Web Design For The COLOR BLIND??? Come on, I can't take anymore people!

Here's a comment I just got on one of my blogs:

Hi there. I just needed to advise you that some elements of your website are hard to comprehend for me, as I am color blind. I have tritanopia, however there are other kinds of color blindness which will also experience difficulties. I will read most of the web page Okay, and those parts I have difficulties with I can read by using a special browser. However, it would be great if you could consider we color-blind people whilst undertaking your next web site design. Many Thanks.
This site, LOL, has 3 colors. Blue, white, and black lettering. It's a very plain wordpress blog.

Should I start designing my sites in just black and white?

The site in question is articleparticles (dot) com

Now tell me what name and website he used in the comment?

Or which of those words was actually a link?

Unless this is a real comment then it is very good comment spam that made you think twice and probably approve and reply to it.

I have not approved the comment - but it contains no links within the comment itself. The poster did use a web address that will link to their name - oh crap.

        I just looked it up.

        My Site

Must be the type of colors on my site?

          Ding Ding Ding!

If in fact they are trying to do some SEO then this is a very good method but more black hat than anything else.

You go and put up a temporary page that say's its under construction or a non promotional personal blog with a few small posts.

Then spam links like mad and they will stick and get approved!

When you feel you have enough links or after a week or two then simple just delete the temporary page or blog and you get all that link juice and its highly doubtfull that your comment or link will be re-visited or moderated by the owner of the blog or site you got the link from.

Well, I thought about that too - but that is looking extremely legit with that story and no links at all in the comment itself.

Author name that would link looks more like a name and not a keyword. I would think if you were going to go through all that trouble you'd sneak in a kw as the author name at least if you are really going for SEO.

Anyway, there is no analytics code on there (although I guess if the page is a temp page they wouldn't bother anyway)

Now should I go for this new niche of creating wordpress themes for the visually impaired?

What else do the visually impaired on the web need? Design tools for the visually impaired?

Should I then move on into the hearing impaired and create some giant letters for blogs, and some audio players that crank on 10?

Any ideas for the mentally impaired who may wish to visit me? Do I need to put rubber bumpers on the sidebars?

Where do I draw the line? How many people do I need to satisfy??? Would all these blog themes make a good WSO?

              Not always!

A name get's accepted alot more than a keyword and still provides the juice to your site which helps the other pages on it rank for whatever keyword they are targetting.

That being said ok the power of the link is less in terms of ranking for a keyphrase but still helps.

Maybe it is legit! Still i would just delete it and email them personally if they left an email.

I don't think so. The reader says that with a special browser they can read the difficult part of the blog. Though it's unfortunate this person has a sight problem, the majority of the readers do not. I'm sure most of the pages he/she must visit are difficult. I don't think you'll be doing yourself a favor by possibly alienating the majority of your readers with a bland page.
If anything, perhaps you should limit the amount of blue lettering you use, but otherwise...just my 2 cents.

There's a disclaimer on the tool's home page saying that it sometimes doesn't handle style sheets very well. It appears it's picking up the default background for the theme - the blue color. The only thing on the page with a default white background is the iframe for the ad blocks.

This is spam. I got a similar comment today. Anything akismet flags, if it's interestingto me, I strip off the URL and any links and go on and approve it.

The url was playnice . co . uk

Good points raised here, (well, what I could read of it). I am color blind (deuteranopia to be precise). I mostly use Opera browser (no idea if that changes anything), and a lot of this web page is a bit of a strain on my eyes. I know it is my problem to deal with, in truth, however it would be cool if you could consider color blind visitors while undertaking your next webpage design.

Wow, we must have some popular blogs.

I've got about 20 installed on my host, surprised he didn't hit them all up.

They mightn't be after link juice, just traffic. You believed their story; others will too. Some of these others will email this bloke and buy his template.

As for disregarding usability for things such as colour-blindness, I am sure there are some tips somewhere to prevent causing problems. Companies with a large web presence would surely consider these factors. A simple font-size adjustment button is one usability feature that is more widely used these days, especially with the financial industry where a lot of users are elderly and suffer from poor eye sight. They actually use and appreciate such measures to accomodate them.

It is all well and good to have a laugh at a comment like this (even though I think it has alterior motives) but it would be ignorant to dismiss it as not your problem.

Are you kidding? These days most "publishers" barely consider spelling and grammar to be their problem. Let alone fringe stuff like disabled people.

Oh, but the long tail is a good thing. Democratized media is a good thing. Um. Yeah.

Well exactly what percentage of the population are we talking about?

My father is colorblind, but he doesn't really surf the web and I've never heard him complain.

Just laughed when he'd wear one red sock and one green.

Can Color-Blind Users See Your Site?

Your story about your father reminds me of one of my favorite teachers in high school. He was famous for his wild color combinations, like neon orange shirts and lime green pants - at the same time. This was back when leisure suits, platform shoes and polyester clothes were all the rage. Even then, he stuck out.

Someone finally asked him about it, on one of the orange shirt, green pants days. He thought he was wearing brown pants and a tan shirt. From that day on, we always knew which days his wife forgot to lay out his clothes...

Looking at the designs and use of colours on some sites, quite a lot! It is about 10% I believe.

There is nothing wrong with your site. I was just trying to say that it isn't a silly requirement to have a site that caters to people with poor sight or colour blindness. That MS article has some good points and shows exactly what some people experience.

I know that blog comment was comment spam but that wasn't the point of the thread, correct? It was to do with the ridiculous request of designing a site with usability in mind. If people want a serious web presence where the use of a website is crucial then colour blindness is one usability test that should be undertaken.

It's not an uncommon condition, but my money is on
that being a clever form of comment spam

I had a comment spam a while back from some dude
claiming my blog looked weird on some browser (Iguana
or something) I'd never heard of. He even said practically
nobody uses the browser, yet was still informing me. It
didn't occur to me at the time that it was comment spam,
but now I'm thinking it was.

Send that person to this site and ask them if they would prefer you build your site more on the lines of this one...

If they live through the experience you may get some feedback on how much they have come to appreciate your site.
