Important Newbie advice

Hi,

Though this is my first post I have been reviewing this forum for the past 3 years while quietly growing my internet business. I am very fortunate earn a full-time income in this way and I have now decided to come out of the shadows because I see newbies and the not so newbies making the same mistakes over and over again.

1) Latching on to the next new gimmick- these days its facebook ads- don't make me laugh - you need deep pockets for that one too- remember sites like this are social sites where people go to meet friends and chillax, not spend money. The conversion rate is VERY low and you can quickly burn through thousands in a single day by click happy people who are curious but have no intention of buying.

2)SEO- even the SEO Gurus spend more on PPC than SEO yet you buy their SEO courses in the hope of free traffic- There is no such thing as a free lunch in IM

3)Buying websites with high traffic- think about it, if a website had high 'free traffic' month in and month out, and that traffic was targeted traffic- that means that these people would buy and the website owner would have a very large and responsive list. Then why in the world would that owner sell that website for less than $50,000 at a minimum??

What could happen instead is that this high traffic is paid for from some CPA network for 2 to 3 months before the site is put up for sale. For 3 months that site according to analytics gets more than 10,000 unique visitors... you Mr/Ms Newbie buys this site and labours over it for months but then all that glorious traffic suddenly disappears- your fault

Conclusion- Tecnology moves fast and can dramatically affect the way we transact over the internet, but like in the off-line world. The fundamental rules of succes and growth remains the same , the genius is how you apply those rules, like in any walk of life how you connect the dots is what will make all the difference.

Nothing has fundamentally changed in the IM success formula over the last 5 years ... Remember SIR Newbie before you latch on to the next very expensive craze.

Please provide some proof of #2. Thanks. If it's just your opinion, you need to say so or you'll confuse the very newbies you're trying to help.

Re: #3, you don't know all the reasons why people sell sites, do you? I don't either. I know many many people who have bought established sites and been perfectly happy. Got just what they paid for. I've sold a few sites myself for less than they were worth to me over the long run. A lot less. The mistake you make is in assuming a website owner would always prefer steady and relatively small amounts month after month vs. one bigger lump sum payout.

    Welcome to the conversation,Sean.

I hate to throw a wet blanket on your first post, but item two is just your experience, it doesn't hold true for everyone. I'm getting over 2,000 visitors a day strictly on SEO. I've never bought traffic in my life. My traffic was even higher than that before my site was hacked and my rankings were damaged. It's on the climb again though. I hope to have it back over 1 million visitors for this year, all due to SEO practices.

I have lists in 6 different niches and I've never used PPC; I only use article marketing and forum posting. I definitely disagree with #2, and I've sold a site with high traffic because i had too many projects going on. It's good to have you posting, but make sure you have all your facts.

Traffic is the biggest want and so is also where the worst scams are - be very wary of anyone who can sell you traffic.

      Indeed.

I was talking to another tenant of our business center the other day. She was paying an SEO company £80 (UK pounds) per month for targeted traffic.

      The result?

34 visitors in the 6 weeks since I started checking up on it for her.

Needless to say, I advised her to cancel immediately, which she did.

      Cheers,

      Neil

Facebook PPC being expensive is far from the truth. You either have just had bad experiences or have no knowledge whatsoever in regards to effective Facebook PPC advertising.

We currently use Facebook PPC as an advertising medium for pennies on the dollar and average 15 - 20 leads daily with a budget of $2 - $4 spent on advertising.

On average we spend $5 and make back $20 on a day to day basis via Facebook PPC advertising.

There are very few things in life that are 100% rules . I think if there is a 95% probability then we can assume this to be accepted as fact more or less.

The key to Face book ads is demograhic profiling. Much more so than with google. Faceook gives you the tools but you must know your market. You may get lucky but most often not.

I am happy to acknowledge that you are doing well in your face book campaign but your experience will not be the norm.

You will not be the average 'get in on the gold rush I don't really have the time to truly understand my market' marketer.

My opiioons are focused in the 99% , there will always be exceptions.

So enough people don't use Google? Is it that there are no pages that come up when millions of people do searches? Or do people only click on the adwords and skip the main listings?

I'm sorry thats the worse take away lesson of three years I have ever seen.

Great advice there.. I'm pretty sure its not just the newbies that are chasing fads, even intermediate or expert marketers do sometimes.. who can withstand the urge and temptation of quick cash?

Instead, its more of remembering that IM is a long term business that one must invest tie and effort to excel in.. so even if they get lost in the path of fads, just remebering this advice will bring them back to the right path again- investing in long term things like list building and slowly growing their business!
