twitter follower building questions...

As I understand it, "automatic" follower building method(s) work using a bot that goes out + FOLLOWS others, based on the twitter category. There's also the manual method of doing it (labor intensive). Then, you hope that the people you follow, follow YOU in turn. Thus building your followERs.

Do I have that correct so far?

Ok, now the question is, does the bot (or do you (manual method)) make any other distinctions about who you follow? Just by overall category? Or do you also go by the # of followers THEY have? What criteria do you use to decide who you follow? Because if it's JUST by category, do you do a category search, then just go "click-follow, click-follow, click-follow" until you reach [whatever number/quota] per day?

Another question -- once you do all this intensive following of other people, do you pay any attention to what they tweet TO YOU (in your inbox)?

Also, does twiiter care if you transfer (or SELL) your twitter account to someone else? Does that violate the TOS?

Please advise.

Thanks!

PS: Another question -- how can people possibly pay attention to all the tweets they get? -- even "regular" people -- doesn't their inbox get SWAMPED with dozens of 140 character TRIVIALITIES? I see from the marketER's point of view why we would want as many followERs as possible. But from the potential customer's point of view, why would I want to take the TIME to... a) SELECT whom to follow, and b) actually pay attention to the tweets I get (in my inbox). Then I must take the time to UNfollow the ones I do not want to follow any more. Seems like it requires learning a "new hobby." Like the modern-day CB-radio. Time-wasting drivel.

Also, lets say I have 100 followers -- then 2 days later I have 150 followers. The new 50 people have not seen the tweet I sent to the original 100. But if I send the same tweet out again (so the new 50 can see it), then the original 100 will be getting the same tweet TWICE, no? By informing the new 50, I may be pissing off the original 100, yes?

You are right, following other people is still one of the best ways to have followers. And having very targeted followers gives you results. Its easy to have very targeted followers. You can do the following.

    1. Go to Advanced Twitter Search to search for tweets that mentions about your niche or any keyword related to that niche. After your search, dont just follow them all, I suggest you ignore those users who dont have pictures and those tweets that contains links because it is a good sign that it is just a spammer. You need to maximize your daily following limit.

    2. You can follow the followers of the people already popular in your niche. If you have no idea about the people following in your niche look at Twitter Search, Twitter Directory, Twitter Yellow Pages :: Twellow

    3. You can also follow listed in other peoples list

    4. Look for popular #hash tags and use it in your tweets. It is better if you can find one related to you niche. It is a good way to get notice by thousands of other users. You can look at Twubs to find the most popular #hash tags.

I dont pay much attention about all of their tweets but sometimes Im checking for mentions and replies for me with the @username thing and giving a reply.

This task really requires time if you do it manually.

There's only so many times you can hear great things about an IM method before you give it a go!

It screams spam, but I'll give a shot and cross it of the list.

Anyone got any twitter software to recommend? Free of otherwise? Yes jayanuaria, I've checked out your sig

    Hi TW,

You are right in thinking you are building your followers be following others.

You have to monitor the ration of people you are following to people that are following you.

Also you can retweet the message so that your new followers do not miss out but maybe reword the message slightly so that you do not send the same to the original followers.

Always tweet a mixture of messages do not send only advertising tweets! Mix it up with tweets of jokes or free advise for example.

    Hope This Helps

    Regards,

    Ian

Exactly. The mistake most people do when using twitter software is that they just massively and blindly follow everyone...wrong you have to build a credible profile, tweet often and content related to your niche, add links etc.. and followers will come.

Software: I would suggest www.socialoomph.com it is a powerhouse in my mind. It runs about $29 a month now, it used to be twollo.com and they were bought out. You can schedule posts, auto follow, unfollow, auto dm. all the good stuff.

Although it is only for 1 account.

Really if you want to get serious about Twitter marketing go get the twitteradder software for unlimited accounts.

Setup all your autofollow stuff, and then set about 60 messages to auto rotate every 5 minutes.

It is definately a "spam" type deal....but it will work like gangbusters.

    Hi Milo,

Milo - Great to hear from you and for adding to this topic!

I did mention later in my post as you also mentioned that you need to provide quality content on your tweets. With a mixture of great free content and then some links for your products. Do not just tweet links to your products.

I do not see anything wrong when setting out to follow others in your niche to get focused followers back.

    Cheers,

    Ian

Yup. Quality really matters, you cannot go wrong with it. Im sorry to say this but spam still works, based on experience, spam works on niches that have high urgency.

I agree with socialoomph, it is good if its okay for you to pay monthly and have the time to spend. But it is a great tool, you can send you tweets even you computer turned off. You might want to check my WSO in my signature. It is an all in one twitter software, it has tweet scraper and reply generator you can also schedule those tweets or send it to socialoomph if you are using their services.

    Good luck..

    Regards,
    Jay

Today John Reese deleted his twitter acct (250,000 followers) -- for exactly that reason.

    Hi guys

    You ask some good questions.

There is a huge debate about how to use Twitter, whether to spam or not.

I personally do a combination of "sales" tweets, useful tips, quotes etc. I interact with others, RT others and build relationships. All of this takes time even though a lot can be automated.

But I get a HUGE amount of traffic from Twitter. I now have over 38,000 followers and yes it can sometimes be hard keeping up with everyone but I use either Tweetdeck or Hootsuite to manage my followers etc.

This week alone I have receive 1,289 hits to my site (and its only Tuesday lol) just from Twitter. Do it right and you will reap the benefits.

I have written an article about Twitter and some of the great applications that can help you. Check it out here.

When I fist opened a twitter account I did follow some people in a hope that they follow me back and the ones who followed back where about 10% .

It was ok then as I could remove non followers in one go but now twitter has changed it so now If I was to use that method I would end up with lot of people I follow and not many people to follow me back.

Anyway Now I do not initiate any followings myself I just let people to find me and start following me fist then I follow them back. And the best way for people to find you is to install a button to your website, something that would stand out so that people can easily start following you. It does require some traffic to your website in order to work.

About selling your twitter account I think it is not allowed by twitter TC, just need to do it unofficially.

I'm still not getting the point.

If I'm a followER, I simply CANNOT follow too many people, right? I mean, if I follow many, many people, I'll be spending all day reading tweets -- no?

Doesn't everyone's day break down into two main portions?

    1) Fielding incoming info (learning, incoming msgs, etc.)

    2) Getting something constructive/productive DONE (creating info, working on/in one's biz, being helpful to others, etc.)

One is learning the other is (basically) preaching.

One is using one's eyes + ears -- the other is using one's mouth.

    Incoming vs. outgoing.

    Eating vs. 'puking'

If one is to get something DONE, one must desperately try to figure out how to keep one's inbox LESS full -- not try to FILL it up as much as possible! -- no?

If you spend too much time on #1 activities, there's less time for #2 activities.

Hence my *twitter = the modern-day CB-radio* idea -- aka a potentially colosal time waster.

At least John Reese seems to (also) see it that way.

So I ask agian -- who exactly is out there signing up to FOLLOW many, many people (in the real world)??? And WHY are they doing it (assuming they are)? How in the world can the benefits outweigh the gum-up-the-works drawbacks (for such people)?

    Thoughts?

You can have another personal twitter account where you follow only people who's tweets you are interested in reading.
