Cannabis and Marijuana Blog

Hi guys and gals

We have ended up with a website that is directly related to marijuana and cannabis that is on the front page of G for several high traffic keyword terms, totalling near on 1,000,000 estimated searches a month.

Looking at the analytics info, we can see the traffic growing week on week and it is getting pretty exciting...

Except that the only money we have made from it is a few dollars in adnonsense.

Seeing that this particular weed is illegal in several parts of the world, we are now wondering how to take advantage of this traffic in a more efficient manner. The only thing we could think of is smoking cessation products, and the CPA networks we are members of have stopped doing them (note to self: not checked cj yet).

Would CPA lead with their surveys be of use? We have an account with them, but I have reluctant to try it thus far, as the surveys are split by country. Does anyone know if it will show another survey and result in payment if a visitor from differing location visits and completes?

Has anyone got any related verticals that might be of interest to the pot smokers out there? There is a CB product for cannabis addiction, but it has yet to convert after over 100 hops.

Any advice would be appreciated - I think I am zoomed in a bit too far to see the outside of the box at the moment!

There are some CPA ads out there for e-cigarettes. Those might convert.

Other than that, maybe some CPA links to games and other fun stuff. That's really the only thing I can think of.

Is there a way to sell potato chips over the internet?

(PS I'm waiting for someone to come in here and reprimand you for having a site about weed)

Thanks Murph. Lol @ potato chips! :-D

As you suggested, I just found a company on cj who do electronic cigarettes, so that may well be the way forward. It certainly is worth a trial.

Yeah, I can understand why some may get a little tetchy over the weed issue. The site is actually focused on treating cannabis addiction, along with some of my own experiences from my youth (did a 9 month stint in rehab in my teens - many moons ago).

Note to admin types: if this thread does contravene any board rules, it was not intentional - feel free to delete...

I had different suggestions until you clarified that the site is focused on kicking the habit...lol. Here are some ideas you could consider or at least give you new directions to look in:

Legal Buds.com - Affiliate Program - #1 herbal associate program

I actually just made a quick squidoo lens on saturday writing about my experiences with weed (from many, many years ago, glad it didn't effect my long term memory!) and have a link to the CB product you mention. I actually bought the product and found that it was fairly decent. However, the reason it may not be converting is because the sales copy sucks IMHO.

You could consider contacting the vendor and see if there is anyway you can write your own sales page and link directly to the check-out page. Alternatively, you could draw on your own experience in this niche and make your own product.

CPA products seem to focus more on cigarette smoking as opposed to weed smoking, so it may be difficult to find a decent product to promote. However, i'm sure there is one out there. You could also visit a few cannabis related forums and take note of how they monetize their site!

Have you tried looking for companies that sell grow equipment to see if they have an affiliate program?

How about doing some research on states with medical marijuana, finding out where the dispensaries are, write some content specific to those states and regions, and sell advertising to the dispensaries?

I assume High Times magazine is still publishing (it's been a few years...). Pick up a copy at the newstand and start checking out the advertisers.

Sell glass pipes. I have a client that sells them on Craiglist and makes a mint. Hardest part is finding a supplier.

I'm thinking that since the rehab clinics are a big time business, perhaps you can check to see if they have a referral/affiliate program. You may also check with lawyers and other professionals, such as doctors, psychologist and other professionals as well.

I'm guessing here but a formal letter to the rehab centers and others would be the initial approach, followed up with a personal phone call. Even if they don't have an affiliate program, they may well consider setting up an exclusive with you, just as a test.

    Questions:

    1. Are the keywords related to curing a cannabis addition, as opposed to just general information on weed?

    2. Assuming that some are, can you estimate how much of your traffic comes from people looking for help?

    3. Can you offer them something free in order to build a lead list? "21 Tips To Help Kick Your Addiction" or whatever. Then market to your list directly.

Well it seems this blog is directed at the addiction part. So selling pipes, bongs, vaporizers etc would not make sense.

So let's see how would I monetize a site like that...... well for starters you could turn some of the space into space for rent and monetize that way. I advise not getting involved in legalbuds they are a scam and definitely not something people should be trying to alternate with.

You already have adsense but maybe I would do things a bit differently drop adsense go with a ppv company rent space on the site write a handbook and sell it maybe focus on some other companies like the e cigarettes maybe a quit smoking program etc.

Interesting project, here. Maybe a good approach would be to
    test different marketing possibilities.

    1. Create some reports with scientific info on several subjects and
    build a marketing list.

    A. Research on physiological effects of long/short term smoking.
    B. Research on different approaches to smoking cessation.

    2. Test each one separately to determine which one has the stronger
appeal to your readers. Then communicate with them and build a
    good relationship.

    3. Try to find any products related to cessation whether info or even
    pharma products (reputable ones).

    4. If you find some, do detailed and good reviews for them and offer
    them on your site.

    5. Create an authority site on this subject. Create categories related
    to this subject.

    A. Maybe create a directory of medical/psychological specialists who
offer their services to help people in this area. You'll certainly get more
organic traffic with an established directory of this kind.

    6. Since these people smoke, perhaps you can create an entire area
devoted to the subject of passing drug tests. Find legitimate research
material on the subject of drug testing.

    7. Offer any reputable and effective products that help people pass
drug tests - if you want to go that route.

    8. Create another directory, if possible, of attorneys and other legal
specialists who help people with marijuana related legal issues. More
    organic search traffic.

    9. Sell books from Amazon relevant to your site's purpose including
    books related to addiction, etc.

    10. Sell DVD's from Amazon, and any other reputable source, related
to this niche including addiction related, psychological related products
that are relevant to your market.

    11. Maybe create a forum if you want to get involved with that. Possible
time drain, I don't know. But will help with traffic if it develops into
    something good.

    12. Contact health, legal, psychological professionals and interview them
and create an audio info product and sell that. Contact others and see
if they would be interested in being a guest author on your blog.

    13. Create a category on legislative issues related to your niche. Keep
people informed, you'll draw more traffic.

    14. Offer hypnosis related products for addiction, etc.

    15. Do research on various ways people can help themselves in this
area by doing things that support a healthier body and mind. This could
potentially open up an entirely new area for you, if you do it properly.

I'm referring to healthy things like meditation, or yoga, or nutritional
    approaches, etc.

If you do this right, I mean not coming across as hard marketing pitches,
you could include just a ton of other info and physical products. This
would also open-up a huge related area in terms of additional content
for your blog, and it would attract more traffic I would think.

    16. Do a test run with a teleseminar with a professional or two, and see
    how well it's received.

    17. Put different polls on different pages to try to determine what
people are interested in, or what specific problems they're having that
is related to your blog's purpose. The intent is to try to solve their
problem with a good product you can offer them. But don't mention
anything about marketing to them in your polls, obviously.

I doubt most imbibers want to
quit - kind of like handing out AA
    pamphlets to everyone who goes
to a bar (although How to Beat
That DUI flyers on their cars
    would probably make you bank).

Instead I'd focus on what people
like to do under the influence.

Not that I'd know, but I've heard
eating, sex, funny movies, music -
both listened to and played - and
Frank Kern surfing videos - are
all popular with the 4:20 crowd.

    Then there's pizza delivery, recipes,
    home gardening, etc.

I'd also check Adsense TOS - can
you put Adsense on a site dealing
    with an illegal subject matter?

Not an expert but living in a very weed friendly city of OREGON... i can say, anything in and around bob the dread locked rascalian would be popular. I dont want to confuse medicinal users as hippies but visit a head shop. aside from the obvious tobacco pipes, id say incense, ninja stars nunchucks and karate stuff seems to be popular, posters of jimi, bob, the doors, led zepplin and the grateful dead. and hemp jewelery. hope it helps

I would try e-cigarettes ... Green Smoke has an affiliate program. Pot smokers aren't going to be much interested in "addiction" or cessation products unless the site is specifically targeted to cessation.

    EVIL IDEA ALERT!

I'm calling this the Matrix pop-up.

Have a pop-up that is split down the middle. On the left it has an offer related to pro-marijuana activities (pipes, books about legal highs).

On the right it has an offer to help them quit. Use a PLR guide as the product for this if you don't have anything else.

Pop up headline "Red Pill - Blue Pill" and put a picture reminiscent of Morphius next to it.

Make sure you monetize both options and let their natural enthusiasm for the Matrix drive the sale. Pot-heads love the Matrix

I've worked in this niche and it's a potential goldmine (I don't smoke weed, and don't have an opinion about adults who choose to).

This might not apply to your site, but I'll suggest it anyway.

Legal bud has a bad rep.. people won't like it. The other legal highs are untested chemicals, popular but risky to people's health IMO.

Most of the major seedbanks have affiliate programs..

You could sell books/dvds by people like Jorge Cervantes, or buy a small amount of stock from headshop wholesalers.

For this type of site, it is ideal to offer other vices. Weed is used medicinally for some, but for most people it is a vice. A vice is temptation, so offer them something tempting that does not have a one off use. Also, for that amount of traffic I would create a cheap Ebook. You could write an informative pdf on the future of weed, types of pipes people can get, or best ways to utilize marijuana and sell it on the cheap. Ebooks are the gift that keeps on giving because you only have to write it once.
