Today I'm happy and it's peeing it down outside

Here in the UK, we've well and truly said goodbye to the summer that never was. The days are quite obviously getting shorter (still 24hrs, just less daylight to pre-empt all you facetious ones!)

When I went in to my 11 year old daughter's bedroom to wake up here for school, she rolled over and complained that it's still dark. She moaned because she had to turn the light on in the kitchen when getting the breakfast ready and that started a bit of a serial (no pun intended) moan about, well, just about everything. I had a little word.

Yes, it's dark when I get out of bed in the morning and it's raining today. The Scots have a great word for days like today, it's dreek (should be spelled driech) it's almost onomatopoeic.

It would be so easy to get on board with the, "Oh, what a miserable day it is today!" crowd.

The weather may be crap and the newspapers and TV may be full of doom and gloom, but the day is not miserable. I choose not to be miserable. I choose to be happy.

What's your choice?

      I chose not to choose life.

      I love the rain... especially when you hear it pounding on the ground outside an open window.

      You know those days where you're stuck out in it, and you're so wet you just don't care anymore and it reminds you of being a kid.

      Dark mornings and dark early evenings remind me of Christmas - there's something magical about being up at twilight. I think it has to do with memories of being woken up at 4am by my parents when we had a long journey from London to Bradford ahead of us to visit family.

      Or the feeling of getting out of a car to stretch your legs at a motorway service station, which always reminds me of being a 6 year old passenger in my dad's lorry...

      Those were magical times... as are these.

      Those who whinge and moan don't know half of what they're missing out on.

    I chose not to be upset when my 2 year old grand daughter Jessica (who had crawled into bed with me during the night) kicked me in the back at 6.30am and said Nana the sky came back, I want to get up

    I chose not to shout at Adam (grandson) because he sulked when he discovered I ran out of coco pops and he had to settle for rice crispies

    I even chose not to be upset because I had to mop my kitchen floor this morning because the washer leaked (all before 9am)

    In fact, I can't wait to see what fun the rest of the day brings me lol

        I live in rainchester (aka manchester).. if the weather got me down id probably be on suicide watch

          I Live in Los Angeles, here in the Land-Of-No-Water.

          We only have a few days of rain here every year. ...I SO miss the rain!

          I think sunshine is a little overrated. I love the freshness that the rain brings to the air. I love hearing the rain. I love walking in the rain. I love how the rain just "cleans everything off"!

          So, why am I living in the desert?

          I guess, based on the thoughts in this thread, I CHOSE to.....

            I get so tired of bright, sunny days! Love a good rainstorm.

            This is the time of year when I want to trade the 80 degree days for autumn in the area where I grew up - with the chilly winds and smell of leaves on the ground. Then I remember raking all those leaves and how long the cold winter lasts and I get over it.

    Hi Pete,

    Great thread.

    It's funny, I know we didn't really get a summer or anything over here, but somehow it's not so bad because I work for myself and can do what I like with my time.

    Kevin Riley's right, life really is fantastic.

    Now a few years ago, couple weather like this with having to give 9 hours a day to a faceless corporation in order to make them millions in return for a pittance...then I would have given a very different reply to this thread lol.

    And there likely would have been swearwords...

            Summer weather - changing into fall weather???? I thought you Brits only had a single season - cold and damp!!!

            My daughter and her husband actually lived for a few years (until recently) in the Manchester area, and I recall her saying that it never really got above 15-20C or 70F.

            At any rate, I have packaged up some superb Michigan weather and am currently sending it your way!!!

            A great PMA (positive mental attitude) helps to overcome nearly any obstacle!

    Hi pete,

    Like you I chose to walk out for a while, the .weather is good outside. I chose to walk for a while coz I feel like I'll have .prostate problems sitting the whole day infront of my pc. I was thinking I was behaving more like a "bot" churning all the information I could get my hand to. Then I realized I should also lay low and check the weather outside. Funny it's way past midnight here in manila
