Has this really done a lot of damage?

Last year, Google introduced something
called SideWiki.

When they did, I recall people calling
all-hell on the abomination... but I'm
wondering something and consider this
a "follow up" - did it do the damage
some claimed it will do?

It seems to me the wave died down
(I may be wrong though) but the new
wave looks like it's Buzzing around.

What do you think?

I was one who was really upset about it, however, other than the knowledge that it's there does slightly annoy me from time to time I hardly think about it.

I can't see nor have I heard of any harm from it yet. Of course the jury is still out.

I haven't seen a lot of effects of it, at least in my efforts. The thing is that there is so many people and methods for attacking various fields of IM that one thing Google introduces can be overcome by the millions of IM people out there, and it's only a matter of time before the millions beat the giant, at least in my opinion.

I dont think most people even use this, I don't think it's had much of an impact at all.

To tell you the truth, I haven't really looked at it. From what wikipedia says, it sounds pretty harmless. HEY, ALEXA is probably more intrusive. And A LOT of people still seem to think alexa has some sort of magic or whatever so they can be accurate. That said, there IS the definite possibility I am missing something.

      I didn't know it was you =)
      You're still thinking SideWiki's
      potential for damage is high?

      It sounds harmless, alright.
      But because people could
      literally vandalise your site
      with a sidewiki comment...

      I think that's what most
      people are worried about.

      Competitors coming onto the
      site and posting stuff like
"This stuff sucks, I bought it
      and it's a waste of time/money.
      However, this product here..."

      And they include a link.

      Traffic stolen.

If you have a kid, you can no longer allow him/her on any site that does not ban it. Even using parental controls to limit the sites they can go on does not protect them from what may be on the sidewiki. In my opinion, any parent that allows unsupervised internet use under 18 yrs old may as well just buy their kids porn.

And any parent that doesn't may as well lock them in the basement chained to the wall.

Personally, I think the porn is less destructive.

At one time there was the fear that this product would take off, but it never did so there is little worry now. It could created problems if a competitor started posting lies about your product or service. This did happen a friend of mine. Well, a person created a web site saying his products do not work. My friend says it cost thousands of dollars to take him to court and sue.

This man never bought a single product, yet posted negative reviews. He must be a psychic or something to be able to review a product he never uses.
