Massive Twitter Following

I've got (what I consider) a medium twitter following of almost 11,000 users. For the most part I have built up my followers rather carefully and try to target my followers, i.e. I have chosen quality over quantity because I have found this gives me the most traffic to my site.

However, I could, using various tricks of the trade, expand that much more rapidly, but is there any point?

I'm curious if you get your following over, say, 50,000 and start making it to the top of the lists in your category in twellow and other listings if this has any advantage? Do you attract more attention in being big? Does size matter?

It seems like the more followers you have, regardless of quality, the more "free advertising" that you might get. Any truth to that?

Or is it just a big waste of time to pursue lower quality followers.

  • Good idea. You definitely get more free advertising, especially with those people who RT everything

    • People who retweet everything??
  • This is why twitter jsut keeps getting better and better the deeper you get.

  • If your following the same amount of followers you have or even more. Your literally wasting your time.

    • Why? It takes almost no time to follow someone back. Am I missing something?
    • If you read all their Tweets all the time then it can become quite time consuming and can be considered as a waste of time.
