How to Monetize my Weight Loss Journey

Hey,
I have some weight to lose. To keep myself motivated, I decided
to blog about it. I remember reading about a female warrior who wanted
to monetize her weight loss journey. I have searched high and low for
that thread and can find no trace of it.

Anyway, I've decided to do the same. I registered a domain yesterday. I
also set up a YouTube account to video tape my weight-ins and talk
about my progress. I will be following the South Beach diet and joining
a gym (well, the YMCA).

Would really appreciate some ideas on how to monetize this beyond
Adsense and clickbank products.

Thanks in advance,
Tam

I have a weight loss/workout site about P90X that does very well for me. What I would also suggest that you do is to create your own Facebook Page and keep it updated regularly with pictures of your progress. You can put a link to your site right on the page, I do this for P90X results and it have gotten me some pretty good traffic.

I'm definitely considering a Facebook page. Pictures? I'm gonna have
to think long and hard about that one though.

First of all well done. I struggle with my weight and yo yo like anything!

I would love to hear how you get on, please do let me know the details of your blog.

Have you tried placing ad images in your blog of diet/weight loss related topics? They work like adsense but are images instead and often looks like they are sponsoring you.

As time progresses and you get more hits to your site you could also approach larger diet/weight loss companies and ask them to sponsor you for advertising on your site. Win win for everyone.

Also try and get some press coverage as that will help you, both online and offline.

    Best of luck

Also make sure that you are as detailed as possible to your readers with what you are doing that gives you success. I have found that the more detail orientated that you are with your journey, they more people will be glued to your results.

The think with weight loss and fitness is that people are always looking for something that will work for them. If you provide people with proven results, you will have a large list of fans that you can monetize from.

If you are, then running a blog, combined with your tube page and facebook all hooked into an affiliate link to the relevent product while you follow it would be compelling with high conversions.

I would run a very prominent opt in on your blog offering weeky updates of your progress and perhaps something free.

For free you can often get brandable PDF's from one of the above programs and use it to give away to entice your list.

You will ABSOLUTELY want to take pictures.

Even if you don't choose to use them immediately, take them.

In terms of monetary value, they are priceless, without visuals your story lacks oomph.

And of equal importance is the progress you make can be marred when you can't see where you came from.

People often develop an inability to remember how far they have come and become concerned with the fact they couldn't shed 2 lbs this week, despite the fact they have already lost 30lbs.

Dated photos cement progress and give you a positive mental picture and focus of where you where, where you are and where you want to be.

Good luck with your business/fat loss journey.

This can certainly be monetarized, you can keep it simple and just put adverts on your side bar, or you can go heavier and review various weight loss products and offer an affiliate link.

If you do a simple search for "weight loss blog" you will see a LOT of these sites which give a weight loss journey and sell products / review products / have adverts on their site. Here are a couple:
    Fatty Weight Loss Blog
    http://www.formerfatguy.com

Looking at the traffic quickly on these 2 it looks pretty impressive - both getting something like 20-50k a month (on a very rough comete.com estimate) so there is definitely potential there, and I think the video blogging would help to keep people hooked and really follow your journey.

Good luck with the blog - and with the weight loss

great idea. I know of two people that make over 6 figures from their weight loss blog and youtube channels.

YouTube - charliejames1975's Channel (the fact that she works out in a sports bra and pig tails sure helps) but she has over 100k subscribers.

    Also go and check out
    YouTube - newfitnessvip's Channel

This guy just documented his 16 week journey through video. And drives TONS of traffic to his youtube videos and blog. (for some reason his first youtube channel was disabled but he had over 125k subs). He also uses an email list and ocasionally blasts clickbank products (like truth about abs) and makes a killing.

    A few thoughts:

--Above all else, make sure you're 100% dedicated to this. This has to be something you *have* to stick with, and have to succeed at. B/c if not, if you *do* end up getting a fair number of viewers/followers on your site, you're gonna look like a complete tool for going all the way w/the project.

I say this b/c a number of months back I had a guy come to me (I design strength & conditioning workouts for fighters/athletes/military/regular joes/etc) and ask for my help as he was entering a local version of "the biggest loser". If he did well (which there was no real reason why he couldn't have), he'd get coverage on a local radio station and such. I saw it as a fantastic marketing opportunity, and put together a really good and detailed program for him. He set up a blog, did a couple vids...I even promoted him on my blog, in my newsletter, etc. He updated his blog exactly three times. I felt a like an idiot at the end for telling people to watch him, and in the end, he made himself look bad.

So, just know that if you're gonna do this, it has to be all or nothing.

--This is like any other site - you're gonna need to drive traffic. So you're gonna need to give people a reason to be interested. Personally, I think your best (and easiest) bet to drive traffic would be via facebook. If you don't have a FB page, set one up, and add everybody you know. Maybe even setup a fan page.

This is better than just a blog, b/c people need a reason to check out your blog, whereas they're on FB already. These are friends of yours (add their friends, get them to add people, etc.), so they should be interested already, and work it to grow virally. Develop "relationships" with the people at your FB page by not only talking about your weight loss stuff, but other cool things you like or would have in common with your "friends". Add plenty of other people as you see fit.

Use FB to drive traffic to your site/blog in that every time you post an update, post the link to your FB account, and make mention of it in your status updates. Use your relationships w/people on FB to get them to check it out.

--While people wanna hear detail on what you did, they wanna hear success more. Weekly weigh-ins, measurements, pics, etc will keep them more interested than what this past week's workouts were. When they'll become interested in this stuff is down the road and they see you've lost XX lbs.

--Along those lines, every so often (maybe once/month?) post "to date" results. So if you weigh-in, do measurements, or whatever weekly, each month (or even each week, it's whatever) post how much you've lost "to date". Again, this is what people wanna see.

--Don't give away the farm with your info. Share your experiences more. Tell people how much better you feel. How you just had to buy new clothes. How you fit into that old pair of jeans again. That sorta thing. Selling weight loss is more about psychology than anything. People don't really care about inches or lbs for the most part (unless it's a health issue). They care about wearing their old college letterman jacket or prom dress again.

Besides, if you give away too much info on what you're doing, then there isn't really any point in anybody taking advantage of your affiliate offers. Telling them you're doing the South Beach Diet is one thing. Telling them what you ate for dinner last night is something else. Giving them your detailed menu plan for the week is giving away what you had to pay for, as well as giving them a reason to not have to buy.

--You might not like the idea of pics, but they will DRAMATICALLY increase your following. If worse comes to worse, take the pics, and just post them later on as "before and after" shots. Though doing "before and during" along the way will entice people more, IMO.

--Go to the WSO forum and find the WSO by the Rhodes Bros on "Weight Loss Niches" and get it. Phenomenal info.

--Google "john stone fitness". This dude basically did what you wanna do, though he turned it literally into a daily deal where he took pics, logged his workouts, etc. He started this whole thing years ago, and was actually able to get enough people interested that he got sponsors and the like. His site might give you some ideas, though his case/success (financially) is, I'd think, a pretty rare one.

    Hope some of that helps.

Really good advice.....would like to add that I personally know Arnel(the u tube abs guy) He is a great fitness pro and he spent months building his list, giving away free stuff etc etc and Rob (the fat guy) also had a lot going for him prior to putting up his blog ..He and I were both part of Tom Venutoes/Jon Bensons Fit Over40 book and that jumpstarts anyone onlone success...so it will take some time but the advice above is right on!

In for a penny, in for a pound. Okay, I'm convinced on the pictures.
I had no idea how lucrative this niche is. My first thought
was to put up a blog to motivate myself to follow through
on my fitness goals. Perhaps do a few videos. Make a
couple of hundred in the process.

I am doing the South Beach diet via the book, not the
online program. I like this diet for many reasons. It's not just a diet,
      it's a lifestyle change.

I used to have a weight loss site with lots of traffic, and from my experience, the best way to monetize is by building a list, and doing email marketing. 50% of my sales used to come from a free trial CPA offer, which I had set up as OTO (one time offer page, they see it right after subscribing to your list).

On the email messages, a good idea is to choose one EFFECTIVE offer, and have a link to it on the top of every email message that you send. The message itself should be pure valuable content then. This should convert pretty well

    Hope this helps
