Setting up several wordpress sites quickly

Hello,

just a quick Wordpress question....

If I setup a new site, install a couple of themes & several plugins (also activate the plugins & configure if necessary) can I simply download the "wp-content" folder & upload it to any new Wordpress installations & all the plugins etc will be there & working correctly?

If this is not the case, is there a way of speeding up the process or do all plugins need to be individually installed on every new site?

  • You can take and copy the wp-content folder... but the plugins will NOT be active on the new blog because their status (active/inactive) and other settings) are stored in the database, which you didn't move over.
  • You could copy the whole wp-content folder but what I'd do is just copy the specific theme folder and the whole plug-in folder via ftp. It'd save a lot of time on uploading the whole wp-content directory.

    Like Istvan said though, the theme and plug-ins will still need to be activated manually.

    I haven't yet found a "one-solution" automated way to replicate the whole blog.
  • Actually, it can be done - if you are comfortable with phpMyadmin.

    Install the first blog, add the desired themes and plugins. Activate the plugins. (For themes you van have only one active theme)

    Take the whole WP installation (the files) and download it to serve as your future install package.

    Export the database tables form the first install.

    Go to the next site, edit the config file, upload the package. Do NOT run the install. Just have the empty DB created.
    phpMyadmin: Import the saved .sql file - then in the wp_options table edit the "home" and "site_url" values -> replace the old URL with the new one.

    Repeat - it should work.

    • The painful part is on the understanding part. Of course, when you want to replicate the blog, that sound like quite confusing to you. It took me a while to understand the process and right now I can install a blog with theme, plugins and all settings done (activated) in under 30 minutes.
  • I guess it is post# related - when you have enough posts, you will see a "Thanks" button right from the "Quick Reply".
  • Guess what, I have just the solution. I recently found a plug in call "plugin central". You can put a list of plug in's or plug in URL's and it will install them for you. Then you can mass activate them at the plug in menu.

    • Yes and no.

      That might work with plugins that don't need any kind of option settings from their own admin subpanel. If they do - you will still have to go through all of them manually to set the options as you want...

      Furthermore, anything that requires access to my FTP account in the background (i.e. without me connecting to it) is always a security risk. All these solutions with 'automated' upgrades, downloads, installations when you are not involved manually - present a risk. Even if they don't tell you!
