Competition to build an opt-in list??

Is it a good idea to have a competition to build your opt-in list??

I run an art blog and I was going to give away a free hardback book (by a very popular guy) to the winner in return for people signing up to my newsletter.

Thoughts?

    I did something similar with my blog. I was giving away one year subscriptions to SUCCESS magazine.

    I did not get good results with this promotion. I am sure part of the challenge was the lack of daily, targeted traffic.

    I took away that it is better to give everyone something for opting into your list . . . unless perhaps your one time giveaway is a superior product/service that people are not willing to go out and by themselves.
