Good camera for making a video based info product with

I am getting ready to shoot a information product video that will be sold online. The video is about cooking and we pretty much have everything ready to go except the camera.

Anyone who has released any video products can you give me camera recommendations?

I know there are many expensive quality HD cameras out there but we are hoping to keep this semi affordable for right now.

Are the flip HD camera too low quality?

Any thoughts would be great.

I use the Kodak zi8 and it's amazing (kudos to Kevin Riley for the tip).

It shoots in 2 or 3 types of HD and is almost cinematic.

For best results you'll need an external mic - but the great thing about the camera is that it allows you to use an external mic.

Take a look at this thread. http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...o-storage.html
In the thread it says the video was done with a flip. Video looks really good.
Not that the Kodak zi8 would not be good also. I just haven't seen any video
made with one yet. I use a Canon Vixia HF20 myself.

Flip is good if you are going to be right on the camera (the volume gets really muffled if you are more than a few feet away). If it wasn't for the sound, the Flip would be a great general purpose HD camera at an unbelievable price. (also make sure you have some sort of stand or place to rest it on a hard surface...the flip has a tendency to be pretty shakey in terms of picture when someone is holding it)

I second the Kodak zi8. It shoots great video. Coupled with an external mic (or one like in this thread), you'd never know it was shot with a sub $200 camera.

Thank you for your input guys. I will check out the camera you mentioned.

I also decided to post in another thread an offer to any experienced video producers.

This cooking shoot will take place on a Caribbean island and will only take between 1-2 days. We can offer 7 days of accommodations to anyone who can come with the equipment and help out.

Check out the other thread for more info at

Much of it will come down to lighting, and yes, definitely use an external mic to make sure you capture good audio.

Here is a recent video I did using a Panasonic PV-GS120, not HD, but 3CCD and good quality lens. Believe this camera is now discontinued, but you can get second hand on eBay or something similar will be under $500.

I didn't render this video at anywhere near its highest quality because I wanted it small to upload to video sites...

I use a JVC HD cam which you can get at any best buy and convert everything with MPEG stream clip. The camera has a remote control and a 30 GB hard drive storage.
