Prevent company SPAM with a private registration - Fact or CRAP?!

Hey guys...

I just removed the private registration from like 8 of my domains
today to save a few bucks on another annual renewal.

The rep on the phone said, "Now, Emmanuel, you DO realize
that by removing the private registration on these domains that
you are susceptible to a wide variety of SPAM from companies,
don't you?"...

I replied, "Yes, I understand" as I thought of the other domains
I've had for a while (with good SERP rankings) that have never
received any type of SPAM as a result of them being "not privately
registered" either.

So, what's my point? What's my question?

Well...

How do YOU feel about the whole GoDaddy point of view about
saying "If you don't have a private registration you'll get SPAMMED"?

I've never had any SPAM as a result of any of my other domains
not having the private registration.

I mean, I understand, from a sales perspective, that they would
obviously want the upsell (the private registration), but I am
open-minded...do they have a point at all?

I'm not regretting my choice to remove my private registrations,
but since I just got off the phone with them it's fresh in my mind
and I thought what better group of people to ask than my fellow
Warriors about the real benefit, use, and "protections" of having
a private registration on domains.

Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns?

We'd love to hear them...from anyone...yes, that means YOU too!

  • I think offering private registration in the first place is an abomination, and there should be a law against it.

      Interesting...

Please elaborate on that a bit for us...why do you say that???

    • Really...

Hmmm...all my domains are with GoDaddy because...well...that was the first registrar I came across years ago, and I've just stuck with them with all my following domains since to keep everything in the same place.

If Namecheap does all the same things as GoDaddy (as far as being a registrar, anyway) for the same price, why would anyone want to be with GoDaddy VS. Namecheap, then? I guess this opens another topic which there is probably a thread on.

Perhaps I should go check them out if I can have private registration for the same price as GoDaddy without one.
