To be honest I am getting bored by these "the best..." threads. They are completely useless!

There is no such thing that would be the best for everyone, sorry.

The widgets, plugins, themes, whatever_______ should be used not based on some imaginary 'top list' but according to your blog's needs.

What is your goal with the blog?
    How is the content structured?
What specific effects, layout etc. are you aiming for?
What specific experience do you want to offer to your visitors?
    ...

Those should be the defining questions not some abstract "the best" list.

Your a straight shooter! Thanks for that, I would have to say that I agree with you 100%. Just curious is all, mainly to see if there is a widget out there that perhaps I have not heard of yet..

Istvan made a good point which I basically agree with,... in that there is no such thing as a universal "best" for all and that each individual has his or her own objectives to consider.
Having said that,... whilst I have my own list of "must haves" and "must avoids",.. I will say that having a fundamental array of certain plugins that will enhance the SEO performance and overall utility of a WordPress blog or CMS site is a must.

The thing is that WP out of the box is not optimised and as such needs to be configured. This is where some knowledge comes into play as is the case with all things.

I've actually incorporated my list of must haves into a package I refer to as Optimum WordPress and once set up properly on any blog or CMS they will markedly enhance its perfomance (and no I'm not here to promote OWP even though you can check it out via my signature link.... in fact I will freely provide anyone that asks with a download link for all of the plugins that I use).

        Cheers

And I say reading the OP is also a "must".

The OP was asking about WIDGETS - not plugins in general.
An antispam plugin is not a widget. Period.
Blocking the admin panel - is not a widget...

Do you want me to go through the list what your package is offering?

          For the sake of clarification:

(usually) all the widgets are plugins.
However, not all plugins create widgets.

Which means, if the OP is asking about widgets, don't push your security plugins package.

P.S. The service you offer looks fine since most WP users leave their blog wide open to attacks... but this thread was about widgets. You know, the ones that you drag and drop into the sidebar

            Thanks,
I noted the emphasis on "I would be very interested in knowing what widgets people are using for SEO and other benefits." and concluded that there was an obvious alluding to plugins as it is plugins that provide the "SEO and other benefit"...and not "widgets" per se. If you knew anything about widgets that provide beneficial functions then you'd know that they are ALL generated by a plugin in the first place!

What's wrong with you man???,... got up on the wrong side of bed or something??

I entered this thread as a genuine contributor and not a spammer or pusher of anything. I made that clear and have also provided several people on this thread with the complete download list of all the plugins I use... so how is that being pushy or spammy??

I have indepth knowledge and experience with WordPress which I often frelly share whenever I get the time or opportunity. I absolutely love WordPress and all that it provides so excuse me for taking an interest in this thread!

Yes,.. please go ahead and disect my OWP service.... it is virtually transparent anyway and the emphasis is on service. I also would like to suggest that it is one of the best overall security and functionality installations that is currently offered on the market. If you disagree or have something better to offer then lets hear about it.
Otherwise, why go out of your way to make irrelevant and innaccurate comments about someone that is making a sincere effort to contribute towards the thread of a fellow warrior who is evidently seeking information? To me that simply is NOT representative of the Warrior spirit, and I resent the implication that my objectives were not honorable or relevant to this thread!

For the sake of clarity,...I know very well what a widget is and is not, and sarcastic comments to the contrary are not only not appreciated,.. they are condescending and derogatory and I don't think that is at all anything like the warrior spirit which is meant to be forthcoming from seasoned warriors such as yourself.

            Yours sincerely,

            Russ

All in one SEO hands down. Also seem to use the Form Submitter 7 a lot with CAPTCHA support. Sure beats PHP

Hmmm too bad this ranks in Google for "Best WordPress Widgets" because the thread is useless due to one grouch.

WTF Everyone knows that not all widgets are "the best" for everyone. It is just a way to get people to list their favorite widgets and if someone is looking for inspiration they can go through the list of widgets and maybe see something they like. Unlike the big list on WordPress.org you would also have personal feedback on how people used them, or their effectiveness.

But no - lets just complain instead. Lets not offer anything useful to the discussion but lets whine about how we are sick of these threads and derail it. Who cares if it helps other people, because it doesn't help me!

    Bravo.

Because I am not a hard-on, here are some of my favs:

Random Posts Widget: I like it better than recent posts, it will expose some of your older work to people. Also if you don't update as often as you should, people won't see the same old posts in your sidebar all the time.

    Most Popular Posts:
This ranks your posts based on number of comments. I like it and have noticed I actually got more comments. We had a biz directory and people business owners would persuade customers to comment in order to stay in the site wide sidebar. It spiked traffic on the site and fostered a sense of community. Also got some Google love due to all the fresh commenting.

KB Countdown Widget: Simple let me add a countdown to my sidebar. I used it on a friends site for their babies due date. They loved it.

So was the OP actually asking about plugins (which create widgets), or was he asking about widgets? Because at this point confusion reigns, apparently.

    Holla Guys,

When it comes to a discussion about Widgets, i love to talk about ad manager patches available in wordpress & the new Beta tested versions of WP, which are used by thousands of members for their domains as well as free shared domains provided by WP.

I started using widget section with RSS feeds, yahoo site explorer badge, embedding widget, twitter widget helps one to attract a lots of users on his / her online space.

i tried them & it worked through incredible increase in site traffic & more views & hits on the go....

We all need to take a cold shower every once in a while when we enter the forum. While some want to split atoms about what this post is really about or not about, there are tons and tons of newbies whose only source of IM-university learning is by scanning posts left by you guys - the last thing I want is a forum with heavy police attitude. We have moderators here, let them do their job.

Widgets don't matter for SEO. If you are shooting for the SEO install all-in-one SEO plugin, xml sitemap plugin and generate keyword focused unique content. My brand new blog is picking up search traffic, and I hardly use any widgets (I don't even do much SEO or write keyword focused content, it's just a personal blog)

Interesting content and people coming over commentin and starting interesting discussions in comment threads under your post is the best SEO in the world. That gets you ranked over all the jazzed up SEO and heaps of farmed backlinks any day.

Excuse my ignorance but is there a widget that one can add that you can select the font and add an image like the normal page editor?

I know there's a standard text widget but you can't add an image and I want more functionality.

    Thx.
