There is a site called "Pleaserobme.com" that puts up twitter posts from people that leave home and announce it. The idea they are trying to get around is that it's stupid to tell the world you are not home.

The site is getting tons of traffic right now, so I've tried to see if it would pick up my tweet. I made a tweet minutes ago that told folks I was out of town and I'm waiting. I feel the added traffic won't hurt and confusing those that really are trying to rob people using that site is a good thing.

Quite a different idea with the potential to go viral, but I don't know how long it will last realistically - potential to get quite a lot of media coverage and visitors within a short space of time though.

The guy must be making a ton in Adsense right now. I agree its not a long term thing unless he can come up with a sticky idea. I too wish I had thought of it.

    Hello,
what if I say that I am not going to be home,I turn off all the lights, leave the papers
    outside.
I then wait for the burglar to come and then I blast him.
Would I get convicted for a killing?

Not in Colorado, Florida, Texas and a few other states. The minute somebody sets foot in your house, you are within your rights to shoot them. They call them "Make My Day" laws.

I'm afraid so Lou. You can't
      shoot someone unless they
attempt to harm you or your
family - even then the burden
of proof you were in danger
      falls on you.

If they want to come on your
      property, defecate on your
door step and steal your dog,
all you can do is call the cops.

If you shoot them, you're the
      bad guy.

      X

Perhaps it's server went to low speed mode because of the big traffic. Anyway, I don't know.

Very interesting. Never would have thought of something like that. Shows that you really have to be careful about what you share on the world wide web.

As far as shooting people under the above circumstances goes, every state and country is different.

I wonder if there would be any liability on the part of the site?

In general, I don't think there would be, but...you never know.

I'm always home (physically, not necessarily mentally), so I don't foresee me ever being on the site. Not to mention the fact that I live in a small town with friendly neighbors - and we all watch out for each other.

But I agree it's a bad idea to advertise to unknown people that you won't be home. especially if you are going on an two week, overseas vacation.

    All the best,
    Michael
