How Do You Create Full-Page Ebook Cover?

I'm trying to figure out how to make my ebook cover image fill the entire cover page, edge to edge.

Here's an example of what 'I'm trying to do:

I'm using Word 2008 for Mac and am stumped.

Is there a way to do this without buying an Adobe product?

Hi deertrail, I can't quite remember how it's done on Word. If you like, you can send me the picture and I can make it into a standard page-size image for you, no sweat.

Hanz, thanks for the gesture, but I'd like to figure this out so I can do it for all my future ebooks and reports as well.

I don't think it's a image size issue but more a question of how to setup the Word document so it lets the photo extend right to the very edge of the page... I think?

No probs. I think what you can do is go to Format > Picture > click on Layout tab and then go to Wrapping Style and choose square and underneath that, go to Horizontal Alignment and choose Center.
And then go to Size tab and increase the size relatively until you're content with the end result. See if that works for you. If you haven't tried it already that is.

    Hi deertail,

    I don't use Word, but here's a possible workaround.

    1. Set all the margins: top, bottom, left and right to 0.

    2. Then there will be no border.

    3. For the remaining pages, put everything into a table (again, with no border).

    4. Set the table properties so it leaves the spacing you like.

    Hope that makes sense.

    All the best,
    Michael

      Hanz and Michael,

Each of your respective suggestions worked, although in both cases there was still a small white border around the image.

I'm guessing that's as good as it gets with Word.

Regardless, it looks a lot better... thanks for your help!

If you mean when you print it, that's a limitation of your printer. Consumer printers generally cannot print all the way to the edge of the page (what they call a bleed).

Ah yes, "bleed" is the word I was looking for... Yes, I'm sure it wouldn't have been a full bleed if I printed the document.

In my case, I was hoping for a way to create a full-bleed cover when I convert from Word to PDF.

The solutions offered worked well but still don't give me a full-bleed when I convert to PDF and view with Adobe Reader and Preview.

I'm guessing that a full-bleed (like the example at the beginning of the thread) is only possible with Adobe Acrobat?

I do them just fine with WarriorPDF, which is downloadable from this forum. Check the forum list, I think it's just under the "Make Money" forum.

You might have to tweak your margin settings on your PDF
software to remove them on your first page. You can make
it go all the way to the edges when displayed on a monitor,
but printers generally put about 3/8" margin around the edge
of a printed document or picture.

OK, got the full-bleed cover with Word (Word 2008 for Mac).

      Here's the trick:

print > page setup > US Letter, select "borderless" option.

Thanks for the help, you guys are awesome.

This thread is a bit outdated but it deserves an answer. If you are creating an ebook and using microsoft word to make the book, then create all the "inside the book" in Word and create your cover art in something else or a different Word file. When importing into mobipocket or any other application, you will be asked for the cover art separately from the content. A maximum quality 72 dpi 500x350 pixel jpg image will take care of most ebook covers. Your cover can even be a screen capture cropped down in Word, then copied into Paint and saved as jpg.
