Keeping Your Subscribers Warm

Hey guys,

I've recently started building my list. The problem is I haven't really begun to promote my website yet or rank well at Google. I will be this week.

Until then though, people subscribe to the newsletter, one by one, very slowly so until the big traffic comes in I might have 10-20 subscribers. I don't really want to start promoting any products until I have about 100 subscribers.

Currently I have like 5 subscribers that I want to keep "warm" so they wont unsubscribe until I can really start e-mail marketing. I don't want to create big and well analyzed e-mails just for these 5 people - or should I? How do you guys do this?

-Guy

Start creating the big and well analyzed emails now for a couple reasons. The first of which is you can organically gain more subscribers. You will also build a friendly relationship with them so when they start seeing your emails in the future there won't be a radical change.

Most importantly, by crafting the well analyzed emails you'll get in the mindset to do it in the future, you'll get better at it, you'll learn what converts and what doesn't. Start now so you'll be ready for when you're at your amount of target subscribers!

    Good Luck!

  • The best thing is to create a good email sequence with useful and non-pitchy content. The first few should go out every day (to build trust and likability), and then start spacing them out to maybe one email every few days or even a week (so they don't forget about you, but dont burn them out either). Of course, set it on a autoresponder sequence to run 100% on autopilot.

And then, here and there whenever you have something good to promote, broadcast it away.

This sounds a lot like a beginning singer or comedian who sees only five or ten people in the audience and wonders why he should give them his best stuff.

If you count people's value by how many there are, you'll never have a "good" audience. Give those five folks your very best - try your damnedest to blow them away - and they'll start telling their friends about you.

Try never to forget that, from their perspective, your audience is always an audience of one.

Get into that mindset of respect, and later, when the numbers get big, you'll never be tempted to let down your quality for any reason, ever.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,

The folks above me nailed it. Write to a list of one just as you would write to a list of 100,000. No kidding. There really shouldn't be any difference.

One exception of course is that it's easier to interact personally with a smaller list. For example, ask for feedback or comments on something, and then reply individually to all who do reply.

But for the quality of your articles, the pitches you send, etc... no difference.

    Cheers,
    Becky

BTW -- when you do build the big list, don't think of it as a big list. You need to still write to the list as if you're writing to ONE person. No one likes to feel like a number or feel like they're just one of many. Everyone wants to feel special... and they want to feel as if your emails are just for them.

(That's copywriting 101, but definitely applies to list building.)

Look at it this way: if you can convert these 10 subscribers to buyers right now, you got an initial investment to use for advertising your website and email list.

Those 10 subscribers can, by doing that, become your goldmine.

That's how I started building my list. Got 3 sales out of 5 buyers because I really bonded with them. They became my very first customers in that business. With the money I bought some ads at sites that yielded another 50 subscribers.

Keep repeating until you're tired of it, because you can never have enough subscribers or customers!

Personally I would leave them alone for now and grow the list a bit more. I tend to wait until I get at least 100 each time before I deliver a single email.

If you hit them with stuff and get it wrong, you lose them straight away. If you don't make contact, the chances are they will not unsubscribe - why would they, you have not reminded them they are on the list. So take your time, sharpen your offer and get redy to deliver something great.

I absolutely understand where you are coming from. And, NO, you don't have to invest the same resources in 5 cusotmers as you would with 100,000. That would be a poor investment.

However, you need to keep those 5 folks "warm" and work on getting them to put money in your pockets. Not doing that would be an even worse business decision.

So, here is some simple, practical advice:

Send a short email every 2 weeks. Something like this should suffice (using your sig line as fodder for the example here):

    -------------
    Happy Monday, firstname!

I feel like starting the week off with a bang and I just learned something that has motivated me to do just that -- and I wanted to share it with you right away!

I tested a new "pick-up" technique at the bar on Saturday... and it exceeded my wildest dreams.

No long story here, just the one-sentence gist of it: blah, blah, blah.

(Btw, I picked up this tip from Joey over that the barscene.edu forums. Thanks, Joey!)

Here's the direct link for more info and results. Shoot me an email with how it works for you (especially if you can improve upon the technique!)

    L8R!

    --------------------

That should take all of 2 minutes to figure out. I am sure you can invest that time.
