Anyone ever try the old bait and switch technique online?

I have a product review site that is no longer offering a free trial or affiliate links, but my site itself gets a ton of traffic about the product everyday. I tried adsense, but only made a few dollars from it the past month. I'm thinking about pushing a different product towards visitors, but have never done this before. Anyone with experience or suggestions on how to optimize something like this? Ever had this before?

I get clicks on a site that has nothing to do with the product in a banner.

It is an EXCELLENT way to get some commissions IMO.

I think the key is to offer things that are somewhat generic.

I have a long banner (goes up and down the page not side to side) and it displays directly on the right of the blog post content.

The product I'm selling there has absolutely nothing to do with the actual theme/content of the blog - but it is an interesting thing and something that needs exposure.

I am connected to an affiliate program that shows me exactly where the clicks are coming from, so I've been able to verify the placement of that ad is bringing traffic.

The banner ad has a picture on it which I think is important, and is big enough - small text never seems to work.

I did not put this ad there for bait and switch purpose - but this type of system just works in general.

Build a list with a free report related to the topic. Stick in a one-time offer page after they subscribe to make some front-end sales. Then you'll have a list to hit with upsells. Tried-and-true. Can work great if you're getting a good bit of traffic every day.

Have you tried searching for that product's name along with the term "affiliate" or "affiliate program". Some companies don't link their affiliate page from their sales pages.

It's hard to believe that a company that offers an online free trial doesn't have an affiliate program.
