Do you read the OP before you comment?

Its something I'm seeing a lot and I don't know if people are doing it for post count or because they are in a rush or because they just don't care but in almost every other thread I read theres more than one person that makes it obvious that they don't even read the OP (opening post if you are a newbie) before posting.

And its not just noobs. Most of the time they are responding just to the post title. Hers an example . In one recent thread the OP posted a link (to Google's blog) and started discussion all about that link. Thats it - the thread was all about that link. About 12 posts down someone then posted the same link pointing out thats where that post was (obviously it was already in the OP big and bold) and made observations that were all in the thread already).

So do you actually read the OP before commenting? I thought everyone did but thats just one example. Nothing earth shattering but a little annoying. To me you can't really add anything worthwhile by just reading the thread title.

Or can you? (haven't seen it yet)

I certainly read the OP before posting a comment. For every person that doesn't read the OP however, there is someone else who only reads the OP and will repeat what has been said in several of the comments above theirs. I wish that everyone would read the original post as well as most or all of the other comments before adding their thoughts.

Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.

They read all the posts, they just don't understand them

Can anyone give me a summary of what Mike said? His post was too damn long, and I got hungry reading about McDo's, Burger King, and KFC, so I had to go to Pizza Hut.

And while you're at it, can you summarize everyone else's comments, it is really hard to read all this stuff, when you are eating Pizza and drinking beer.

      Thanks...

ElMundodelExito that might have been funny if we all didn't know that you copied and pasted that from your actual blog comments.

I wonder what percentage of people would open or read my opening post with this subject.

+1 for the thread. Sometimes it's so annoying when people don't read even the first post before they comment. Reminds me of that post where there was the link to Google and then a dozen posts down someone put the same post to Google. I wish people would pay attention and not duplicate the original post's argument two dozen posts into the thread. That's like such a newbie mistake.

On another note, I'd be curious to see how many people ever read the OP before posting, but fearing this thread may get off track and be hijacked I don't think I will.

But I do agree with "tryinhere" as he makes the strongest argument for not eating at McDonalds.

McDonald's? Lol ... that's giving a message without stating the Obvious.

    Seriously though ...

    Mike,

Yes, I read the titles and the OP before posting in the threads. I also tend to read through most of the thread just in case the thread shifted off track.

Having said this, I believe that titles and OP should somewhat natch up. I see there are tons of titles that have nothing to do with the OP or subject matter. People do it for clicks, but what they don't realize is that people like me come along, click, and start reading, then click right out of the thread. This may or may not be partly why we see there are more viewers than posters in the threads. I'm not stating this as a fact, but I'm darn sure it contributes to it.
