Is Facebook Stalking the Warrior Forum?

Geez Louise, Facebook's PPC ads are just downright amazingly targeted.

I don't know if this is pure coincidence, or whether or not Facebook has spiders smart enough to crawl into the innerwebs to collect data and display targeted ads.

So get this...

A few minutes ago I posted a silly response in this thread making fun of Glenn Beck...

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...formation.html

Within minutes, I get a new ad in Facebook asking whether or not I'm a fan of Glenn Beck? This ad has never shown until I just posted his name in that previous thread.

WEIRD!

Check out attached image...

So my question is.... "is Facebook smart enough to track our dialogue on other sites and display relevant ads to that discussion?"

I don't know the answer, but thought it was a eerie coincidence.

That is eerie J-Mo. Outside of some major privacy violations of your Internet usage, I think it's a coincidence. It's probably something in your profile, posts, or prior activity on Facebook that brought that ad up.

That's what I would of thought, but the idea of even mentioning that scums name makes me want to puke.

I'm 99.99% sure I've never uttered such vulgar statements as that mans name.

Yeah Jason facebook is stalking you, they have those micro tiny spiders running through your system right now trying to find out about all your interest and hobbies. You might want to block access to your dirty folders that contain some things you do not want others to know about....

Awhile back, I was writing an article on film schools and there was a particular school that I had to register for the site in order to see available courses and so on. After registering, ALL of the ads on my Yahoo email were for this particular school.

    It really freaked me out.

I've known it since the first time I had to get a grocery store CLUB CARD in order not to pay 60% more than everyone else. Everything we do that has any kind of electronic signature is known somewhere, by someone or 'something.'

I happen to know the Safeway corporate IT manager's brother.

        They don't correlate the data.

There's a gold mine in there, but Safeway doesn't care. 90% of your grocery buying habits are just being ignored. Pretty much all they do is match up coupons to your purchases. They don't even use historical data to predict inventory needs.

Just because they COULD track you doesn't mean they DO.

Wow, I saw that Glenn Beck Post in other post. Let's think of way to use that for our advantage. Speaking of Facebook, I tried for over one year to place an ad with them. Kept getting declined, they just approved one today for me. Very similar to my others, I think they are taking some of the PPC money that Google is not getting anymore from IMers.

They use a controversial beacon system to collect information and send it back to home base.

Facebook's Beacon Ad System Also Tracks Non-Facebook Users - PCWorld

Beacon captures detailed data on what users do on the external partner sites and sends it back to Facebook along with users' IP addresses, Stefan Berteau, senior research engineer at CA's Threat Research Group, said today in an interview....

...The information that Beacon captures includes the addresses of Web pages the user visits, and a string with the action taken in the partner site, Berteau says.

Man, I've been saying it for a while now, but I have got to do some Facebook ads. Seriously.

I have no idea if Facebook can do that level of tracking. But honestly, nothing would surprise me at this point. Although you have to admit, Glenn Beck promos are just about everywhere these days. So, could be a coincidence.

I guess the best way to find out would be to write a post with the Mayan doomsday prophecy, FEMA internment camps, Michael Jackson, the Taliban, and a Kardashian sister all in the same paragraph and see what FB gives you.

      I've noticed this too, Jason.

I never really paid attention to the ads on Facebook. Most of the time, they weren't relevant to me anyway.

But I'm newly engaged to be married and I'd changed my relationship status on FB as well as made status updates regarding my engagement and wedding. Most of the FB friends are family and old college classmates, so my engagement and upcoming wedding are definitely of interest to my FB friends.

My comments centered around buying my wedding dress, choosing wedding music, booking the hotel, etc. All of a sudden, the ads on my FB page are almost all related to weddings, wedding dresses, etc! Geez!

I also noticed some ads relating to my place of employment. One ad asked me "Work for XYZ Co? You may be entitled to tuition benefits!" Well, one of my benefits WAS tuition reimbursement, so it made me laugh.

Of course, since I just lost my job on Friday, those ads are no longer relevant.

The strange one for me was when a friend's wife finally decided to create an account, and she put in her minimum info to create the profile, and lo and behold, Facebook recommended all these people that she knew including some family and friends. Granted, it also recommended some people she didn't know but still... all she provided was the minimum fname, lname, and email address, etc...

All that I could come up with on that one was that it used some geotargeting based on IP address and then matched last name to pull family in the same area. Then it pulled first generation contacts from each family member as well.

It was definately strange though... strange for even a tech guy like me.

Nopes, Just you man, and maybe kern too

Kidding aside, I haven't noticed the ads. I'm semi active on
facebook (updating my wall with offers and participating
on Tiffany Dow's Squidoo challenge) but haven't noticed
targeted ads so far, mostly game ads like farm ville and
    mafia wars.

    @michaelhiles

I agree, Being a tech guy meself, it's something that can be easily implemented
once you've got enough people signed-up. It's just a matter of
interconnecting information based on fields and values like address, names
    and common associates or friends.

However, are there any protest or any kind of action against this
    at the moment?

    That would be interesting..

Sounds like some crazy Java script or Ajax to data base type of data recording?

Makes me question their Privacy policy they put out and retracted a while back. Obviously, they are competing with Google and want the upper hand. (At what Cost)..

Think of the information available to Google if they were to buy Facebook. I wonder if FTC would approve such a thing or apply tariffs like they did to AT&T back in the 80's to separate them into "Baby Bells".

    J-Mo,

I know this thread is a bit old, but something happened to me that can definitely be
    considered stalking, even borderline shenanigans!

So I'm in my Facebook account and I do a search for an old friend I want to add to my friends list.

At the same time I'm chatting (using their instant messenger app) with another friend.

They send me a link to a site to check out and I click it.

It's blog with content and adsense on it.

*** Here's where it gets interesting and possibly confirms the stalking issue ***

As I'm scrolling down the blog I come across a Google Adsense block and here's
what the title of each Ad in the block say:

    Find Jane Doe

    Looking For Jane Doe?

    We Found Jane Doe

    ****END AD BLOCK*****

JANE DOE is the alias I'm using as the name of the person I was searching for on Facebook!!!

Their name showed up in an Google Adsense Ad Block on a completely different site
that has NOTHING to do with Facebook!!!!

    WTF is up with that????

Something is definitely going on between Facebook and Google.

Maybe big G has an "evil" cousin that is a wolk in sheep's clothing.

Who knows, but I found it interesting and it gave me the impression
that they are in bed together somehow.

Just some food for thought people.
