Social Politeness Or Spamming Stupidity

TomG brought up an interesting subject and I'd like to really dive into it
because I think it's important. I'll try to make this as coherent as possible
after a day at the dentist, the electronics store and the local Subway
trying to somehow get down a 6 inch turkey without wondering how much
bicarb I'm going to have to chug after.

Let's try to simplify this.

John Doe makes a great post at the forum. Really shares some incredible
info.

Sally Simple is very shy, doesn't really know what to say but doesn't want
the post to go unnoticed so she makes a simple comment.

Nice post...thanks for sharing.

She truly doesn't know what to say. She doesn't really have a vast
knowledge of the subject so she can't really add anything to the
conversation other than to thank the poster.

Now, Bobby Blowhard also reads the post and makes a similar 5 word
comment along with a sig file that screams "Click me or I'll nuke your dog".

And he does this for every freakin post on the forum. It doesn't even
matter what the topic is. He's got his pat answer.

Nice post...thanks for sharing.

Over time, Sally does learn stuff and begins to contribute a little.

Bobby never does.

Here's the point.

You can't judge the reply to a post by the reply itself. You have to look
at it within the body of work of the poster. Heck, even I occasionally
post a few word comment to thank a poster. Granted, my posts of brevity
are as rare as a two bit hooker at a convent, but still, not all my posts
are works of art.

The bigger point is, give somebody the benefit of the doubt until they
prove that they're only here to spam the crap out of the place.

Some people are just shy.

Actually, I made it up on the spot, but being a one time National Lampoon
freak (What, me worry?) I wouldn't be surprised if it was brought on by
      something in my subconscious.

Damn you, Traceye, I found myself unable to resist clicking your link!

I agree, Steve, some people on here get all crabby about completely harmless stuff. Oh well. Sucks to be them.

Russ you and Dana did me in, I had to go back and click Traceye's link.

        Traceye Good sig headline.

        Steve,

Thank you for the opportunity to blast my signature out to everybody that reads every post you submit. Your not a spammer but a heck of a good advertiser for my business.

As that one guy N/A'd last week said "click my link or I'll nuke your computer" "Steve is like trying to eat one Krispy Kreame Donught."
        Steve he said that I didn't. :p

The benefit of the doubt can mean a world of difference for anyone just starting out or just being polite, especially on this forum. It doesn't take long for the "Spammer" to reveal his/her true colors.

Thanks posts clog up forums, plus they inflate post counts,
which is probably why we received the thanks button.

    Steven,

You are one of the few people who takes my one paragraph statement and simplifies it with a page of text Yes, the cut and paste guys are the ones I'm targeting, not the genuine newbie. I also posted a clarification where I specifically said that after posting results I was getting replies from people who were looking forward to the results. Yikes! Anyway, thanks for sharing.

I didn't realize you could take such a small issue and turn it into something that needed clarifying. Do people really over analyze this stuff to such an extent that they'll judge people from a short 'thanks for your words' reply?

It never occurred to me to make so much out of it.

Good post Steven, always give someone the benefit of the doubt. You can't always judge a book by its cover (This goes both ways, positively and negatively.)

What I hate is when people chime in and post a completely irrelavent comment. For instance, this morning I saw a post in an article marketing challenge thread that basically said - no thanks, I'm doing something better.

THEN WHY MAKE THE POST IN THE FIRST PLACE??????

ARGH! Anyhow, you can pretty much pick out the Simples from the Blowhards.

Maybe we should have a 'National No Signature Day' when signatures are banned.

It would be interesting to see how that changed the mood of the WF.

Or maybe it would just be deserted for the day

      Cheers,

Maybe a better idea is to have a bracket before we or new guys can place a sig.

There are some forums where you have to post 15 times before you get benefits..

In our case if we really are that particular about spamming by first time users maybe we could implement a policy for sig placements.

Anyway only experienced forumers will have sig on their first post. So maybe then we could get a hint who will be spamming and who would be here to learn...

    Just my .0000000001

THEN WHY MAKE THE POST IN THE FIRST PLACE??????
        That's the key right there.

Those who are honestly saying "thank you" or trying to participate don't make 30 quick "thanks" and post a WSO - nor do they start advertising they are doing well and tell you to check out their signature.

Doesn't take long to sort out the spammers.

Good point made about some people being shy and everything in life should be taken with consideration for the context. Some are too uptight and do themselves and others no good.

The forum is a community and yes spammers will always hover around but I agree with you Steven that it's kinder to give someone the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

The thank you button is a wonderful addition to the forum, but I like leaving comments of appreciation (even short ones). I think it does a poster good to know s/he has offered valuable information that actually helped someone.

P.S. I was going to say ' Nice post...thanks for sharing.', to really exploit my sig, then I remembered I don't yet have anything listed there to exploit...
