Weird little observation (and a question) about the Warrior Forum . . .

I just noticed that there are always about 20% more people in the Warrior Special Offers Forum than here in the Main Discussion Forum.

That's just odd to me. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Any theories as to why that is?

    Hi BillyBee

I think that many marketers drive their own traffic (i.e. from their own lists) to their WSO's, which is going to boost the overall viewing figures.

Plus, a lot of marketers want a bargain

That's actually kind of like an illusion. Based on the forum statistics the Main discussion section is far more popular.

The stats take into account things like how long you stay in this section, how many posts and threads per day..etc..

Taking all those into account, the main section receives far more action than the WSO section.

I'm a little surprised no one has questioned this. If the forum stats say 1000 people are viewing the WSO subforum, and 650 people are viewing the Main Forum, that should be accurate. There are more people viewing WSOs than the main discussion.

What is the forum software doing?

Counting someone twice if they spend twice as long in the main forum and write a post?

Counting someone as half a person if they have spent less than a minute in a forum?

Without question, the main forum while necessarily get more posts and 'action', but I see that as a different issue from how many people are perusing different parts of the forum at any given time.

I always thought of this as an instant snapshot - at the moment you're visiting a forum home page the software is listing the number of other current visitors.

Not using some easy to manipulate statistical algorithm that can fudge the statistics.

I suppose one could visit, leave their computer on, and come back the next day. Not sure how the forum software counts that during the day.

But if the WSO subforum's numbers appear inflated, wouldn't that imply for the other subforums with lesser numbers that those lesser numbers are also inflated?

Basically, don't you hate it when it turns out something you've been taking at face value turns out differently? And a lot more complicated?

Kindsvater, I had the same questions you did after reading that post. Like you, I also thought it was an instant snapshot of who was actually in each forum.

Counting the unique IPs that have visited that forum in the past n seconds.

The forum is fundamentally incapable of telling whether or when you have left a particular page. It can only tell when you load one. Once you've loaded it, you might be looking at it, or you might not. So it just arbitrarily figures that if it's been less than n seconds, you're probably still looking at it. Some people look longer, some people not as long, and it all averages out in the end.

I'm probably missing something extremely elementary here, so forgive me, but I can't figure out why this is important...

Lisa, maybe you missed the subject line of this thread, which pointed out that this was just a weird little observation. No one claimed it was important.

Didn't mean to offend you. And no, I didn't miss the subject line.

I asked because I didn't know if you were possibly basing a decision such as when to post a WSO on this info. If that was the case, it would be important and therefore worth checking out.

No worries, Lisa, I wasn't offended. It was a reasonable question that deserved an answer a little less pithy than the one I gave you! And you do make a good point as to why this topic WOULD be important.

I meant overall action. As far as just people visiting, yes the WSO forum gets more visitors.

Every time I refresh the main discussion forum, there is another new thread. Based on what I've seen, the main forum is far more popular than the WSO section.

Sashas, that doesn't prove anything. It only proves that more people are posting in the main forum than on the WSO forum.

There could easily be a ton of people simply reading on the WSO forum and not posting. Which actually makes sense when you think about the purpose of both forums.

I think of the WSO as the shopping section, or "store," while the main discussion forum represents the public gathering area outside the store where people are sitting in chairs and chatting.

Maybe not the best analogy, but that's what came to mind.

I figured it more because people are looking for that Magic Pill which will skyrocket them to Google overnight - one which can only be found in the WSO section as opposed to the fantastic free advice available here.

David, that's the way I look at it, too. And that's why I wondered by the numbers wouldn't be reversed . . . but then it shouldn't be surprising at all.

And given what is contained in the War Room, probably an even better question is, How come 90% of the forum traffic isn't in THERE? (Including me at this moment!)

Here's the current top stats the forum shows:

Newest member to the forums [Walter Brown]

    Record online users 8358 (05-16-2009 03:30 AM)

Top poster [Steven Wagenheim - 14331]

Most replied to thread [FREE Page Rank 6 .Edu and Page Rank 5 .Gov Backlink! Free backlink packet!!]

Most viewed thread [6 Months Later: $300 Daily w/Adsense (Lessons Learned)]

Most popular forum [Main Internet Marketing Discussion Forum]
    ----

The forums definition of popular means which one gets the most action. Posts, replies..etc. Basing it on that the main room is the most popular.

If you base it on just hits alone then the WSO room is the most popular.

There was an earlier question about why this is important. Here are my thoughts:

There was another thread a couple months ago where people were trying to figure out how many people join the forum each day. I believe the best guess was about 200. Of course, that was based on numbers publicly reported by the forum software.

That's a lot of fresh people so its a good reminder that even though some 'old timers' have seen the same questions a thousand times over the years, it's still new to so many people. It also means these are new people who have never seen your sig line, so it is worth posting even if you feel like you've provided that same information before.

Assuming, of course, you feel like you have something valuable to offer.

But then the question is, where are these new people? If they are all hanging out in the programming subforum then you could bet I would be making more posts in the programming subforum.

If they are mainly in the WSO subforum that also tells me a lot. Are people looking for general information in the main forum? Or are they looking to buy? (Not that this is exclusive as much info in the main forum is better than some WSOs.)

Assume I want to sell something. Should I pay to post a WSO, or should I just post in the main forum and let people read my sig? (Again, not mutually exclusive.)

If I post a WSO, is my potential audience really the number being listed by the forum software, or is it much less because statistics are manipulated due to time spent, postings, etc.? To me, anyway, the validity of those numbers is important.

Apparently, the WSO subforum is as popular as the forum software is reporting. And, it is the most popular forum of its type on the net.

The numbers also tell me the relative important other people assign to different topics. For instance, twice as many people right now are viewing the Adsense / PPC forum as the Mind Warriors forum.

If I wanted to help out more Warriors, I would probably want to consider PPC issues as opposed to mind exercises - even though my personal belief is that mental issues are what ultimately differentiate the bank accounts of Warriors - not who knows the most PPC tricks.

I think the Warrior crowd is always a buying crowd. Warriors, in general, understand that you have to spend money to make money - and they're not afraid to do that. They are, however, rational and careful about where they spend it... so they're looking to the main forum to see who might be worth watching.

And when they go to the WSO forum, they're looking for names they recognise - whether it's as the producer of the WSO, or just a reviewer. There are a half-dozen or so people here that can convince me to buy a WSO, even if I'm unsure I want it and think the price is too high, just by leaving a good review in the WSO thread.

Assume I want to sell something. Should I pay to post a WSO, or should I just post in the main forum and let people read my sig? (Again, not mutually exclusive.)
I've run some tests on this, and it's been my personal conclusion that I make more sales from active posting than I make from bumping my WSO. I recently took one of my WSOs out of my signature; it dropped straight to "N/A" page views the next day and stayed there. I bumped a WSO and took the day off from posting; it got some views and made some sales, but honestly, a day of active posting revived it a lot better even when it was on page 6.

If I post a WSO, is my potential audience...
        Losers always whinge about potential.

Look, I don't mean to be a jerk, but every dog of a product I've seen touted by marketing has been full of discussions on the potential market and potential sales and potential success.

Millions of dollars and several months later, the actual product hits the street... where it finds no market, and no sales, and no success. And then everybody gets laid off.

But the potential! Oh, God, the potential! Who can blame us for that, right?

I can. Potential means nothing. If I put my product in front of two thousand people who don't want it, I will make a lot fewer sales than I will if I put it in front of twenty people who do.

I think human nature (and especially those of us involved in IM) is to look for a quick solution. Most of what is offered in the main forum is going to take effort and work, while WSO entails someone else doing the work for you.

Why spend 20 minutes writing an article when someone else can write it for $5?
