Not Getting My Email - Causing Big Problems

Hi guys,

I have a website running on hostgator and a reseller account. I setup two email accounts and then set it up on google mail so me and my biz partner could receive our email on google mail. We're not receiving this email though and we can't seem to send email either.

Some times we get it, some times we don't. And we always receive things hours after they have been sent and it's a huge threat to our business. Hostgator said we need to purchase an email server, whatever that is (sounds expensive) or google apps. And thats all they would say about it. However, I have other emails that seem to be working fine in the way I described.

Can anyone give me some input on some more helpful advice than hostgator support? Any kind of checklist I should run down to make sure I got everything right?

Edit: I should note we can still get email by using the email clients hostgator provides on their cpanel, however getting it to googlemail in a timely manner just seems to be a nightmare!

Cheers in Advance

If I'm understanding you correctly, you have two hostgator email accounts such as endgame1@hostgator.com and endgame2@hostgator.com which forwards email to two gmail accounts, such as endgame1@gmail.com and endgame2@gmail.com.

If that's the case, I do the same thing on plenty of sites without problems.

However, gmail can be a pain if there are any attachments in these emails. Gmail won't forward .exe .bat .csr, and a number of other file extensions

I've found emails in my bluehost domain email account that I did not get in my gmail account, and I'm pretty sure it is because of the extension of the attachment. I wish gmail or bluehost would at least give you a notice of failure.

In any case, the fact that you are receiving any email means that the forwards are setup correctly.

One thing you might do is look at emails you do recieve from hostgator and check out the routes it went through. In bluehost, you can also test send an email and it shows you the path it took. I'd be surprised if hostgator didn't have something similar.

The next step after that would be to switch hosting companies.

You assess the situation correctly bigdaddy, but now we don't seem able to get or send any email at all. Changing hosts might not be a bad idea at all.

    Hey Al.

I had tons of problems with email when I first started and then I hosted all my stuff with D9 Hosting and never had a problem since.

Also, their support is top notch. D9 is a UK based hosting service run by Paula Brett and they have more of an insight into the needs of internet marketers being marketers themselves.

Hope you get it sorted anyway pal and let us know how you get on.
