc,,,

half price wordpress theme if hosted with xxxx.

i would probably try to market the hosting too as a hosting site, but main focus would be on already captured clients.

for $25 a month i can charge seriously low fees for hosting ($3-$4) and as long as i can get atleast 10-20 clients i will at least make some friday night money.

PS (i know $3-$4 isnt mega low, but offering it on a month by month basis (dont have to buy 12months in advance) is.

thanks for the link m thompson.

Would 100% agree with both comments. This is a VERY tough market - I did this back in the day when it was moderately lucrative and it was a HARD biz to be in.

WHT was the place to hook up withother hosting companies and catch the latest gossip etc etc

This biz has very firmly hit commodity status if you are going to make money you really need to either work out how to NOT make it a commodity or work out how scale it with massive volume (just my 2 cents)

Honestly I would look at another business idea...

I have a HG reseller account which I use for my own sites not to resell. It works very well and the support is excellent.

I tried to be a reseller a couple of years ago but didn't get any customers. Personally I would avoid it, it seems a lot of work for little $ and hosting is about having 1000's of customers and scalability, you could be better off as an affiliate for hostgator and get the client to sign up via your link for an easy $50 (or thereabouts can't remember exactly what the commission is).

The only exception might be if you can charge $50 a month for hosting - some people pay these crazy prices as they don't understand how cheap it can be.

Going up against all the large hosting companies would be fairly futile so you have the right idea of marketing to your existing clients, that is what I do. This will allow you to keep some of the customer problems down if you screen out the pita customers early in the process.

I would not try and compete price wise though, charge more and give more and you will be better off. What I do is support the site itself as long as a client hosts with me so that when they break something (and most will) I go in and fix it for them, basically I give site support and not just for hosting issues. This is something that they will not be able to get somewhere else and it lets you charge a premium over the other guys. I have had clients move elsewhere to save money and then come back when they found the personal service was not there anymore.

Keep your monthly rate structure fairly high but when they sign up give them an option to sign up for a year at a discount(I give three months free). A lot will go for that, they feel like they are saving money and you lock them in for a year and since the beginning rates are good you still come out way ahead. Not sure of the exact number but my clients on shared hosting avg somewhere in the $11-$12 range per month even with the yearly discounts. It is way better to have 50 customers at $12 then 200 at $4 in my opinion. The same amount of money and less problems.

thanks for the opinions people, has really helped me out.

ive decided im going to do it, tweaked following the last posted advice

what i need to know now is about setting up the hosting site.

what am i going to have to do to get this up and running? (ie, what scripts "buy buttons, package selects, etc") will i need to intergrate into the site, and which of the 2 providers for billing should i go with?

        whmcs / whm auto pilot????

will setting up the "buy buttons" be as simple as adding an affiliate link to a site?

or will i need a specialist cms system for this to work effectivley?

If you are going to be adding it as an added service
to your current "product" line then I'd look for
whatever offers you the most hands off service
as you do not want to spend your time as a customer
service rep but your time marketing your business
or handling the things you do best
