I turned $2.17 into $5000

A year ago I spent $2.17 and about 4 hours that turned into $5000 over the next 6 months. I've milked it for as much as I can without dedicating more time to it, so I thought I'd share.

I work an early morning job (for the insurance) and listen to talk radio on my way in. I kept hearing this short radio spot advertising a website. I'm sure you know the type. They kept saying the name of the website over and over and over again, hoping the listener would remember it once they were close to a computer.

Luckily, I did. I went to the site and realized very quickly it was just a simple CPA offer. Email submit for a free something or other, but only if you then completed 7 additional offers.

At this point in my internet marketing career, not only was I working early morning at a warehouse, but I was also working day time customer service for an online retailer. I spent everyday on the phone with people who had bare minimum computer experience.

9 times out of 10 when I told a customer to go to a specific website address they would type the URL I gave them into Google and search for it.

I realized that most people hearing the ad would type the URL into Google and search for it. Come to find out, the URL as a keyword phrase, had no competition. There were no trademarked terms and nobody was optimizing for that phrase.

I registered the .net extension of the site ($2.17), forwarded the URL to my own CPA link for a similar offer, put up a Squidoo lens with an honest review of the site and what to expect and directed people to my own link. I then did about 15 minutes of social bookmarking and let it go.

I finished this late one night, probably at 11:30pm. Before I left for my early job (4:30am) my Digg of my lens was #1 in Google for that keyword phrase.

I did this with 3 or 4 other offers, kind of as a side note experiment, and ended up with $5k by the end of July. Not bad for a minimal amount of work.

Guess what, there are a ton of advertisements on radio and TV driving traffic to a website. Take a few minutes and check on the URL as a keyword. How hard would it be to get ranked for that URL? Not Hard! I'm glad somebody was paying for the advertising, because it paid off for me.

    Hey,

Thanks for the post. I never pay attention to ads on radio. From now I will pay attention and congrats on the $5000.

Isn't this rather black hat or taking advantage of a radio shows naivety?

Either way, it is a brilliant approach lol

How on earth is this blackhat?

If a company is leaving money on the table then why not take it? heck he never pretended to be the company nor was he contacted by the company i question to take his site down (i doubt)!

If it was me then i would have also ran some radio campaigns too for a different domain name as it was obviously making them money too.

Google used to buy unused radio advertising space then resell it cheap. That's why I can afford to give away this little nugget. The radio ads didn't work out for Google, but you know what did? Google TV. They buy surplus TV advertising space and sell it to savvy marketers like you, Mark.

Last night, watching the Olympics replay, I saw 3 CPA TV ads in a row.

When you register the .net should you use dashes to separate long tail KWs? or let the words run together?

Let say the address being advertised was www dot easypcspeed dot com; I'd register easypcspeed dot net. If that was taken, I'd try .org or .info. If those were taken, I'd start trying with hyphens.

Crazy thing about squidoo (black hat tip) you can anchor the keyword www dot actualsitename dot com with whatever url you want. I always tried to match as close as I could with the original, though.

Brilliant. That's using the gift between your ears that God gave you. Nice going. Now you should write it up as a special report and sell it as a WSO. Maybe too late for that as my guess is this thread will get a lot of attention.

Thanks. I thought about a WSO, but I've got a lot more and better where that came from. Plenty of time for WSO's later.

Great post. I also found this response from Colton interesting so I went to Google Adwords: Keyword Tool and did an exact search for walmart.com - 2,240,000 monthly searches and target.com - 1,500,000 monthly searches. They typed the url into google instead of using the address bar.

I admit I do that sometimes. I think it's could be the status bar and the search bar by google are just so close to each other i click the wrong one.

second reason is i'm afraid to go to a bad phishing site or have a wrong url

This is the exact type of stuff that will help you make it long term in this business.

Very clever, but I bet if you would have asked other people about doing this rather than just TAKING ACTION and doing it, they would have told you that it wouldn't work.

I'm not sure if the advertisers were running local spots or national. It would make sense to target areas of the country where the demographic favored the offer.

    Great stuff!
I think the key to this type of idea is that someone else is doing/paying for the hard work of getting the product into the public's eye.
I made a steady bit of pocket money when a BBC cookery programme featured a desirable high-end fridge freezer in the background.
I directed PPC straight to an affiliate link (merchant no longer allows this) and every time the programme aired - beer money!!

Good question. For this little project I used Hydra and PrimaryAds.

I've found that if you know even a little bit about CPA, PPC and SEO you can pretty much get accepted to any network. If you don't get approved right away, just call the affiliate manager and chat with them on the phone.

On my applications for new networks, I always put just one URL and explain that I am familiar with SEO techniques, PPC campaigns and list building/email marketing across a wide variety of niches. I find that this will at least give them reason to call me and chat.

At that point, it's a matter of being (sounding) competent in CPA marketing.

    Hope this helps.
