Not everybody can spell.

I usually have a bit of a look around for interesting keywords and their search numbers while I'm having a cuppa and a break from working. It's dangerous, because sometimes I find something I like, and I really don't need anything else to do right now!

I've just happened upon a niche that, when spelled incorrectly, has 2400 phrase match searches a month, 26k competing sites without quotes, the first page of Google has only 1 x pagerank 3 site and 2 x pagerank 1 sites, and the com is available.

When you're looking for niches, don't forget that sometimes people can't spell correctly, and they all still search the web.

This is true but I would never use the incorrect spelling when it comes to writing an article. In my opinion, miss spellings work best for PPC but not for a site which is targeting more phrases then the typo.

That's true, however Google is likely to either override the misspelling and show the results it determined you wanted or show the top 2 results for the correct spelling with the misspellings below.

In addition to what butters said, I wouldn't buy a domain with a misspelled word either...unless I was running the site anonymously, because I wouldn't really want my name associated with the misspelling.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

      All very good points.

Totally agree, Dennis, especially since a large chunk of my online work is as a writer.

I have to agree that it is not anywhere near as effective as it used to be. Instead of Google's "did you mean this" they are starting to just give you the results to what they think you wanted for quite a few search terms.

Mis-spellings can still work pretty well in adwords campaigns though.

I have also noticed some keywords that get misspelled a lot. I haven't actually used any of them, but I think if you use it maybe at least once in your content and then build backlinks with misspelling in the anchor text it should work very well, especially because there is not much of competition.
