Empire State Marketing

The Empire State Building taught me a lot about marketing last week.

I was on holiday in New York City last week and one of the attractions I visited was the Empire State Building. If you have never been, take it from the queues are HUGE! The queues also wind around a lot of the building and lower floor levels. Every room you go to, some one is trying to sell you something.

Every room had some one making "important announcements" and trying to up-sell, down-sell or side-sell you on something! It was relentless. Some of the stuff they were selling to you was crap, and some of it was worth considering. Although some of the sales tactics were high-pressure in some ways you were never obligated to buy.

As a tourist, it was the same on the streets. People always trying to sell you on stuff, from street hustlers to, tour bus operators. It seemed everyone had a sales pitch. A part from being an amazing trip, it was really educational as far as sales technique goes.

It also displayed to me how much of a role "sales" plays in American (or at least New York) culture. It was really amazing.

NYC, a city of Internet marketers in waiting.

The thing is that a lot of them dont know the potential of the internet.

And I'm glad some of them don't. Their sales funnels would be nightmares!

Standing in a line, being funneled around the empire state building being shouted at a lot of people on commission just made me think back to my day job and the IM industry.

      Thankfully the thought was brief.

NYC is an inspiring place. Not an easy place to make it.
