Copywriters Who "Outsource"

Just wondering if this is common practice among copywriters. The copywriter I used admitted that he had outsourced the sales letter when the results came back as very poor. His policy is to offer a free rewrite...when I got the free rewrite I brought to his attention that the tactics mentioned in the letter were actually "illegal" and I would/could be prosecuted if I used the letter. His response was basically...."that's your rewrite, I'm done with you" I certainly understand that "time is money" and I was actually expecting a reduced fee for a rewrite/touch up. Instead I got the "red headed stepchild" routine

Was I expecting too much? His policy was a guaranteed rewrite and I was actually so disgusted with the results I was not even going to contact him again. It was he who contacted me for a testimonial and I told him about the poor results...then the subject of a rewrite came up.

Request for a refund and forget him...I am too, outsourcing my materials but I only select people who have the right to work with me... Tell him that is not the right way to treat a customer and to do a serious business....

Would it be "out of line" to ask for a refund?

Well, if it is okay for you to receive only 50% of what you paid for then it's up to you...

Just explain to him first that you are not satisfied with the product.. explain well why you are not satisfied and ask him if he can still help... maybe he can do some modifications... On the first place, he lied to you...so you have all the rights to demand..

I have a friend who happens to be a very good article writer (academic US English) and content rich articles. She has a Degree on Journalism from BU and is writing now to make ends meet after losing her job. She is also fully bilingual and can even write in Spanish and/or make translations. Send me a PM and I will forward the request to her.

I disagree with posting in threads to solicit work - the OP cannot PM yet to begin with (posts).

      Dan -

"Outsourcing outsourcing" has become more common for writers - and apparently now for some calling themselves "copywriters". You don't say what price you paid - but I hope it wasn't very much.

There is nothing wrong with it - IF THE customer knows about it and IF the work done is competent. Doesn't seem to be the case here. You can request a refund but don't hold your breath. Hard to get refunds sometimes for services rendered.

could not legally use the rewrite according to the insurance laws of the state that I am required to adhere to.
That comment threw me a bit - did you outline those laws to the writer - or was the copy so "out there" that a normal person would have known it suggested something illegal?

If I were you I would start over - hire a real copywriter - and ask questions before awarding the job. Pay half up front and remaining payment WHEN your work is done to your satisfaction. Alternative is to go through a freelance site and put the payment in escrow until the job is complete.

      Good luck.

Some copywriters do pass on work to their students but in my case
I let the client know that a student will be writing the copy but I
    would review the letter.

As to the illegal tactics, I'm not sure what they are but I guess this
would involve a total rewrite of the letter hence the negative response
you got. At the same time it's the copywriter's duty to know the marketing
laws within the niche s/he is writing for.

The agreement you signed with this copywriter should tell you what your
recourse can be. Most SERVICE types businesses don't offer refunds.
