Which is Better - .org or .net?

I've heard some say that .org is definately stronger than .net, but when I do traffictravis analysis for top ten in a certain keyword, it's rare that I see a .org beating out a .net.

What do you think?
#net #org

I would use a .org before a .net but I think you would ok either way.Personally, I have had a great deal of success with a .org I am using.

I have seen .org sites rank well in search engines. I can not say the same for .net.

I consider them equally valuable, and have had both rank great and other times tank.

For SEO purposes, the domain extension doesn't matter.

For customer perception marketing purposes, .org tends to indicate a non-profit organization, while .com and .net indicate a more commercial or buying intent.

That is exactly what I would say too.

One possible reason you don't see so many .org domains high in the SERPs for your keywords could well be because marketers are not buying and promoting .org domains so readily. In other words it is quite possible any .org domains have been out marketed and have little chance to rank well.

If .org had any really special SEO power then every marketer would be all over it and you'd see less .net, .info, or even .com and the consensus would become "don't buy .coms because they don't seem to rank well".

I don't buy .org personally because of the non-profit aspect so I wouldn't use it for commercial purposes.

        Cheers,

        Jonathan

.org often means lower priced services and you are a friendly folk. Someone who wants to help people. Sure, we want to help people - but we also want to make money. Unless you are doing a survey system or something that has "charity" written all over it - dont by the .org.

.info is becoming more popular as is .biz. At least people know its more of a commerical venture. As to .net, most of the major media outlets use the .net for the subscribers. So if your site is a subscription oriented product, go with the .net. But the truth is stick with the .com if you ABSOLUTELY can.

I can get the same rank with a .com, .net or .org domain. From the testing I've done on hundreds of domains, there isn't one that's better than the other in terms of ranking.

    However...

The .com will always have a slight edge. That's because when people hear a name of a website, they almost always associate it with a .com domain name. So traffic via word-of-mouth may result in your .net/.org domain losing traffic to the .com equivalent.

Yeah, the .org use to be specifically for not for profit organizations. Most of which never did or do any seo optimization. Many .org's get their juice from legitimate links to their sites from other sites that feel the site offers value, and was built up over time. In internet marketing we try to replicate that appearance of authority through artificial means.

There is no SEO relevance to having a .org or a .net. Psychologically, I think .org's, at one point, had more of a trust value to visitors, but with more and more marketers using them, I think much of that trust is lost, so it doesn't really matter which you use. Same content and effort, they will rank equally.

Darren Rowse from problogger.net is in the # 4 spot for the keyword "blogging".

Wikipedia.org comes in at number 2 and Wordpress.org comes in at number 3, but I imagine it would be hard to outrank these 2 sites.

I think it all comes down to the individual site and the content that you provide. If you have the best whale watching website around, nobody is going to care what the domain ends in, they go to the site for the best damn whale watching information, not because it ends in org or net.

I've done my tests and both tend to rank equally well assuming everything else remains same. I can't dwindle in any single one's favor but I, personally, like .org better. Not for SEO - just a personal preference lol.

I always thought that the .org extension is limited to government, charity or non-government organizations that serve the public at large, rather than any person or company that can be considered a commercial type of entity.
This means that .net extension is more relevant for internet markerters.
In any case I don't think the choice makes any difference to search engines. Their main interest is in the relevancy of content to a search word or phrase. And .net is more popular.

I've found the content and purpose of the site seem to play into the value of .net or .org.

Some vitamin supplement sites and alternative health site topics, for example, can be benefited by having a .ORG.....lends a little less commercialism in the visitors eyes. YMMV of course.

If it's for business, it does matter - .org is for non-profit or opensource projects mostly, .net you can use just like .com. For SEO it doesn't matter...

Org ranks better than Net. I speak from solid, real world results.

As for "suitability"...it doesn't matter. My sales aren't impacted in any way by the Org. Purely cosmetic.

I've had both rank on page 1 very quickly so from experience I wouldn't say one is better than the other. I prefer .net because they are cheaper and I think might be a little more marketable to 'flip' in the future because some people don't want .org for a place to sell but if I really want the name I pay the few extra bucks and get a .org when the .net isn't available

If you provide value the search engines will reward you no matter what the extension is. When your consumer is coming in from the search engines the only thing that matters is the top 10. However if I had to choose I would go with .net, its a personal choice only.

As one has stated earlier...i would be going for .com. If I can't get Dot Com, I would probably think of another name...But if I were forced to choose, I would choose Dot Net...But I don't think either one is any more valuable than the other...

My website is a .net website and I did not face any problem for ranking it for a lot of keywords. So I think there is no difference between a .com or .net or even .org. It matters how you are going to use them.

    Thanks

With time, after several tests, i noticed that there is not much difference between .org or .net the secret is in the quality of your site

The only comment, as Michael Ellis told you, is that being very used .com many people when looking for a name of website automatically insert .com because naturally being very widespread, and so you may lose visitors because it would end up on the site with .com.

If you can, choose a domain with .com

I've seen good and bad sites with all three of those endings. Whether it's .com, .net, or .org, the final result will depend upon the value of the content and service that you provide.

I think the site extension .net & .org both are same. after taking domain, you need to try to increase your website traffic. If you can increase the number of your site visitor, it would be great. no matter which extension do you use.
