Do you use your real name for Twitter?

Would you set up a Twitter account for your IM business (like @internetmarketing) or do you use your personal name(twitter account like @johnsmith) for your IM business? I know many marketers use their real name but I"m wondering if there is any benefit in using your main domain for your Twitter account instead.

What do you think?

It depends what your objective is, I think. If you're building up a site you intend to keep, real name makes sense in my opinion. If you're building up a site to eventually flip, then using and developing site brand so it can be independent from you is probably best.

Personally, I have lead with my OWN name to brand my content creation services and I have other accounts specifically for websites. A nice combo does the trick nicely so you can vary your posts, but stay ON TARGET to your followers within each individual account.

For my main blog I connect to twitter with I'm using my domain name as the username.

As for my other twitter niche accounts I sometimes use pen names. Or a mix of niche and pen name, like "Jimsmusic", obviously I wouldn't use that necessarily I'd use a better name, but this is just for example's sake.

I use my domain name for twitter. I do not think use real name is good idea because a lot of people is same name with you. And we do not famous as people can remember your name than a domain name.

I actually have multiple Twitter accounts as I tend to keep things separate as my audiences don't tend to mix well in that they're not interested in what the other one is about...

    - I have a personal / gaming / friends account which has it's own name.
    - I have a Twitter account linked to my blog, which was to be my internet marketing account
    - But then I created my new site and my blog one was named after my blog, which didn't really match the site. So Now I have a 'site only' one as well...

I do have a Twitter account under my real name, but I don't really know enough people in the IM industry yet that would care to know it lol. And everyone else I talk to falls under one of the above three...

I use my first name @calgreg

But I saw one today "JohnAttorney". I think it would be valuable to have what you do in your twitter name. Might help get some business.

For some people, especially bloggers, the full name IS their brand name, like GuyKawasaki.

That's pretty much one of the main reasons I have multiple accounts. My gamer friends don't care about IM, and my IM contacts don't care about my gaming life.

I just use a name that has something to do with my niche which is my blogging business. It all depends on what your ultimate goals are on what your looking to ultimately get out of Twitter. I do not think it matters that much as long as it is related to what you are trying to accomplish!

I'd like to use brand name for my business and have my real name for personal use. But if you do choose brand name, make sure posts are purely related to your products/services that followers would really find informative/interesting.

Here's the problem I have with using company name/virtual name over my own personal twitter:

      I NEVER update non-personal.

We have our company twitter that nobody ever updates. But I'll update my own if I see someone crossing the street on a hove-a-round...

If anyone has any tips for "remembering" to update the corporate one, that would be an interesting topic.

I would prefer to use my own name as it gives the visitors the perception that I have nothing to hide and I am a real person.

I think it will really depends on the main objective. If you want to brand your company name, I am sure you will use the company name for your twitter account.

Personal Name for personal account. Niche appropriate names for niche sites. Helps people decide whether to follow you or not without having to go through all your previous tweets to find out what your passions & interests are or what you have to offer.
Niche appropriate named accounts have more targeted lists (Meaning only 50% spammers )
If a personal name, many won't take time time to see if you share interests and the % of ppl that will follow anyone & never interact goes up, (including buying anything).
That has been my experience anyway.

I use my real name for one account, keywords for some accounts and pen names for others. It all depends on the niche and what I intend to do with the site once it is up and running.

One thing I like to do is to make up pen names that don't seem to exist. I'll do searches for names in quotes and look for ones that do not return any results so that I can more easily track things like articles picked up from directories or any web chatter about that name.

I always use my brand name for twitter and facebook pages ... not my real name. It all depends what your product/brand is.

Twitter is like private party and Tweeters don't like being sold to (they are not there to find the latest offer). Never indicate you're selling something, otherwise "real people" will hesitate to follow you back (except for bots who you don't want anyway). I always use a personal name (including pen names).

Im getting a lot more results using real names. I have tons of accounts but all of them have real names (wether they really exist or not) and pictures not brand names and logos.

More personal the better. Treat it as a personal communication medium and not just for branding purposes. This way, they will trust you.

    Hi there,

The key to stand out from the rest of the other Marketers is "branding yourself"

Many Marketers will use cliche names like: InternetGuru, GetRichWithMe etc and it does have some tone to it; however, I think it is really impersonal.

Especially when you do to start building a reputation online, the best thing is to brand your own name as much as possible.

It depends on what you want to do, really. If this is your primary business and you want to brand yourself, then I think it'd be helpful to use your real name. On the other hand, if you have a catchy/attractive domain name and you want that to be the brand by which you want to be known as (and you'd really like to focus on this), then it'd behoove you to use your domain name instead.
