Hi Warriors,

I'm new to this forum (only found it a few weeks ago) and new to Internet marketing (only discovered it last summer...)

I have clearly seen over the past few weeks that a lot of people on this board still haven't made much money yet.

So, here's how I went about my first offer as a complete 'newbie' just a few months ago... Feel free to copy any idea's/tactics in your own business

How I made $2,153 in the first 16 Days of my product being launched... (without a list)

Right, here goes. I'll try and keep this as brief as poss...

After attending a seminar on Internet Marketing last year - i was hooked!
So, when I got home - I was straight online trying to find a BIG niche product to sell (make money online, weight loss, etc). As that's where most of the big marketers seem to make money...

After weeks of trying to find a 'resell rights' product, I came to the conclusion that there wasn't any! Not at a decent price - i bought loads of 'resale rights' products, etc but nothing of ANY quality or value - all was cheap, filler stuff, so I decided to create my own product.

I looked around for people to work with and eventually found a suitable person... In the end we made a 'How to make money on eBay' DVD and 2 ebooks... (the person I worked with IS making great money on eBay - and I ended up with a great, high quality product that people would want.

That's very important when your deciding what market to go into or what product to create - it has to be something that ACTUALLY helps someone do what it says it will - not just theory...

Anyway, after creating a professional, quality product it was time to sell.
So, as all good marketers know - great copywriting is the KEY to selling stuff - in ANY market. I had learned that at the seminar I attended from Dan Kennedy...

So I spent a few month reading copywriting books and learned how to copy write - I'm still not perfect, but pretty good.

Next I created a simple webpage - really easy to do - or you can pay someone just a few $dollars and get it done for you.

Then I needed a way of driving traffic to my website. Here's the BEST bit. I learned a great way of driving CHEAP, TARGETED traffic to your website...

It's a good way of selling that I use, that's a bit different to PPC and the usual online advertising methods...

Say your product is an ebook on 'How to train your dog' for example. Go to your local magazine store and get copies of all the magazines on dogs... In the back of the mags you'll see the classified ads section (where you can place and ad) Simply, buy a small ad space (the smallest i've bought is 2cm x 3cm) and place word only, 'teaser' ad.

I.e the ad should read something like - 'Want to train your dog into the perfect pet?' Go to www.your-web-address-here.com for FREE info...

This directs 'ultra targeted' traffic to your website (i.e - killer sales page) and is really cost effective too - i've got ads for just a few $ sometimes (depending on the niche).

Give it a go - I've had great success with this method - and found it cheaper than PPC, etc too...

Anyway, back to my offer - I launched it this way, advertising in some targeted magazines/newspapers - and pulled in $2,153 in the first 16 Days! On my first ever project! That's just front-end sales from the advertising. I made more in back-end sales too!

Needless to say, I'm really pleased and its proof to anyone, especially newbies who might have doubts (I did before making any money) that anyone can make money in Internet Marketing.

I can't wait to launch my next project (a weight loss/fitness product) to see how it goes (i've learned loads more in the last few months - especially off this forum!)

My advice: Just take time to learn this stuff properly and TAKE ACTION - you'll be amazed at the results...

    I have never really thought about advertising in magazines like you mentioned b/c I figured it would be quite expensive, but you gave me something to think about...

      I couldn't agree with you more my friend!

      I think the biggest thing holding most NEWBIES back is self-doubt and that this stuff won't actually work for them (couldn't be further from the truth).

      And they fail to take action (I nearly did this, but boy i'm glad i did tho'!)

      The key is to believe in yourself, create a good product that people want and go for it as quick as you can - if you do everything properly, then it WILL work for you. That's my experience anyway...

          This sounds great! I will have to give it a try.

          For those just starting out, and perhaps skeptical, I can't see any reason that this couldn't work for affiliate products either. You can try it out for relatively little cost.

          Quit saying I can't and try it. It would probably cost you less than the next course or tool you are thinking about buying!

      Its a little-known trick that a lot of top marketers have used successfully for years and years to generate traffic (thats how I found about about it).

      Magazine and Newspaper sales are still HUGE...

      Think about it for a second. Say your into Cars and Tuning for example. And you buy a Car Tuning mag from your local store. Your reading through the mag and you see a classified ad at the back saying 'Want to Get an Extra 100BHP from Your Car's Engine... For FREE? Go to www.your-webaddress-here.com'

      Do you think this person (who is ultra-targeted traffic - i.e a car tuning fanantic) will check the website out?

      Of course he will! Then its down to your killer sales page and great product to deliver.

      Like I say, I've had great success using this method, so have MANY other marketers - i'm sorry if you can't believe that....

        Just to make it clear, I'm not doubting that you made those sales strictly from magazine ads, despite what everyone decided to infer from my previous post.

        I'm still curious about this marketing method though. You say you rented out a 2cm x 3cm ad at one point? Are you talking about those ads that you can find at the last page of a magazine, flooded by hundreds of other, similar ads?

        If so, then I'm quite impressed! Keep up some astounding work. Let us know if you ever come across any other unconventional [for us internet folk] marketing methods

          Yes, thats exactly the type of ads I'm talking about - they're usually at the back of the magazine called 'Classified Ads'. Surrounded by other, similar ads... The Key to being successful with those is to use your Internet Marketing skills, i.e copywriting - to make your ad stand out and get people to go to your website.

          Its very much like writing your google adwords ad (just an offline version, i guess...) - short, sweet and intriguing enough to get people to go to your website.

          The 3 x 2cm one I gave was the smallest I have ever taken out. On average I would say a 5cm x 4cm is more likely (depending on the price the magazine or newspaper charges...)

          Like I say, I've had great success with this method. If anyone else wants to use it then I say try it - you'll be really surprised at the results!

I never would've expected that to work because I can imagine only a small % go to the end of the magazine without skipping the classifieds, only a small % find your ad, only a small % end up going to your site, and then only a small % end up converting. According to my horribly rough estimates, you'd need a hell of a lot of viewers, and I know that magazine/newspaper sales aren't nearly what they used to be.

            So, how many ads did you end up putting out all together? Do you remember how much it cost you?

            By the way, I hope I'm not coming off as bitter; I really don't mean to sound as if I'm putting down your methods. I just want to learn more about this technique.

              Not at all. Just Sour. (Sorry, Couldn't resist )

              With specialist magazines that have fanatical audiences, I reckon most of them would read EVERY advert. Big, small, front, back, wherever. I know that car, hunting, and motorcycle fanatics do. Everyone's looking for that special for something to buy that gives them the edge over their mates.

              So if the ad was about something that grabs their interest, I'd imaging that a very high percentage would check out the website.

              No worries.

              Your not coming off as bitter at all. It took me time to get my head around this method - and I was very skeptical... until I tried it and actually worked for me.

              I put 3 ads out all together (one in a magazine, two in newspapers...)

              The total cost was around $270. Over the next 2-3 weeks (people don't always respond right away. Particularly with a magazine thats on sale for a whole month) I got around 370 hits to my website. The total readership of the publications I put the ads in was something like 70,000 readers combined...

              So only a tiny proportion either read my ad or actually decided to take action, but thats all you need. Like I said, the ones who do come to your website are 'ultra-targeted' if you pick the right publications to advertise in...

              And of the 370-odd visitors i got to my sales page, 25 bought my $97 product. So you can see, You really don't need that many customers to make a good profit.

              Although I would re-iterate, I spend time creating a top-quality product that people would want. And had a good sales letter. This was a well thought-out plan. Not a 'hit and hope' kinda plan...

              So, if you have a quality product and a great sales page give this method a go - it really does work...

      You're short sighted.. he did it for several magazines and if each magazine sells thousands of these magazines then a small portion are going to be interested. If his product is $39 he only needs 50 people for $1,950 and then he said he had backend sales so he probably didn't even need 50 sales.

      Again I don't know what he sold the book and dvd's for but I'm guessing it was more than at least $20 because a lot of the top marketers sell them for a couple hundred.

      Dan Kennedy's 'The Ultimate Sales Letter' and Ted Nicholas' 'How To Turn Words Into Money'

      Two of the very best copywriters in my opinion...

      I also studied lots of old and new, successful advertising. And kept a scrapbook of headlines, offers, etc that grabbed me. I found this very useful when looking for inspiration and ideas whilst writing copy.

      How would you would track traffic from these offline ads if you were also doing articles and other online stuff aswell?

        Yes, I read about Tim Lowe and Andrew Reynolds using this stuff to great effect too It really does work...

        I tracked my website via google analytics - just slightly change your web address. Say your normal web address was www.makemoney.com

        Simply use www.makemoney.com/free or something similar and track it like that...

          I can see you are based in the UK the same as me. Did you advertise in publications in the UK? I see you spend roughtly $270 and couldn't figure if it was in the UK or the US. 90% of my market is US based so I am wondering if it would be easy enough to place ads in the US if you are UK based?

          Any further info about this would be really appreciated.

            The more generic your product the harder this is to do. The fact that you are doing it with a money making product in mainstream magazines and newspapers is great. What's even better is that you can scale this up to other publications.

            It's much easier and effective if your product is to a targeted market. For example if you targeted scuba divers you could run ads in scuba diving magazines. The costs would be less than mainstream mags and newspapers.

            I've directed traffic to a website selling an expensive course to a niche market for years through classified ads in the back of specialty magizines. I used to run classified ads and direct them to free recorded message. Now I send them directly to the website.

            VERY IMPORTANT-set up squeeze page with autoresponder to capture visitors with good email sequence to follow. In time a percentage of those visitors who didn't buy in their first visit will buy.

            Hi, absolutely. You've got the jist with the analytics - that's exactly how I did it

            And the reason I converted my figures into dollars was because it seems as tho' 90%+ of the people on this brilliant forum seem to be from the US, so its only fair in my opinion.

            And yes, your right, there's absolutely nothing stopping you advertising in a US mag - even if your are in the UK. Just google the type of mag your looking for - and 99% of the time that magazine or newspaper will have a website with contact details and a lot of the time, advertising rates (including the classifieds)...

        No, not at all. They were more than happy to take my money

        They did have a read through my sales page via the web link I provided in the ad, but they were more than happy and could see that I had a genuine product.

    It opens up the possibilities of breaking into highly profitable niches without the battle of SEO, PPC etc....
    Throw in a squeeze page for the long term and you are looking at steady income.

    I just can't help getting amazed at how different the approaches people take to make money online. But after all, it goes down to the same basic ingredients.

    You need something to sell and you need targeted traffic. But this is not all to it. You also need a great product and a great copy too. These will make or break your business.

    The difference lies in the way people get these needs fulfilled. They use different methods to generate traffic. I never considered targeting offline traffic, I used to think if there is any business to be done, it should be done online. And now I have been proven wrong.

    Congratulations on your success! I think what I like most about your story (aside from how well you did) is how freely admit that you took the time to really do your research and learn about things like copywriting. I think the reason so many get so discouraged is that they think it can happen within a few days and when it takes more work than that they get discouraged and declare the whole field a scam.

    Incidentally, I'm one of those people who always reads the classifieds no matter what publication I'm reading. There's some great stuff back there--even if I don't buy anything there are always at least a few ads that are good for a chuckle. Good brainstorm to mine the readers like me!

      Because I cannot honestly believe you would have
      gotten sales that quickly from a magazine ad considering
      the time frame it takes to publish them.

        And Matthew, yes I did track where the sales came from by using a slightly different web address each time. For example, one ad would take them to www.MyOffer.com/free, say for the newspaper and www.MyOffer.com/info for the magazine, so its really easy to track.

        And it doesn't take that long to publish a magazine - the magazine I advertised in was a weekly. You also get fort-nighties, monthlies, bi-monthlies (as i'm sure you know) - so it really depends what publication your advertising in to how quick the response will be...

    To those who say making money online is dead or only for the Gurus, here is an inspirational story of a newbie who refused to accept failure and creatively stuck to his guns to come out with something beautiful.

    Wow Ricci, I'm blown away, I'm saving this thread and pointing it to my protegees to see that when your heart is in the right place, you put in a decent amount of work and solve people's problems, you have no choice but to be successful.

    My Advice to you: Now you know what works for you, reproduce that same system in different niches.

    The Sky Is Not even enough to limit you.

      And thats what I intend to do now I've found a method that works - use it in different niches. In fact, I'm currently working on my next project - a men's fitness/health/weight loss type product...

    Congratulations. Oddly we have done some advertising in Classifieds in National Newspapers but for some reason the idea of adverts in the back of speciality magazines passed me by! Out of nuggets like this are greater fortunes made!

    Eat your heart out sceptics. Money can be made online in short periods of time but don't necessarily think it can be done overnight. Whilst this is a two week success story it comes at the end of 6 months or so of study.

    Just remain Focussed and the money can soon come pouring in your way!

    Just goes to show what commitment and belief in your self can do.
    I have found it is real impossible to make money online if you just stay on the learning side and not taking any action on the doing side.

    Ricca perfect business model learn abit, do a bit, learn abit, do abit, and keep testing.

      Circulation (readership) may have gone down a bit since the Internet, but they're certainly not dying... The biggest newspapers here still sell MILLIONS of copies every day. And the biggest magazines sell hundreds of thousands of copies every month - still a massive market and LOADS of targeted traffic if you pick the right niches

      Yes, I am most certainly using this method. I'm currently working on my next project at the moment, but I will definitely be using cheap, classified ads in specialist niche magazines and newspapers to get traffic. It's a fantastic, less-competitive than PPC, cheap way to get traffic my opinion...
