IM'ers... You are not allowed to sleep....EVER.

All marketers should know that, once you start in the online business world, even though most of your business is automated, you should still NEVER consider or carry out the art of sleep if you want to be successful.

You see, you may end up selling a $17.00 product to a guy (PAID VIA eCHECK) at around 11pm to which you will receive the following message from him:

Hi,

Here is a copy of my payment receipt via PayPal. I have used same payment method for years, now problems.

PayPal will never change, same old pain in the a - - .

Please provide me a download link.

Thanks,

Darryl

and then at around 3am you'll get this message:

I just sent you a copy of proof of payment to PayPal but seems you want to wait until March 3rd to give me my download link.

I just contacted PayPal and cancelled the transaction.
When I pay, I expect to get what I paid for, not wait a week to get it.

I will spend my money elsewhere.

Sincerely,

Darryl

followed by a message from PayPal at 4am:

Dear Stephen Mount,

Hi, this is Bern from PayPal. I received a call from one of your client
regarding the payment he sent you for $17.00. He said that he already
send you the receipt of the transaction and was told that he will
receive the downloadable link. He have not receive the link yet up to
now. In line with this he wanted to request for cancellation of the
payment using eCheck that will take at least 3 to 4 business days.

If you have further questions, please do contact him to resolve the
issue as soon as possible.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us again.

Sincerely,
Bern

Google seems to be the exception. 99% of their income comes from 1.7% of their customers. And we wonder why they are banning people left and right. If they banned 98% of their customers, they'd save a billions in expenses and lose less than 1% of their income!

NOPE! The 1.7% pay for the other 100%(the 1.7 are included). If google somehow got rid of 50% of their customers, their income could drop over 60%! They would no longer be a leader, etc....

There is more to the 80/20 rule
80 % of your income comes from 20% of your customers
80% of your problems come from 20% of your customers
80% of your loss will come from 20% of your customers
80% of your time will be spent on 20% of your customers,
Most of the time, the 20% don't overlap.

So he made a payment with an echeck that takes days to clear, and demands a refund a few hours later because he hasn't gotten the download link. Nevermind that he wouldn't even let you wake up first to reply him, you haven't even (technically) received his money yet!

I think I may have dealt with this guy's brother recently.

He sent me a sob story, so I gave him some free advice that would have solved his problem.

      He didn't take it.

Then when his situation got much worse, he demanded that I fix it.

    Imagine it like this.

The Universe just withheld $17.00 from you in order to protect your from an annoying client.

So basically you paid him $17.00 to go away.

Well you never had the $17 to begin with so look at it as he did you a favor by going away. Be glad he's gone. You don't need clients like that.

    Sorry Steve,

I'm not going to side with you on this one, as silly as the customer does seem from the sellers point of view.

The seller needs to make sure people know their hours of business and that they will get their download link sometime during those hours of the next business day or send it automatically upon payment.

It's not the customers responsibility to assume or guess as to why they are not getting their download and know that seller is honest and actually sending it is it?

No "sane" customer expects the seller to stay up all night, but they want to know what is going on once they have sent payment, especially if they do not get it right away or they get worried.

Of course there will always be some nuts who you just can't please. Don't stay up for them :-)

I use the RAP script, and it does tell them that they need to wait before the check clears. That's how he found out that he had to wait. Paying with an eCheck is just silly. It can't be the first time that he's found out that you have to wait for it to clear before you get the item you purchased.

Exactly but I think you have it wrong. the moral of this story is that you should practice the art of sleep. When you wake you are fresh and ready for a new day and the customer that has product thief (complainers so early seldom stop until they get the product and demand a refund) written all over him hasn't gotten your product but has revealed you don't want him for a customer.

So like I am supposed to put some thing like "This Sales Page is "Live" from 8 am to 11pm Monday through Friday and closed Saturdays and Sundays? Oh and maybe you can contact me if I am awake in the middle of the night and I just decided to check my email at 3am?

I have never seen "hours" put on a sales page or product let alone a help desk. Get real.

Of course I am not saying he should do it that way.

On your thank you page if the product will not be delivered right away you can figure out something to say so the customer understands they may have to wait and have a general idea of when it will come. ...what is wrong with suggesting that you communicate clearly with your customers?

Well, if you want to look like a BIG company, you SHOULD have been there for him.

Having said that, NO, he DIDN'T pay you! He presented the code for an instrument to PAYPAL! Many stores don't accept checks anymore. Many COMPANYS don't! Most that do want OTHER info. They have you SIGN! And you sign a CHECK, not merely the code for one.

And checks are subject to bouncing. GRANTED, there ARE laws in the US against that, and fines for them, but I DOUBT they apply to something like what paypal gets, HENCE their recommendation. And it is easier to stop payment on a check and they go stale within 13 months. HECK, it can take DAYS to find out if the code is even any good. With credit cards, it takes MILLISECONDS to see if the code is likely good, and possibly SECONDS to find out if it is valid.

BESIDES, I HAVE to ask! Paypal sometimes pays people from MY checking account. So what is the difference? They validated that it is MY checking account, validated the code, and I am pretty much locked into it. AND, there are debit cards. So WHY use an ECHECK?

Since he's using e-check, he has to know the drill by now & using this as his little sneaky tactic to get downloadable goods for nothing.

PP is all for the buyer espec w/ digital products so I'm sure he's done this before & this is first notice from PP so most people send it to him no prob for free when they get that little notice for the first time.

80/20 those problems. Too bad you can't just anticipate whose going to be a pain and not allow them access to your site/product/etc. I've personally grown to hate PayPal. When buying and selling websites they take a huge cut, they are cumbersome and have some rather *strange* practices regarding refunds. I've gotten ripped off many times from buyers because PayPal always honors buyers refunds, even if they've have the product (website)

Tim Ferriss has a bit of an interesting section of his book about this whole 80 20 concept where he had a particularly difficult customer he wanted to strangle in his supplement business for Brain Quicken. He just said, we're not doing business any more. One sale usually isn't worth a giant headache most of the time...

However, I'd rather put these customer service problems in another persons hand, like Clickbank, so I can get some sleep every once in a while and let them take care of angry people all day.

I don't think you need to put up business hours or anything, its a website! I just mention on my sites that it is not an automatic download (download is only part of the course anyhow). But we get sales from all over the world and I don't think you need to be available 24-7 just because your website is open for business. You'd think people would at least give 24 hours before going insane without a response. But we all get silly people like this and yes you should be thankful that they weeded themselves out...they would have been a nightmare for you after the sale I'm sure!!

Best $17 you never got Steve!

This "customer" would have been a constant source of pain. Some people just generate negativity and are not happy unless they have something to complain about.

Back in the day when I was selling on eBay, I stopped accepting checks because I wouldn't ship the item until the check cleared and a couple people got ticked (even though it was seplled out in the auction description).

I wonder if PayPal allows us not to accept e-checks? I'll need to check that. I've had a few people pay me via e-check (I have one pending right now) but I haven't had issues with them so far. But I've had my share of 2:00 AM customers who get tweaked because something happening and I wasn't there to resolve the problem at 2:02 AM.

That's why I don't put the often used: "You can order right now even if it's 2:00 AM".
