Need some input

I would like some input if possible.

First some background.

About 5-6 years ago I started up a file hosting site, it grew big pretty fast and kept growing until about 2 years ago. Had to move the servers and they where all damaged in shipment, result = 10TB of data loss.

I got the site up again and expained what happend etc.
Users uploaded a lot of files but it never reached the previous traffic and earnings (traffic dropped 90%).

Shortly after the server accident google closed the adsense account, since I wasnt able to control the files being uploaded. Which was another 90% drop in earnings. During all this time I have been a member of fastclick, casale and more. However, had problems even covering the monthly hosting bills.

So, about 6 months ago I desided to closed the site down and park the domain (still get ~150 euro per day from parking alone).

Site statistics the day I closed it:

Registred users: ~ 1.150.000
Uploaded files: ~ 800.000

Never goes a day without thinking about starting it up again.
Have been thinking about running it as a file mirror service, less expensive.

The difference is the fact I will save a copy of the file which people can download directly from our servers without delay or speed limit, for a monthly fee. This will however almost be the only income.

Something similar to: Gazup! Uploads your files to multiple file hosts - Gazup!

Guess I can use the database to kickstart it.

Problem is, I never (never) emailed any of the users before, some of them registred along as 5-6 years ago. So guess I will receive ALOT of spam complaints (note: I got email, first and last email of all members).

The question is, is it worth it? Should I just drop the idea and move on to something new?
What will happend if I email all those users at ones?

  • Its got to be worth another go... aslong as it dont cost you a fortune to get it up and running again, i would send a email out explaining what happened, you could expect a good % of people to at least think about it..
  • Its not cheap to start up again, but everything has it's price.

However, im more worried about the list since it will be the only way to kickstart it - starting all over from 100% scratch is not worth it. The list is big, which I think is the biggest problem, dont know really
