2 crimes most warrior members commit

I was just writing a post about something similar on my blog, when I noticed there are 2 big crimes most Warrior members are committing and maybe not even aware of it.

These crimes are losing them potential branding rights, list building rights and even sales.

Crime number 1:

An empty signature file bring you ... absolutely ZERO. You are missing out on an absolutely massive amount of traffic. Trust me, I've only been on here two weeks and my signature alone brings me over 100 people to my blog daily form this very forum.

Use your signature to promote:

  1. Your product
  2. Your website or blog
  3. Brand yourself
But what if you do not have a product or website yet? There is no excuse.
Everybody can start a wordpress blog for free, hosted by wordpress. Use it to give more information about yourself, what you hope to do and what you hope to learn. If you write good useful posts here on the forum people will visit you blog, I already told you that.

But here is what I do extra. I added a mailing list to my blog. This very Warrior Forum is responsible for over 100 subscribers to my mailing list, and all of whom visited my blog because of my contribution via my posts.

Not having a signature is costing you.... You have no excuse, make it today.

Crime number 2:

Not having a picture or 'Avatar' with your posts. WF offers these two free services, the ability to have a signature and the ability to have an avatar but for some reason, people waste this simple marketing opportunity.

Adding an avatar makes it easier for people to spot your post, thus allowing you to brand yourself for FREE. It does not have to even be your picture, but any picture is a good start.

Trust me, some of the more respected warriors love the fact that most people do not have an avatar. Why? It makes their posts stand out more. Think about it, when you typically see a new thread here on WF, there are lots of replies. Nobody has the time to read it all so we skim. We read the first few entries, then we scroll down until we see a picture, where we are likely to stop and take another read. This picture where you stop is usually the avatar!

That is exactly what we have been trained to do with these long ass sales pages. You read the top and scroll down, looking a little closer at the pictures. It's no wonder people do the same on forums!

I call these two both crimes, as it takes very little time to setup and will multipy your marketing efforts, but for some reason people do not seem to care about it.

So, if you haven't already done it, make your signature and avatar today.

He did not make a negative comment, he is trying to help you. You should make your signature as anchor text, it will help you with the Search Engines and also make you look like you know what you are doing. Some people here think that you are a newby if they do not see the anchor text so they do not click in the link. Maybe you do not need it since you already got 100s of clicks throught your signature. In the other one hand I agree with you, everybody should have and avatar and a signature...good tip, thanks.

I declare negative as just picking out what they think is a bad point and saying nothing about the post, thus a negative comment.

Anyway, no more dwelling on it. Improving on it is always good, but making a start is the best of all. Maybe because I was only promoting one thing is my signature it worked well, but I have changed it to test if your suggestion actually makes such a big difference.

He wasn't picking out a bad point. He was trying to help and improve something you said. That's what a forum is for...to discuss and improve ideas and help. I don't see ANYTHING negative about what he said.

You thought that was negative? Stick around these parts for a little longer. Tony was not being negative he was being helpful to you and others who read the OP.

He is spot on. You'll get even more marketing/branding value out of your sig if you take up Tony's suggestion so don't be so sensitive when someone is trying to help you.

I lost track somewhere in the hundreds, how many times I've harped on this. If you want to be a marketer, forget about being anonymous. People like to buy from people they (feel they) know.

I'm not here to sell anything to the visitors to this forum, and I'm certainly not here to clue others in to my profitable projects. Therefore, you will not find a signature with links or a picture of me as an avatar. I prefer to remain anonymous on this forum.

No "crime has been committed", and you can "harp on this" all you want.

Everyone is ultimately greedy, to one degree or another. There is a way to go about things with out exposing ultierior motives. Even the act of charity, in my opinion is egotistical, because we need to forfill our sense of righteiousness. Yes you're right in naming the typical War Crimes. I'm a criminal in this respect and I shall attempt to repent or do right within time! It's embarassing. Actually, Have A Nice Day! (now my soul is being cleansed)

Careful how well you emulate. Even sig files can be perceived as copyrighted property, and you may be perceived as unoriginal or worse plagaristic if you emulate too closely. (ask me how I know this.:rolleyes

    Hi Colin

    You beat me to it.

For me, a name is more important than a picture. An alias is OK if you sign your posts with your real name. But if you don't, I'm thinking "what are you trying to hide?"

Nothing maybe, but that's not how it comes across.

Unfortunately, as some of us here have found out, having an avatar,
especially if it's a photo of yourself, can present a problem.

I won't go into the details.

Having said that, I don't let those problems force me to take mine down.

However, I can completely understand why some people have removed
    theirs.

      Haha, good stuff.

To the OP though, you're right about having the avatar. If you want to make it in any market, you are going to want people to know you in that martket. It helps to be able to see the person you're dealing with.

Some people don't put anything in their signature because they want to keep their niches secret.

Common sense, why would you want to expose your niches to 1,000's of marketers?

What you posted only applies to around 30-40% of people, let us be honest - in most cases what you have posted is not relevant.

If you are selling in the dating market for example why would you want to brand yourself on a marketing forum?

    Isn't the target market.

A picture of yourself in your avatar is risky, many sleazeballs from elsewhere may take your personal photo and find other uses for your photo on the internet which I won't get into here. So no thanks, a picture of a car will do for me.

    "Crime" number 3:

Whining when somebody makes a positive comment that you somehow take as a personal affront. That's a quick way to lose credibility.

This is a forum. People offer comments. That's what makes it work. The comment in question wasn't negative. They weren't pointing out something they thought was wrong, just a way to IMPROVE on the initial suggestion.

To get confrontational over it is petty and not too bright.

In fact, the ONLY negativity I see is coming from your reaction to a decent suggestion.

I can guarantee you I'll get attacked over this "branding" comment. Some people are convinced branding themselves is the only way to go. But it's not. Step Three: Highlight and Copy the link (into your clipboard)

Step Four: HIGHLIGHT the anchor text

Step Five: with the anchor text highlighted and the link in your clipboard, now CLICK THE LINK BUTTON and PASTE the url into the spot provided.

Because it will match it with the highlighted text on your page, you'll get what you are looking for.

Is my avatar and sig line visible?

I can view the sig line, but it does not appear that my picture is showing -- unless I log into the user CP.

Help! I don't want to commit a warrior crime.

          [Edit: Nevermind. Got it fixed.]

            Warrior Crime, thats quite funny.

I'm glad my post has helped some of you. Yeah, your right, there are a few other crimes we can add, but I think these two are the most common ones here on the forum, and perhaps easiest to fix.

My avatar is designed specifically to make people remember my face, hence the extreme close-up! So if Warriors see me in person, they'll think immediately "Hey, I remember that face, I saw it on Warrior forum!"
Simply put, I'm using my avatar to etch my face into your brain! So you'll think of me every day!

I can only speak for myself, but I don't think that's working for you. I remember entire faces, not close-ups of eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Your "features" are out of context because we can't see how they fit with the rest of your head. I wouldn't know you from Adam if I passed you on the street. What stands out the most is your nose, and who remembers people by their nose unless it's like Jimmy Durante or something?

I still use my nickname...I'm hoping that it will catch on like "Prince" or "Britney" or "Manson"???? It has been my nickname since I was a kid and it's what most of my close friends call me so...

As far as not using my real name and why I only recently used my pic? Internet Marketing and some of the products I promote (relationship/get her back/get him back) were actually used against me in a custody case and it cost me and my children dearly. Now everything that I write is under a pen name and all my sites are privacy protected.

Common sense, why would you want to expose your niches to 1,000's of marketers?

When someone doesn't have an avatar I can't help myself but to think that either:

    1) They are butt ugly and don't want anyone to know
    2) They are self conscious and are concerned what others think about their appearance
    3) They are concerned about privacy
    4) They are one of those trolls and scammers that keep coming back over and over and over and over and over with a new id.

That being said, you don't have to use your real picture as an avatar-it can be anything. A stock photo, a logo, just something. It will look better than NOTHING.

As for signatures, some people don't have websites/blogs, they don't like the way they look and want to improve it before they show it off, or they are under construction and not ready for views.

PS. I also agree there should be Paul Myers warning sticky. And it should also include his phone number cause calling him at 6am and singing to him always cheers him up

Call it being negative or being a debbie downer if you want, frankly I dont really care !!!!

But it is just odd that someone who just joined the Warrior Forum in the past few weeks and is now trying to persuade and almost lecture others that they NEED to utilize the Signature Area at Warrior Forum to burst open the Traffic gates to their Sites and Blog.

Just seems to me its exploitation from someone that hasnt really earned the right yet to do this.

Personally, I think someone should 'earn their keep' here at Warrior before they go off balyhooing on and on about how much Traffic you can get here by utilizing the Signature.

This is not the greatest way to introduce yourself at Warrior and not a great way to network here for that matter.

Hell, I have been here 2 years now and I still dont feel like I have the right to exploit Warrior with my Signature !! (btw, you guys know who you are that do have Signatures and dont exploit at all)

The fact of the matter is the Warrior Forum has paid me back many times over and over and over again by just listening and observing and conversing with some of the greatest Internet Marketing minds in the World.

And for that I am totally in debted to you guys here !!

My Signature ??......... Hell, I am not even worthy !!!

Discrat, I'm pretty sure you are referring to the troll's that use their signature to spam the WF and then disappear or those that just use the signature to promote links to their totally useless products; hoping to make a sale. Frankly I agree that those bottom feeders do exploit the signature file and it is indeed a crime against the WF.

But I'm afraid you may give some of the new folks and even some that have been around for some time the wrong impression about using the signature file. And that wrong impression is "It's a bad thing to use the signature file, when you are trying to get backlinks and traffic to your site."

Folks, IMO that is the reason and purpose of the signature file. As long as you use it responsibly and don't break the WF Signature File Rules you won't be "exploiting" your fellow Warriors.

As an example of that I have clicked on 2 of the sigs in this thread. Why? Because I wanted to see what their offer is and to determine if I can use it to grow my business. One of them can help me and the other one doesn't fit into my business plan.

Good input Ken. I was suprised when I installed tracking software on my log, and found a lot of traffic was coming as a result of my signature on here. You, prove once again, that although often it is overlooked, it is a very simple and useful marketing tool.

Ken makes a great point here, and it's a huge reason why, at the time I'm posting this, I don't have any sort of sig file. (One may appear here several days after the fact when I eventually create a new one.)

Though I've been blessed to be of help to a lot of people here at times, the fact remains that I can go months without posting anything. In fact, I'm just coming out of one of those long cold spells right now.

        Why?

Because I have something to sell of course!

But I have my own ethical ethos that I must follow, which basically states:

"If I'm going to ask others to do something for me (i.e., buy my stuff), then I am absolutely required to spend some time up front giving back to the community FIRST."

And that is exactly what I'm doing - giving first before I make any attempt to receive.

We can argue until the cows come home about the moral/ethical piece and whether or not this is really necessary or even wise in a market niche well-known for its ruthless, cutthroat sharks.

But I really don't care about them.

I have to run my business in a way that allows me to sleep comfortably at night and have the ability to look at myself in the mirror each morning, knowing that I've done right by as many people as humanly possible.

And that simply requires me to give first and leave my sig file blank, knowing that I'm leaving money on the table, but allowing me to feel good about the money I bring in later - knowing it was made on the back of the solid, helpful advice I freely gave away up front.

Yeah, maybe there are some things I did not think about in the original post related to why this may not be of concern to some people.

    People who
    1) Want to keep their niches secret.
Stealing seems common place on the net so yeah agree on this one. However I would still use the avatar as it would help people recognise each other at offline events (gold mine for developing yourself) - but understand, it's not so important for this group.

    2) Serious Internet marketers who want an alias identity. Guess it's a case of being a celebrity online, and you get swamped with pm's. I'm not quite there yet, so my avatar stays!

I disagree with a post above which suggest they do not feel worthy to use the signature to promote. I feel I'm the most worthy person in the world... wanting to protect my niche or remaining annonomous for genuine reasons is fine, but feeling unworthy would never enter my mind.

Even with the exclusions I mention here, I think the response to this post does imply that this does apply to a large proportion of WF memers.

Those who agree with my OP, but have not taken action.... WHY NOT?

And yeah, just to say a thank you back to people here. I did not think of excluding certain groups in my OP, so I have learnt something just by trying to give something and that is invaluable (sometimes we get stuck on one idea and forget to look at the big picture), that's why sometimes perhaps improvements or suggestions can initially be seen as negative comments, something else I learnt these last 24 hours too.

I think that is a great reminder to have has on my Birthday and I'm happy to have been reminded, and have my whole life to keep improving on it still.

    why is this Steve? Stealing?

Unfortunately, as some of us here have found out, having an avatar,
especially if it's a photo of yourself, can present a problem.

I won't go into the details.

No, taking your avatar and doing some not so nice things with it on
      parody sites and other forums.

      I'll leave it at that.

I can't say I was agreeing with what you said but opinions differ. However you were absolutely spot on with your interest in what Steven was referring to.

Possibly its just how late it is but I spilled tea all over myself when he mentioned a parody site using his head.

I instantly envisioned someone he had flamed on here making a porno with his head pasted over the original. As I said tea went everywhere LOL

Dennis definitely does sell WSO's as I bought one of his not to long ago, and I doubt I am alone.

          Cheers,

humm I fear the next we be hearing is that you need 50 'Thank you's' before you can start to use your signature file!

So can somebody who supports not using your sig until you have given first, please tell me where the mark is, to show you have contributed enough?? How does one know when he has passed the mark?

(Not to brag but I have over 60 thanks, which should show I do like to contribute, but I get the feeling most on here are just judging how long I have been here and not what I could have to offer)

              Hi Dee,

2 big crimes most Warrior members are committing and maybe not even aware of it.

              There is no excuse.

These crimes are losing them potential branding rights

Not having a signature is costing you....

You have no excuse, make it today.
              Someone else said -

              every click counts.
Some of us have hardly ever had a link in our sig, never run a WSO, don't advertise our contact details or encourage PMs or any kind of networking and don't give out testimonials like confetti for a free link or a free product.

The OP seems to be based upon false assumptions - one of which is that the only way to brand yourself is as someone who must wring as much as possible out of every action and always get the maximum return on their time and energy investments - even within a community environment.

This could be perceived as negative branding, and ignores the power of differentiation, particularly in an environment where the majority all act as if they are desperate in many ways - screaming red headlines, multiple flashing animated banners, false urgency and scarcity overload, hyperbole and outright fabrications etc etc.

Then there are a few people who take pride in always leaving some money on the table.

Your OP is probably helpful to a percentage of people, but it's a mistake to assume that it's 100% and the way it was worded could have been less arrogant and condescending.

Perhaps some could learn from asking why wouldn't someone do the things that you recommend?

but I get the feeling most on here are just judging how long I have been here and not what I could have to offer
Speaking for myself, if I'm judging at all, it's purely on the quality of the content of the posts that people make and what that tells me about them.

I think what Roger is saying (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that forum
                marketing is not for everybody.

Some people just like to hang out, chat, maybe learn a few things and
                be low key about it.

Everybody has their own business model, and to suggest that if you're not
doing the things you mention you're not making the most of your time here,
                well, that's just plain ridiculous.

I'd be almost willing to bet that there have been at least a couple of people
here who read some great tips, maybe bought a terrific WSO and then
went out and built themselves a 6 or even 7 figure business without being
a forum tramp. Sorry if the word offends, but I can't think of any other
that gets the point across of what I'm trying to say.

In other words, forums have many uses.

Having a sig and an avatar isn't the be all and end all and is not a
                requirement.

Having said that, I'm all for anybody who wants to have a prominent
                presence in a forum.

                If that's your thing.

    1. A person doesn't want to advertise their product here via their signature. So what? Maybe their product doesn't conver well with this crowd, or maybe it's in a niche that is inappropriate for this forum (like adult producte);

    2. A much bigger crime than not using an avatar, is hiding behind a screenname. You should be using a forum like this to brand yourself, not hide from people! I'd ratjher do business with a person who uses their real name, and no picture, over someone who uses a cute sceeenname, and an avatar any day.

This comes as a caveat, some people use the signature link and write worthless posts just to get some back links to their site.

(Overall, I think everyone can be guilty of this at times).

I think that when people know who you are and what you are about, they tend to flock towards you especially if you put out decent content and really want to help others instead of wanting their money all the time!

Consumers I think are becoming smarter and numb to the same ole money getting tactics.
