Crazy Story about Herbalife! Can it be done with Internet Marketing?

A co-worker of mine is an Herbalife distributor. Between her and her mom they make about $1000/month on royalties. So they do everything offline ofcourse. Anyways, to make long story short. My co-worker goes to like every training seminar that Herbalife does here in my local area. She told me some crazy stories.

Apparently there is a family here in my area that make a ton of money from Herbalife. The Mom makes $50,000/month, her 21 yr. old daughter makes about $20,000/month, and her 17 yr. old makes $5000/month.

There is also this other lady that started selling from her beat up car and within 3 years she has reached the $20,000/month mark. She also told me of some guy in Dallas I believe, who is blind but yet manages to make $5,000/ month.

These are crazy numbers, i know. But it just got me thinking that if these people can make this much money with Herbalife then I should be able to make at least some money with IM.

Does anybody market Herbalife online? Is it even possible? I don't plan on doing Herbalife but I'm just curious.

Hey man... I don't do herbalife, but my bro is part of Amway, he is making in excess of about 10 k per month, but it is a tough way to make a buck..

People are always suspicious of the "Pyrimad Scheme" even though i think those dark days are gone from these companies...( I think anyway)

And my brother tells me that the head guy in his group makes about 90 k per week!!!!

So i think it is true, and i think there would be some guys online making huge money as well. I think you need to have the drive and the mindset to succeed and you can do anything...

Yeah what my co-worker tells me is that her and her mom have to constantly be recruiting people so that the income will keep on coming. I think in a way it is harder than internet marketing because you deal with people face to face. BUt yeah, it's a pyramid type of thing. Not my thing though.

Good heavens! I looked at H'life in 1986. Shudder. The number's game.

No disrespect to anyone you know, but what p*ssed me of was that they refused to accept my challenge to them that they didn't give a s*it about anyone's weight or well-being, as long as they got their comms.

In other words if Herbalife paid them the same as a "real" job would it get their attention in the same way. My point was proved a couple of years later when the same people were promoting "Cabouchon" costume jewellery, some perfume thing, "Non-Scents" odour removal products, Amway etc. I got the BS I expected when I suggested they didn't seem too bothered about people's weight or well-being any more.

Its' never about the product, always about downline and potential income. To those who do well (usually at the top/start of the pyramid) - good luck to them. Anyone else - beware.

With respect to MLM and the Internet, they're already there, with structures in place - oh yes, they've tapped into the online World too

      MLM or IM?

...Worlds apart. I know which I prefer

Be critical when looking at the figures quoted by any of these MLM companies.

Several years ago I had a client who earned a good living from one of them. She was the leader of a good team, selling a good product.

The key is that it is the people who get/got in first who earn the big money. They build up a big team and earn from each team member.

Those coming late to the party earn less. There are fewer customers to go round and fewer opportunities to build a team.

Another friend phoned me (also several years ago) to tell me she had found this "exciting opportunity blah blah blah". I carefully warned her that sales people for this particular company were ten a penny.

She wasn't happy with me - she quit after a few months as she was earning next to nothing.

They don't make that kind of money because the products are so great, they make it because their marketing and recruiting strategies. It's an MLM and they make money from the sales of the people they recruited and the people those people recruited. They have fairly regular high powered seminars where they get everyone all fired up with a bunch of hype about how much money they are making, which makes recruiting easier. There are online MLM's ,but I don't know anything about them.

People make wild exaggerations about the amount they earn. Take anything without proof and slam it in the can. (The golden garbage can rule.)

I used to fall trees for a living. It turned out when I checked with the contractor I was working for that I had by far the highest count on the crew.

But before I found that out I was always surprised by the counts the other fallers mentioned in the bar. I had seen enough to indicate they weren't true. I never mentioned mine, wasn't trying to impress anyone, but it turns out that is rare. sigh

Is there another planet around? This one is a bit goofy.

I swore off Network Marketing about 13 years ago after losing a bunch of money in a vitamin/water filter company.

I recently read "Multiple Streams Of Income" by Robert Allen again. One of the multiple streams that he recommends is Network Marketing.

I started keeping my eyes and ears open for a NM company that I liked. It took about 5 years but I finally found one. It's cell phone service. Everybody uses cell phones: men, women, kids, young and old. Nobody ever cancels their cell phone service either. This creates a nice monthly residual income.

There are no products to inventory, you can't have a garage full of cell phone service.

As I recall Herbalife has pretty strong rules about how you can
    market online.

It's a viable company for an MLM. It's unlikely to fail and some
people do seem to like the products. Still, building any MLM
    online is hard, hard work.

It's hard work offline too, but when you've got a local crew you
have a lot more leverage to keep them working than you would
with and online group scattered worldwide.

Consider that opportunity seekers, just like IMers, are always
looking for the hot new, easy money and you'll understand
why it's challenging to keep a MLM downline recruited online
focused on selling the MLM products.

I know a handful of people who make five figures per month in MLM. Every one of them is a friggin' sales machine. Every one of them works their ass off. Every one of them does it offline, belly to belly, and follows up relentlessly.

    It ain't for everybody.

Before I got into internet marketing I got into a company that ran the pyramid system. I spent a year hitting the pavement trying to sell to friends, family, and whoever would listen to my pitch. I finally made my first sale and the commission I made was $25. I immediately quit. Pyramid systems are set up where other people shave off a piece of the money you make, so if you're at the bottom, you don't make as much.

Internet Marketing is a much easier route to take, unless if you have a big family that you can recruit into the system...

I looked into and considered Herbalife many years ago, perhaps ten to fifteen years ago or more, I can't remember. I considered that it was not for me at that point in time.

Clearly, if it's still operating as a business and can generate some of the income that has been posted, then it would be worth while checking it out - if that's your area of marketing.

I was an Amway distributor, which later became Quixtar.I also joined Herbalife.
On Paper Network marketing business model look perfect. The problem is to hold the people together. The people who join the network are ordinary folks, who join in the hope to earn millions in a very short period of time. They are bombarded with all kinds of advertising techniques, one of them is the stories like my freind has.these few heavy jitters do are earning that amount.but have you seen the thousands others who quit and never made it.
So the problem is to convert ordinary folks into business people, which they are not.
Any business takes time and effort to get it off the ground, which these guy don't understand,as they have Job like mentality, you work now and you get a paycheck next week.
They pose it as a part time business, which is not.Secondly as in a product after it is sold, company has to pay many people down the pyramid,so it is over prized.
So guys beaware,MLM could suck you up.Most of MLM company philosophy is after God is just your MLM business and rest your family, friends, career comes after is a very dangerous idea. You can be divorsed, loose friendship and will remain behind in your career.

I did Herbalife for 2 years, and I see both options mentioned above.

        1. Be lazy and focus on getting multiple people to follow the "get rich quick idea" and sign them up as distributors, getting you paid a % of their sales

        or

        2. Actually work your butt off, operate it as your own business with 50% margin (if you pay the extra money to skip some levels)

I chose #2, My sponsor kept pushing for the first one (as she would get paid too). Even if I moved alot of product, my sponsor kept telling me if I signed up distributors, they could do the work and I could just focus on mentoring them, etc etc.

It was not an easy biz, especially in a small town, and plenty of online competition. IMHO

Offline MLM programs are quite hard to get working. Most people just get into the whole recruiting and others into the selling. When you only recruit people who in turn recruit...no one makes money.

There ARE mlm programs that do work though. But I think herbalife is a bit saturated by now - or much more difficult to pitch rather.

quoted from executiv, MlM's do work. Main problem is managing so many god damn people. I almost got into Quixtar, but an overwelming surge of negativities scared me away. Besides.... nobody cares about selling vitamins and 5 dollar water bottles.

Earlier this year I joined another MLM. Anyone heard of Clear? The company that is partnering with Sprint for 4g internet. That product sold like water. Practically any technology does. My first month I signed up 14 people at $185 profit...totaling to $2590 in my pocket.

But I started getting tired of people's bs and slowly MLMs were screwing up my relationships with friends and still today I have a lot of people ignoring me.

So I stopped doing MLM and I jumped into network marketing ;-)

My 2 Cents. If anyone is to do MlM, do Clear because that's going to be the easiest one to do. Second you better have a rough skin because you're going to get a LOT of **** from people to deal with.

I wouldnt mind promoting MLM if they all didnt require you to also sell a certain limit each month. IM tactics could easily be employed in MLM if all you are talking about is building landing pages to get people to sign up under you via a webpage. Anyone know of any MLM networks out there who allow you to promote and earn that way and don't force you to personally sell crap?

There are definitely some genuine MLM companies around where people can make a very good income whether they arrive early or late to the company's development. I was part of a good MLM company a few years back but was unable to continue due to personal difficulties. However my sponsors were incredibly kind and supportive to me despite the fact that I ended up being of no benefit to their business at all.

Some so called MLM is are a complete sham, but some are genuine.

I have been approached MANY times by some of these pyramid companies, Amway, Carico, Mary Kay, L'Bel among others. I would buy the products but never was motivated enough to join the pyramid. It just never convinced me.

I totally agree. Their main concern is continuing to grow their downline in order to have a bigger paycheck. Nonetheless, those at top are usually the ones bringing in the cash.

According to this Herbalife report (it is from their own site) almost 90% of the active "leaders" make less than $500 a YEAR.

    See with your own eyes:

And the 50% gone inactive must be the ones churned out by the system...

MLM is a rough way to make a living. You need a constant flow of prospects to join and replace the ones who joined but dropped out a few weeks later when they realized no one was going to hand them a million dollars.

I know you are thinking that by using the internet and doing the landing page/opt-in/SEO-SERP routine you can use the entire world as your pipeline and find hundreds of willing propsects a day...

    BUT...

Any legitimate MLM company will never allow you to do this. They have to maintain VERY strict control over their marketing message to keep the FTC people happy, and usually buried in their Rules and Regulations (that you SAID you read when you checked that little box) there is a paragraph or two that bans the use of the internet for just about any purpose when it comes to marketing their product line.

And who wants to go to all that work only to have your business shut down and your customers taken away because you broke a rule buried in the fine print?

Instead, find a niche you like and have some real life experience in, and start building a mailing list by putting out some quality free content. If you can build a list of 1,000 subscribers who will spend $100 a year on anything you have to offer, you're making 6 figures a year and doing a whole lot less work then you would ever do in Herballife or any other MLM/Network marketing company.

The bad thing about becoming an OFFLINE MLM distributer is the type of person you become. Instead of every person you meet being an interesting potential new friend or acquantance, the person is a prospect.

Your whole mentality changes. You are constanly in recruit mode.
When talking to people, you are thinking--how do I direct the conversation to my sales pitch. Friends and family learn to avoid you.

This used to be said about insurance salespeople.

If you want to sell your soul to become a walking, talking advertisement for some company, for which you will have to work very hard for small rewards, go for it.

It's not my cup of tea.

Oh--the claims for success are usually inflated or applicable to a very small amount of people. Joining an MLM company that has been around a long time, like HerbaLife, means you are getting in at the bottom, where the least amount of income is made. If anyone is still keen on doing offline MLM, at least join something fairly new that is sure to take off.

The original poster has a good idea to consider online MLM recruiting, but as others said, it depends on the company as to if it is allowed.
