So I just made a new site, what now?

If you just created a new site, what would you do to get it up in the search engines? I already pinged and did some backlinking, etc.

What do you mean "up in the search engines" if you want to see if it's been indexed, then you go to google and search for the URL of your site in "quotes." If it's there then it's indexed.

Other than that, you're going to have to compete for keywords and key phrases. You do that be ensuring your on page SEO is good and you have a sufficient amount of links leading to it.

    Don't know if this helped

start writing and get other people to write you many articles and then place a link down the bottom of these articles.

What sort of site is it?

If it's a blog then you want to write good informative articles and to be active in the blogging community. Each post should have targeted keywords but done in such a way that it doesn't detract from the quality of the post itself.

Being active in the blogging community requires leaving good quality comments on other blogs, specifically dofollow blogs as this will give you some link juice.

At one stage my blog had achieved PR4 in under a year.

First determine what keyword you want to rank for. Then write articles and submit to to dofollow blogs like Sire said.

Now when you write these articles and comment on blogs, it is VERY IMPORTANT you use your keyword in anchor text. So if you want to rank high for the keyword "dog training" make sure you use that key phrase most of the time.

The big question is - Did you check your competition before you bought your domain?

This will determine how much work you will have to do to get it

    "up in the search engines"

    How many pages is it?

    What niche is it?

Have you targeted low competition keywords?

    1. Write and submit articles to Ezinearticles and other article directories, with your site link in the resource box

    2. Do more backlinking

    3. Keep fresh and regular content on the site

    Wow, erm,

this is a classic case of "ready, fire, aim".

Have you done full keyword research? CAN you rank well for those terms with reasonable effort or is this a tough niche?

Start promoting it? What are you waiting for? Be sure that your internal SEO is right. Submit your sitemap to Google, Bing and Yahoo. Write a blog, write and submit rich content articles to build backlinks. Promote in other sites, groups and forums. Depending of the type of site, program or product you can rotate a splash pages on traffic exchanges to build buzz and brand on the pre-launch and lunching. Throw in some email marketing with contact solo ads, ezines... The possibilities are endless. What do you mean; "What do I do now?" PROMOTE!

There are way more traffic available than the search engines ever can bring. Focus on finding enough traffic from other places to acieve your income/traffic goals for that site.

This would consist of any type of marketing. Articles, video, forum etc.

When you start to submit content for traffic, you will also get higher rankings in the engines.
