Here's What It Takes To Succeed In Internet Marketing

When you ask what is the #1 phobia people have, you often get the response of "public speaking". I think that bothers some people, but not everyone.

Here's my answer and it requires a little set-up. A lot of people try to fill their days with activities--and not so much because the really enjoy those activities, but because they fear the consequences of not having their daily time card completely filled.

I honestly believe that for the vast majority of people their number one fear is that of having free time and having to use that time to THINK. I'm talking about introspection, self-evaluation, and and genuine conscious thinking. Conscious thinking--Mike? I do that all the time. I'll bet you don't. Most of us do very little conscious thinking. We are conscious when we think, but that's not the same as conscious thinking.

But I think about what I want for dinner! No, not really. You mistake basic biological, hormonal, metabolic feedback your body gives you for conscious thinking. Even solving math problems, for the most part, involves regurgitating rote mental motor patterns previously learned.

Conscious thinking is something entirely different and to be a successful Internet marketer I believe it is a necessary requirement. Here is where the fear factor comes in.

Some night stay up until 3A.M. No television, no radio, no iPod, no sensory distractions. Sit alone in a dark room and think. Think about what you are doing. What's going right? What's going wrong? Conceptualize a great idea. Make a plan. Chart a course of action. Let your mind roam freely so that no idea that sails in is shot down by the thousand-and-one mundane distractions in everyday goings on.

If you can do this and get excited about doing it--I think you may have what it takes to succeed in marketing online. If the thought of doing some genuine stream-of-consciousness, free associative, unbridled conscious thinking like this terrifies you--I think you are missing a key ingredient to success in any entrepreneurial endeavor, especially making money online.

We live in a country where are great institutions jockey for position to become our surrogate thinkers, or thinkers by proxy. And most people are happy to let this happen. They don't want to think so they let large groups of other people do their thinking for them. Think about it, it's true.

So my real question, especially to newbies out there, is, "Are you willing to do your own thinking? Are you able to do some conscious thinking?" If you can't answer yes to those questions I believe you are in for a long, heavy haul trying to make money online.

I understand when beginners want to find mentors. I understand when they want short cuts. I understand when they want the secret formula for online wealth. But more often than not, the biggest "secret formula" is simply the ability to study, research, formulate, conceptualize, operationalize, and then give it your best shot. You need to make hard decisions along the way. But once you've put a plan together--go with it until the market proves you wrong. You can't be afraid of failure--it is an important ingredient to success.

And finally; It isn't about having money to get started. I often see posts here where the OP asks what you would do if you had $1,000 or $5,000 to invest in your IM business. And those are interesting posts to think about.

But know this: There are any number of people right here on this forum who could take, not a thousand dollars, or even a hundred dollars--but only ten dollars--and invest it in a domain name and one month of web hosting and parlay that into $1,000 in the blink of an eye. You don't need money to start. You simply must be dedicated and have a fire in your gut to succeed--you must have a hunger for success that will not die.

Preaching to the choir with me, brother, but I gotta tell ya...I wrote a piece a couple years ago about "institutions" trying to become our surrogate thinkers for us, and a lot of people just didn't get it.

Maybe I shouldn't have called it for what I see it as -- brainwashing. Maybe I shouldn't have named the institutions either. Might have hit too close to home for some.

You may have been kidding, but there are a lot of good ideas floating around the Warrior Forum. In a manner of speaking, by learning from others here, we have outsourced some of our thinking. The decisions with what to do with the ideas we gain remain ours and ours alone, but by adding the great ideas of others to our own thought world we have made our thinking a little deeper.

I couldn't agree more. When I first started this, I tried to buy every "secret formula" e-book available on the net. Some were great, others not so much. I did learn a lot from the ones that were great. However, the most I learned was from myself.

My pattern seems to be that I work during the week and use the weekend to refelect, replan, think, generate new ideas and priorites etc etc. A lot of this happens as I relax but also inspiration seems to happen at unsocial hours. It;s ok, the cat is a good listener

I so agree with Mike and Dennis. Not many are willing to come to terms with the fact that we have all been brainwashed into thinking we are incapable of being great. We all have the capacity to achieve great things. We are like advanced computers but trained to behave like simple calculators.

I agree with you whole-heartedly about us having surrogate thinkers and being brainwashed. I guess I've been lucky to be made aware of it through being around various good people and it's amazing once you're aware, how much you see it going on in the wide world around you!

I try do my thinking when I'm in bed but a thousand things start entering my mind and flying around. I need to take some deep breaths, clear my mind and think with tunnel vision.

What a shame..... this should be the goal of every human alive, to consciously evaluate their current situation, that of those around them, their future goals, what it all means, and how that affects their daily actions. If this was the case, the world would be a totally different place. With something like business/IM, meditating daily can help focus on the bigger picture and sometimes present solutions to problems that are too difficult to solve while in the middle of the forest.

Yeah there's some good stuff here.

But people *are* brainwashed. Here in the UK they don't think they can start a business without going to BusinessLink or their bank or getting a £10,000 website or talking to other "experts".

I started my online business with nothing - yes that's NOTHING, and it's made $100,000 since 2002. I guess it's not a massive sum (come on, I have a day job as well, I'm a busy guy!). My advertising spend to date is $0 and I set it up using a domain name I bought as a joke.

Mike, I take your words seriously and know that what you are saying is correct. Another fear that many people have is the idea that they have to perfect, that their website, their idea has to have everything lined up just right. While I agree that everyone should strive for their own idea of perfection in whatever they do, I still want those of us who suffer from this malady to think about the Big Businesses out there that don't worry about it at all.

Microsoft is the main culprit that will actually lauch a flawed product. It hits the market, millions of people purchase the product only to find out that there are some real "bugs" in the product.

Microsoft worries about being perfect after they have your money in their hands. They issues new releases, bug fixes, etc. for years. They reinvent the product many times before it is really perfect.

Look at the other technology companies who try to invade an industry without having all their ducks in a row. They provide services that do not work consistently and just take the customer complaints as the costs of doing business.

Car companies deliver cars to the public that have serious defects.

So when you have an idea for a product that will truly help people and provide information that will solve problems "Just do it" You can do your revisions, updates and perfect the product as an ongoing venture. But don't procrastinate because YOU don't think it is perfect. You may be sitting on your own goldmine.

Just my rant for the day
