What is Google doing on keyword searches?

I have noticed the following when doing keyword research...

take the word "stainless steel"

SEO Book Keyowrd Tool states 1919 searches/day

Google w no quotes returns 59.2 M

HOWEVER when viewing 100 results/pg - scroll down hit highest page and you will see there are only 608 results returned [What does this mean?]

similar results are returned with quotes - "stainless steel"

And again when search = intitle:"stainless steel" and inrul:"stainless steel"

Is Google messing with us or what does this mean?

Last question -- does searching for intitle and inurl help determine if the phrase being searched could be an easy phrase to target?

I look forward to hearing from some keyword pros.

Thanks

  • Why would Google bother to return 1,000's of pages when they are not relevant because they are not ranking? Google returns the most relevant.

A Keyword tool is only as good as the data set it pulls from.

I'm sorry but maybe I did not explain myself well enough.

First thing you need to do is set up google to return 100 results and NOT 10.

Next key in stainless steel -- you will see that Google returns 59.2M

Next scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the last page shown [page 7] -- when you do you will see that there are only 608 results total being shown NOT the 59.2 Miliion.

This is a fact -- WHY is Goggle doing this?

The rest of the results are in what Google calls their "supplementary index".
Which doesn't get shown. Because the results are less relevant than the other pages.

And apparently the supplementary index is where most of the 24,527 website pages with identical copies of the same worn out PLR article about some aspect of weight loss have been buried.

THERE'S your real life duplicate content penalty :-)

        cheers,
        Eric G.

Those are the sites that Google considers the most relevent.

It is a revelation for those that think competition is huge, but do what you just mentioned and find out there are not near as many relevent sites.

The next step would be go back to the first page and see how many backlinks the top ten sites have if you want to break into the market and get on the first page. Are they top authority sites, government sites, etc.

They do it, because they aren't going to show you all 59 million results as stated.
