How do I see their Backlinks???

Is there a way to see what exactly my competition has for backlinks. I am using programs that show me how many backlinks they have, but I would like to see where they are getting them from, so I can better decide how to link my site.

You can't find all your competitions backlinks... You may find a 10th of them in yahoo or some other lame backlink program. Fact is you will never find them all because no system can track them all.

Stop wasting your time trying to find out what your competition is doing, you are best to use that time to run your own business.

Personally I could care less what my competition does....

      James,

I usually agree with most of what you say on here but I definitely don't agree with this.

Sure, you will never find all of your competitors backlinks, but you can definitely find a lot of them.

You can find hundreds of great sources for links from looking at your competitors backlinks. After all, they've already gone and done the research and gone and got the links, so looking at your competitors linking patterns can paint a pretty nice picture.

Additionally, if you look at a bunch of sites all ranking for the same keyword they will often have some links from the same sites. If they do, it's always a great idea to get links from those same sites as them.

There is plenty to gain from looking at your competitors links.

This is true Pat but it is also why many many fail due to they spend way too much time looking at their competition. Personally I do not waste my time.. In the time it takes me to go look up my competition and spying on them I could have written an article, distributed that article, done 200 bookmarks, slapped up a squidoo and hubpage, and pinged everything.

If I was spending this time tracking my competition I would not get half done what I do now. Now lets look at people that have a limited amount of time online. Some only have 3 - 4 hours as they have full time jobs. If they spend all that time tracking competition they would never get their business going and thus fail.

All the tracking and the spying in the world will do you no good if you never take the time to get your business going ...

I personally use the SEOQuake (free) add-on on my FireFox browser. It is a bit intrusive with a small bar on top of your browser window but it's convenient to just click a button which reveals back-link sources.

The add-on gets its information through mainly Google and Yahoo which you can actually do manually. As mentioned above, the manual command is:

(in Google type in the following in search) link:examplesite[.]com
(in Yahoo use Site Explorer) Site Explorer - Yahoo! Site Explorer
