Does Google #1-10 make an appreciable difference in valuing a site?

#1-10 obviously is very desirable, it could be said that the top page will dominate 95% of all web visits to websites but how valued is this to people?

Everyone talks about the almighty .com and to a lesser extent the .net but why is no one actually taking into account where Google ranks (or other search engines) in the grand scheme of things?

I have seen some awesome domain names be absolutely nowhere in the top 1000 searches yet if they are single names they get a far higher value than one that is actually in position #1-10 right now.

Is there any real justice to this?

Single names usually have a ton of value because of their type in traffic. A name like bank.com or insurance.com would naturally fetch a ton of money because they probably recieve alot of type in traffic.

The fact that these can easily be branded is also a factor to consider.

Yes, but why is insurance.com valued far higher when it is languishing in the pits of the proverbial 7th circle when insurance.ws is right there on rank 4 when someone makes a search?

Shouldn't google rankings play some part in your offer to buy a domain/site?

Type in traffic and branding like I said before. How many people will actually type in insurance.ws

Percieved value is also something to consider. When an insurance company does a commercial on TV.. wouldn't they have more credibility if they directed the viewers to insurance.com for more information?

Yeah your right, I have noticed this alot too. I think it doesn't matter what GTLD you have, its the def the keywords with google and your hompage title and meta tags. I've been trying to rank the domain in my sig for 1 week now, I went to a free blog service (instablogs) and tested out some domain names and they ranked alot higher with no backlinks (page 3), no PR, no content, nothing....? and they were .instablogs.com
