WOW, Fantastico is EASY yet HARD

Hi,

I have used Fantastico many times to install WP, but this time I messed up somehow.

Here is the message I get:

The installation can not be completed:

- You cannot install more than one script in the root directory of a domain.

Click on the browser's Back button to fix reported errors.

I installed it fine the first time today, but I noticed I must have messed up the URL because it was www.mydomain.mainsite.com. I was using an addon domain and I didnt want it as a subdomain due to domain topic relevancy. I did some deleting in FTP and then removal on Fantastico of the WP blog, but now when I try to re-install it it gives me the message about about installing more than one script into the root directory of the domain, but I do not see anything to delete in my FTP or what not.

THanks

Augie Johnston

I've had this problem using Fantastico with Joomla and Wordpress installations, if you've previously done an install even if you delete all of the files in the root using ftp it doesn't let you perform another install.

To be honest I don't know the answer to this, but you can install the cms manually into the root without any problems. Thats what i have always had to do to resolve this.

You may ALSO be able to merely MOVE the directory. You may have to make some other modifications to the settings to handle the new directory/URL, but it shouldn't be difficult AND you can save most of your work!

Fantastico is a good resource but you have to be careful, 9 times out of 10 the version of the script it install will not be the most up to date version, I would reccomend extending your knowledge and going directly to the developer wesbite and downloading the latest version then installing it yourself manually, its a lot easier than you think and also good practice when you purchase a script that doesn't have a 1 click install.

Remember developers perform updates to fix security loopholes most of the time just be careful

I reinstalled many times and never had this problem.
Go to your cpanel and make sure that the wp folders and files are deleted.
    Then retry.

same here, I've never had a problem with multiple reinstalls as long as the original files are deleted

I had this error recently - as Sumit says, just look in the fantasticodata folder. Remove the entry for the site you need to correct. Fantastico should then allow you to start over.

I have used WP on both add-on and sub-domains ...hmm ...think the problem is you deleted in FTP ... go to C-Panel and delete WP from there if you still can ... in the past I have had to go on line and talk with the hosting account tech reps to solve problem.

Fantastico stores info in the root of your hosting (I'm taking about the level above the public_html directory) in a directory .fantasticodata. You might wanna delete that too after uninstalling and removing the mySql databases.

Why do you wanna install two scripts on the root? Each would have it's own "index.php" file. So, the first one will get overwritten anyway.

There's a pretty easy fix to this. I know because I had the same problem before. This link should help.

Cpanel: Fantastico error "You cannot install more than one script in root directory" - Web Hosting Technical Support Discussion Forum

I've started doing manual installs for my wordpress. It's not actually that hard because Wordpress does offer step-by-step instructions.

I've had that error a couple times - means I goofed somewhere.

I just delete and start over. If you installed in the root you can just go into cpanel and delete public_html and then recreate the public_html folder and start over.

I like fantastico but the only thing I hate is that the default "Privacy" setting is that your
sites can't get indexed by search engines.. It took a while for me to figure that out and it was no fun

Thanks everyone for the info. I really appreciate it. What I did to solve this issue was simple and worked.

I called up hostgator customer service and told them my problem and they fixed it instantly and Fantastico worked.

    Thanks again,
