$1000 a month to invest - What would you do?

Hi all,

On Friday I found out that I have just got a really good new job which pays well. Instead of spending my extra money at the pub, I would like to invest a minimum of $1000 a month on building an online business.

I would like to ask - What would you spend that on?

I am thinking content content content, but I am pretty new to this and might be wrong?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Pete

If i were you i'd put the eggs into different baskets. first, invest in money market mutual funds, second roth IRA, third domain names.

    just my $0.02

How about outsourcing people to create products for you (ebooks/scripts/audio whatever tickles your fancy) and then outsourcing traffic generation etc to drive traffic to these products, therefore creating long term income streams.

    Cheers,

Thanks for that! I think this is the kind of thing I am looking for. I would like to build an online business that I can grow over the next 3 years and then live off it full time.

Anthony, what you mean by "outsourcing traffic generation"? Do you know folks, who will do that?

Spend it on PPC to build a list.

Thats what I will do with all my spare cash after university finishes in 6 weeks time.

It should be pretty easy to build a large list fast. Then you can JV and brand your own stuff to sell.

Please give this serious consideration as for all my time and efforts on IM this seems to be the best course.

No time wasting chasing free traffic and you have an asset.

Thanks Gareth, that sounds like a good idea.

Would you use the content network to build the list?

Judging by your username, you're an SEO expert? So you could also think about having a membership site related to teaching others the ins and outs of SEO optimisation etc..

Even 100 members at $27/month is a nice little income stream and not too hard to achieve.

    Good luck!

27$ in a month it is, not enough, at me there is a site which to me brings already the income 20 $ in a month, but it only the beginning.

Invest on new website and domains, trace the trends and pre-build all trendy keywords!

Build up the traffic with SENuke, articlemarketingautomation.com, traffickahuna.com.

Host your own autoresponder with autoresponseplus. Build your list on all your website for all the niches!

Research on ezinearticles.com and outsource someone to create product for you, sell your product with affiliate traffic!

...and Submit all your site with directory maximizer.

    m...what else....

I think the common denominator here is build a list.

Rather than paying for advertising, i think I might use the money to build links etc. and have a website that ranks for my major keywords.

      1) Before you start spending the money you need to decide about your business model. Once you know what kind of business you want to create make a 3-year plan including what to do and what you want to earn.

So the first money to spend might be on several info products that describe the different business models, like affiliate marketing, selling your own products, adsense business, flipping sites and domains, etc. etc.

Once your plan is established do not deviate from this plan, even if tons of other business opportunities are presented to you.

      2) In the beginning spend the money to get some quality software tools.
For an internet business in any case that is a quality web editor (dreamweaver recommended), a quality graphics software (photoshop elements) and a good SEO software (internet business promoter recommended).

If you go into affiliate marketing or selling your own products you also need a quality autoresponder from the start. Many recommend aweber, I prefer having a selfhosted AR like autoresponse plus.

      3) Once your plan and tools are in place start building the business fast using the help of freelancers.

I agree with Ralf. Until you know exactly what you want to do, it would be very easy to waste a lot of money without having anything to show for it. Decide on a plan and buy only what you need to accomplish the next step. Save the rest. You'll need it. Once you have a going business and know what it needs you're likely to regret every penny chasing down side paths.

Your biggest problem is going to be what I like to call "opportunity overload" where you start with something that you think is going to make you a millionaire... and then 3 days in you start to lose faith with your "plan"... and subsequently start to develop another one.

If this happens (and it probably will), you'll start to feel a sense of incompitence and yearning to just do "something" that will make you a nice return. You'll start to "diversify" into other things which then dilute your focus and will ultimately lead to your failure.

Here's what I recommend (and you'll get TONS of responses here):

          1) Decide on HOW you want to make a return on your investments

Do you want to sell your own products with an online brand or do you want to just harvest profits from a secret affiliate site network?

How much work do you want to do to keep the business "ticking over"?

Do you just want your money to make you more money with "passive income" or do you want to be able to build a business that can grow and grow in the future?

          2) Once you've got an idea about HOW you want to make your return, decide on the best WAY to achieve that 'dream'

If you want to build up a brand so that you have "fans" who will buy your $347 product then you'll have to do a LOT of trust & value-building to get your business to the point where you want.

If you want to just build an affiliate network reaping profits from already successful products, then decide on how many sites / blogs you will need to make and then research the best types of affiliate sites to build.

If you want to get rich from a membership site, then use your money to make one in a niche you like ;-)

--- See where this is going? You've got to have GOALS which you can make a strategy around...

          3. Decide on the best COURSE OF ACTION for you

After researching how you could achieve your 'dream' decide on the best way to do it. I.E if you want to build an affiliate site network - will the sites be blogs or sites or just Squidoo lenses? How many will you make / outsource every week?

          4. Stop reading this forum for the first 3 months of your venture

This was a KILLER for me - people posting success stories always made me divert my attention from one strategy to another. Just forget about this place and the people in it until you get your business off the ground.
This is very important advice for anyone starting out. Pick a plan and stick to it. Don't get sucked in to the "latest craze." When I first started out I tried everything under the sun and only ended up spending a lot of money with very little to show for it.

            Pete and Fellow Warriors,

Assuming you already have a (even a Free Social Network) web site somewhere, with a Blog, and some way to Build a List, and some way to Monetize your site(s), Right?! ...

Then nowadays I would Recommend spending the $1,000 a month on:
            1) Having Writers "ghostwrite" Articles for you, that you may either (DIY) and/or ...
            2) Pay someone to Post All of these Articles on (All of) your Blog(s) (and Social Networking sites), submit them through Article Submission services and Directories, etc.
            3) Either DIY (do it yourself) and/or Pay someone to Bookmark All of Your Blog Postings, Articles Posted elsewhere, your web pages, etc.
            4) (Eventually) you may (chose to) repackage these Articles as one or more e-Books, PLR Article Packages, other info products, etc. and Sell them too! you know?

IMHO, nowadays, Articles/Blog Postings have more "Staying Power" and More Value in terms of delivering Targeted Traffic/Visitors to your sites than say PPC Ads, but ...

Other Warriors may disagree with this opinion, yes? you know?

and we may discuss it further herein, but ...

That's my current opinion / recommendation, so ...

            I hope this all helps!

No man - just stop playing games -- thats the problem with this Im stuff.

You can straight out BUY targeted traffic that WILL join your list.

Start with regular adwords and optimize your sqeeze page conversion rate.

Than blast you best keywords on content network afterwards. You can site target with banners too. But just start with regular adwords first.

There are plenty of courses on adwords. You will need to track and optimize and ...

      Just focust on that man.

Yes you will definitely get opportunity overload now. I too had some money to invest and started with a small website - but it came with loads of free advice and meetings and training - still doing some training now but definitely a better investment when you can meet successful people face to face and benefit from genuine advice that actually works.

Okay well if you want to start affiliate marketing - go straight to Chris Rempel at Confessions of a Lazy Super-Affiliate

Buy his book and his VIP reports and then stay away from ANY OTHER internet marketing material for a couple of months whilst you put his practices into motion.

He tells you everything from what niches to pick all the way through to how to set up your affiliate sites... and he's making a killing.

    Good luck!

Maybe you can think what you like to do in your pastime and build a site around it, for example you like taking care of your pet dog, then build a site for dog lovers to meet, include sticky features like a forum, mailing list etc.

The first task is to get people to visit your site regularly and then after that monetizing your site. Just my 2 cents.

For what it's worth, here's my take:

    1. Decide on an area of long-term interest, a topic which motivates you. I.E. stock market, losing weight, internet marketing, etc.

    2. Create an irresistable info product for people who have the same interest (pdf, audios, videos).

    3. Give it away free when people opt-in to your list.

    4. Drive targeted traffic to your opt-in page using PPC.

    5. Build a relationship with your list, emailing them once/week or so with valuable related content with a touch of humour and personality.

    6. Teach your list how to respond (take action) to your emails, always giving them something to click on (a link or to reply to you).

    7. When you're ready, ask them what their biggest challenge is (relating to the topic), create a product which addresses their challenge, and sell it to them.

Sounds simplistic, but if anyone does this properly, they might as well have the right to print money.

Me too. You can always browse Clickbank...etc for products to promote, however at the end of the day traffic is what gives you $$$.

If you have $1000, I would spend it on traffic generation and getting educated on how to get mass traffic to your site(s) - whether it's PPC or otherwise.

    Good luck!
