Isn't Internet Marketing Just Another J.OB??

I got asked this question the other day by a long time friend and had a really fun time sharing my thought with him on that question.

So Is Internet Marketing Just another Job?

You do the work, and you get paid.

**My thoughts**

Yes, it is just another career path, but far more satisfying in the end. It is one of the only j.o.b.s that you can "work" on the beach, at the lake, take endless vacations, never "request" time off, pick your associates, pick your products, work random hours of the day.

Anyone else have any thought?

Sure it's a job. But it's not a J.O.B. I'm paying myself and my family directly, not working for someone else. My income potential is not limited by a glass ceiling. I can (and plan to) work inside, outside, while camping, boating, lying around on a hammock...I can work on the beach or on a plane. If I get up in the morning and feel like taking the horses out, I can do that instead. My schedule is mine. Nobody is there to tell me that I must get X amount accomplished between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

    Ahhhh freedom...

I don't see this as a 'real' job. If I wasn't into IM, I would still spend a lot of time sitting behind my computer...feeling useless. This instead is productive and the money you can make in IM overtime is just beyond your wildest imagination. :p No real job can beat that.

I completely agree. Not only do you get to set your own schedule, but you get to be your own boss! I used to hate worrying about what my boss at my job thought about my work.

LOL Yeah. You can easily spend 8-12 hours working on your stuff, from anywhere. and not even notice the time going by. You are not tied to any set schedule, and all the work you do directly benefits you.

It certainly beats sitting in an office, punching a clock, just to make other people richer.

        a. Of course I'm following you, you're the official Warrior Forum babe. All us guys are following you . . . unless our wives are in the room. We don't want any trouble, you know!

        b. Naw, you're just younger and faster than me. It takes me longer to get around so you keep beating me there. :p

Great answer! Seriously, T Harv Eker, multimillionaire and author of Secrets of the Millionaire Mind lists this as one of his wealth priciples when faced with two desirable options:
Poor people choose one or the other. Rich people ask themselves how they can have both.
You're thinking like a millionaire, kiddo! And you're a babe. And you're fast.

I am not as fortunate ad most here to call IM my career (yet). I still grind my 40 hours per week at a job I can't wait to leave so I can come home and work on my IM biz. I feel like it is NOT a job and definitely a way of life (for me at least).

It's work...something too many people fail to realize as they're looking for
      that magic button to press.

What separates it from my definition of a job is this.

I don't have some ass of a boss telling me what to do and what a f*ck up
      I am.

I don't have to battle the traffic in the morning.

I don't have the added car expense. My auto is 6 years old and has about
      40,000 miles on it.

I can get up when I want and work when I want.

I can make as much money as I want if I'm willing to do the work.

If you call that a job...fine.

But it's the damn best job I ever had in my life.

I don't look at it as a job at all. It's more like building your own business with equity that can increase over time. When I write an article noone is paying me to do it but I look at it as another brick in the building I am creating online.

The reason many people fail with internet marketing is they are only used to the concept of a job where they do work and get paid for it. It may take someone a hundred hours of hard work before making a penny in this business and most people don't have that kind of endurance and can't see that every hour is actually building on top of itself.

I think it is a way of life, much like home schooling children. You have so much more opportunity to expand your interests and abilities than if you work for someone else. And you don't have to spend time spinning your wheels when others don't have their work done so that you can do your own.

On top of that, it is like playing--it's fun! I can't wait until May when I plan to go full time with this. Now, I just have to start making a bit more money so I can pay the bills, too.

        Absolutely.

It's only a breeze for the the guys at the top. The majority of people are struggling.

I'd be willing to wager the majority of posters here are waffling and not making a penny. Or at least not enough to boast about. (I include myself in that, but I'm not out to make a killing. A living will do me fine).

    Employee:

Working for someone else, in their interest, for pay that allows them to turn a reasonable profit. Offers security, to a limited degree; Ie: $XX.XX dollars per hour.

If job is lost, experience gained is often only suited for the exact same position elsewhere.

    Business Owner:

Gives people Jobs, has unlimited room for growth. Is dependent on a number of factors they can control and manipulate, however exposed to greater risk than a Job holder. Ie: No guaranteed income.

Experience is directly applicable in any number of fields, should future employment become necessary.

I'm of the belief that if you can build one successful business, you can do it again.

Both have pros and cons. Personally, I prefer having my fate in my own hands; rather than being a number on a payroll somewhere.

Yes IM is a job but it is far from normal in every sense of the word. I was basically given a choice between IM and the standard type of job that teenagers get..I chose IM and I haven't looked back since. With all of my activities in highschool I NEED the flexibility to work on my own schedule and not work if I have to.

IM gives me the freedom to keep my grades up AND make money + it gives me amazing business experience at a very early age.

Childhood dream, indeed. I knew what I wanted to do since I was five: write books. I also knew though, even then, that unless my work got REALLY famous, I'd have to find something else to do as well.

I hear you! I've been writing since I knew how and my dad even told me that I was making stories with stick figures before I could write, lol!

I also dreamed of being a writer but forgot about it as life continued on, marriage, family, career, etc.

Then due to being layed off, thought I'd give IM a try, and just sort of fell into it...it actually sought me out...then that dream I had totally forgotten about popped back into my head!

And I got teary eyed, and thought, Wow, dreams really do come true! I call it destiny!

How many times have you gone to work, and your boss comes up and says "do this."

Can you say "that's stupid and I'm not doing it" back to him?

Nope! You have to do it his way. And when it doesn't work, he'll come up and say "That was stupid. Why did you do it?"

Can you say "you told me to do that, because you're an idiot" when he does that?

No! You have to make excuses for his own retarded idea. And in the end, if he got in enough trouble for it, he might still fire you.

One of the things I like about IM is one of the things that irked me at one time. I had an online bookstore - IM to me. But one friend used to say to me: Are you working now, or are you still doing the books...? One other individual I met - a college lecture - had asked me what I did. I told her. About 4 minutes later she quizzed me more closely: Yes but what do you really do?

It's a job by definition since whatever you do consistently for an income is a job. As of now I don't have a job since I haven't yet made any income for what I've been doing consistently....or kind of consistently.

But sure it's a job. And I think it's harder than one with a boss standing over you. It's easy to just report to work and get money for it. But it's really hard to put in lots of work while both not getting paid AND everyone you know thinks your nuts!!

When you are selecting a regular job, you ask how much it pays. With online marketing, you do not ask how much it pays. You ask what is the earning POTENTIAL.
But there is still LOT of work involved. No one expects a regular job to bring you million dollars a year. Yet lot of people do expect that from their online marketing job, and they expect it to happen the very first year, and on a part-time effort (mostly while having 'real' jobs). Basically, regular jobs have low expectations and low number of misconceptions, while internet marketing has huge expectations and even huger number of misconceptions.

Sure, you get a wage but at the end of the day you are still just working for someone, doing their bidding and lining their pocket.

A J.O.B as most people think of it means that no matter how long and how hard you work you'll never be free.

After 40 years in the same J.O.B you can still get laid off and have no income. You still can't decide what to do with your time. You still can't make random decisions to do random things whenever you feel like it. You can't do all of the things that you really want to do with your life.

By starting down the track of working for yourself and developing more and more income streams you become more and more free. You work for yourself, do your own bidding and line your own pockets.

After 40 years of IM and working for yourself you can have such a varied and stable set of income streams that you can do just about anything you want with your time.

You can work when you want to because you get a kick out of it, not because your survival depends on it. You can lay out your days however you like, and you can do all of the things that you want to do with your life.

The key difference between working for yourself doing an IM job, and doing a J.O.B is freedom vs (wage) slavery.

  • I might say it's more of a profession for those who earn six-figure income, and a J.O.B. to those who are just starting out. :p

    @ Jeff Mitchell

    Hi Jeff,

I'm in a "real" job and will be getting into IM soon.

    Here's why:

No commute (I spend 3 hours a day commuting at a cost of $7,000 per annum - that's about $10,000 per annum gross).

    No offshoring of my job.

No p*ss-taking with "Hey Rich, can you do Saturday's shift? Bob's off ill.", invariably last thing on a Friday, and not ever a question, but a demand.

I get my holidays when I want them, not when they fit in with the company or my colleagues. And here's a bit of controversial stuff: in the UK, folks with kids are getting first refusal on the "nice" holiday dates!

I can adapt my IM strategy to catch new trends, etc. In the "real" world, that equates to retraining, which takes ages and costs a fortune.

IM is not ageist. I could do it until I'm 100, and not be pensioned/binned-off.

      Three cheers for IM.

A J.O.B keeps us Just Over Broke and towing somebody elses line. IM gives you the freedom to be creative, to try new things, to set your own schedule, and to constantly learn. In additon you get to work from any place you can put your laptop.

IM does of course it have it's own challenges but at the end of the day, it is very clear you are calling the shots.

IM isn't really a J.O.B, it's your own buisiness that requires a little discipline.

I totally agree. This is not a J.O.B. because you control your own paycheck, hours, location etc... and the only limits you have here are the ones you set for yourself. I've never heard of J.O.B. like that.

      No it's not a job.

Your income is less predictable (although it can be a whole lot more than you'll earn at a job).

You don't have a boss telling you what to do, you don't have set hours to work unless you set them yourself (that sounds great but for some people used to working a job it's a big reason they don't make much money from their internet marketing business).

You don't have to turn up anywhere specific to do it...anywhere will do if you have a laptop computer and an internet connection (also good but some people like being around the same workmates day after day...some marketers set up an office they go to with employees etc so you can get around this).

      Ultimately it's not a job...it's a business.

You can treat it like a job if you want or you can make it anything you want to make it.

Either way to make real money there will be work involved.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Job? I don't think of it as a J.O.B. Yes you have to do some work, but you can do that work anywhere and anytime. The big thing is that you don't have someone constantly yelling at you...DO THIS!...DO THAT! Oh, wait a minute, I forgot about my coach.

      P.S. Love ya coach.

It's only a JOB if you make it one.

You can make it NOT be a JOB by implementing a continuity component into your online business, set it up once, let it run, get paid forever regardless if you're physically there to 'work' or not.

"Most of the time I do what I have to do the rest of the time I do what I want to do"

IM is about reversing that statement.

      IM is about passive income

IM is about being part of a community of people that 'get' each other.

All depends how a person defines JOB really

Essentially, avoiding all the abbreviated jargon, most people in todays world will say a Job is doing something in exchange for money

So no matter how you slice it, where you do it, when you do it, or how many hours you put on it. If you do anything for money your doing a job, whether its for you, your mom, your dog, you pet lizard.

JOB has become like a swear word in the internet marketing community. A word used only for saying what you did do vs what you now do.

Honestly who gives a monkeys ass whether we define IM a job or not a job.

As long as you enjoy whatever you put your hand to do in this life, I think is what most people want.

    Good question Jeff.

And, as we see throughout the thread, some pretty good answers, of course, all being subjective.

My opinion is it begins (and ends) with the INTENT. Some jobs are satisfying, some provide a social life, some are fun. But if a job is only about earning a living, or making money and you have to report or account to someone, then it could turn ugly fast.

There are so many ways to make money but the self employed way gives you greater opportunity.

    And it is the OPPORTUNITY that makes IM so cool, so fun, so lucrative. ;

It is just hard to find jobs of any kind that gives you anywhere near the opportunity to do what you want, where and how you want to do it, at the TIME you want to do it.

For me, having the TIME is the most important part of it, making money is the easy part.

It is a J O B that leads you to financial freedom , to do the things you want , do whatever you want , and when you reach the big internet guru stage , you can buy whatever you want and not have to look at the price tag.

Depending on how you look at it. From the beginning its more of a tedious work, in this case you are in business for yourself but it becomes more of less work and pleasure when you have mastered the art of internet marketing and profiting from it.

There is work, and then there is a job. A job might require work, but all work isn't a job. IM might be work, but it's not a job. Does Bill Gates and Donald Trump go to work or do they go to their jobs?

I agree, there's no other job that could just be worked on a few hours a week anywhere in the world like I.M. Of course it might take a couple of years to get set up. Once you do though, its so worth it. Killer money, and no boss telling you what to do. I couldn't imagine any other way to live.

When you have to provide for yourself and your family somehow, you'll do pretty much anything. Even if that means having to make somebody else rich. Everybody has to eat after all.
Plus I don't think working a real job is all that bad. In many cases, I've seen employees go on to be very successful. After all, kids go to university and college to get a good education in order to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.
Imagine if all of them decided to become Internet Marketers instead. We'd all be screwed! There has to be a balance!

Being a self-sufficient entrepreneur is the ONLY way to live... been doing it for over two decades now and wouldn't trade it in for anything.

There are wrong ways to go about this though and it's not for everyone, to be sure, but that is a long topic for another discussion.

Now if I can only get the boss to quit firing me...
