Ping Back Question

INTERNET MARKETING

I'd be grateful to find out about how ping backs work and how I set them up on my Wordpress blogs.

There has been a lot of mention of ping backs on another thread that I've been reading and I'm not really clear about how they work.

I have no idea what they are or why they work...I just got told when I first started blogging that it was something I had to do and I have not thought about it since then.

Apparently, too many and they look like spam to someone somewhere (God, perhaps?) who may penalise you somehow (hell, perhaps?), so I was advised to install 'maxblogpress ping optimizer' on my WP blog to limit the pings and to add more urls to ping. The WP blog is set to ping even if you make a slight edit to posts which annoys the urls you are pinging. The MBP plug in I mentioned only pings a new post.

If it is of any help to you, here are the urls that get pinged every time I publish a new post on my blogs:
