Been On Warrior Forum 2 Years. First Rant!

Ok, this is my first rant here on my beloved WF.

Those of you that have these fly in or light box opt-in forms on your blogs or site without a clear "x" or close button, please stop because not only is it really annoying when I want to read your content but can't figure out how to x out of your light box it forces me and I am sure many others to just leave your site and never return. Surely this must be responsible for tons of lost sales.

Light box optin is great but make sure your "x" or "close" button is visible..

The end..

Strange... I've never run into a box without an "X"... perhaps a coding error?

Haha .. I thought I was the only one. I would normally leave the page immediately without wasting another minute locating where the bloody "x" was..

This is really frustrating for me too - if you do keep encountering them there are 2 things you can do though - most of the time if you just click outside of the box on the screen and it will go away just the same, also you should be able to press the "Esc" key to get rid of it just the same, but even these 2 tricks assume that it was coded right

After many exchanged eMails I finally figured out that he's clicked a link that opened a new window...

... can't go "back" can you!

Thats priceless. I once had a guy complain that he couldnt download a copy of my website, because he wanted to use it to make his own. He said it "Wasnt fair to people who cant design their own sites"

(Ie: He was trying to use "Save page as" to make a copy of my site, and use it as template. But most of the site was designed using Jquery, and he obviously couldnt figure out how to duplicate the .js)

Every now and then, I must admit I do fill in those forms.

        But...

I use a fake name and e-mail that lets them know how I feel.

        Name: Nice try
        E-mail: refusetobeforcedtooptin@badmarketingtechnique.com

Or something like that. Whatever strikes my fancy at the time.

Ha, good idea. Will have to try that. Reminds me of something I occasionally do in the offline world when I get sick of receiving junk mail for some offer that I never 'opted into'. I occasionally send those prepaid envelopes back either empty or with a note giving them a small piece of my mind - that way, they at least have to pay the postage.

Don't do it often, since it's not really productive, but when I'm having a grumpy day, it helps takes the edge off.

          Jan, try this.

Go back to the site and hit F11.

Some of those sites make the light boxes so that the only way to see the
X is if you're in full screen mode.

I know because I've run into the same problem and after doing an F11, I
          got the X.

Try it. I'll bet you that is exactly what's going on.

The latest one that got me ticked off I had to hover over the top right corner and then the "Close" suddenly appeared. Steven do you think this is good or poor marketing? I think it's poor but have no stats to prove it.

            Cheers

Yeah me too. It's like they're forcing you to optin, which is annoying.

      @ OP: are you Dutch?

Good grief, Michael, the more you reveal about yourself the more alike it seems we are. You used to say it was the Wisconsin water or air, I'm starting to wonder if we're not brothers from another mother. I can't tell you how many times I've done that - tons, to be sure!

About the lightboxes, some of them don't show the X until you rest your cursor on it. So if it isn't taking the full screen up, and your cursor is not on the lightbox, try that and the X might magically show up.

Sometimes I get this when I'm on my netbook...the screen is too small to see the whole thing and of course, scrolling does nothing to move the actual opt in box.

Next time I'll hit F11 and see if that works!

    Thanks Steven.

I used to use the F11 trick all the time for certain sites. I forgot about it. It will come in handy for some Web 2.0 sites I have a problem with, though I would still leave any page that tried to force me to opt-in in that way.

    All the best,
    Michael

Such issues could be browser-related, Jan.

Also, I have a laptop that displays just about everything
correctly with most browsers I've tried. I have a desktop
with a 20" widescreen monitor, which does some weird
things displaying some sites, buttons, opt-in forms, and
    even software.

I can work-around it easily enough, and I keep playing
with the video card settings, but fundamentally I think
it may have to do with these newer monitors which
emulate the 16x9 aspect ratio of modern televisions.

If you are using a widescreen monitor for your browsing
(and many people are these days... .many newer laptops
use a widescreen format too) you may have a hardware
    issue giving you trouble.

Another thing I've seen is simply poor color choices.

If I hit 'select all', sometimes the negative image will show me where the "close page" or X link is...
