Weigh In - Numbers in Domain Names

OK, so I've found a solid niche with some sniper sites that make regular sales, and since it's a proven market, I'd like to build an authority site, build a list, etc.

Now, the domain name that I want is valuable SEO-wise, especially when combined with the usage of subdomains, but unfortunately it's not available in the format of "productsforniche.com".

So what I'm wondering is, for both branding purposes and SEO (and please, if you're weighing in on SEO, have experience or a reliable source, looking for facts here ) would a number in the domain name help, hurt, or do nothing?

Example of what I'm talking about, for anyone who may want to use this little SEO trick for themselves... If your site was books4fatloss.com you could use:

exercise.books4fatloss.com - exercise books
dieting.books4fatloss.com - dieting books, etc.

Weigh in, folks!

The main thing about numbers, especially 4, is when I am trying to tell someone, they end up spelling it rather than using the number, so that is the main problem I have seen.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I dont agree. I would NEVER type in the actual 'four' in fatloss4idiots. I have 2 Domains that utilize '4' instead of 'four'. And they have worked fine !!

You will be surprised how many people will remember a site like digitalcameras4u.com before they would remember digitalcamerasforyou.com. Just my humble opinion !!

I don't think that having a number in your domain name will hurt.

I have a few domains where I have used the number 4 instead of for.

The best one is a three year old domain where the home page is Pr 2 (at the moment). It ranks on page one of google for the main keyword and page 1 to 2 for a number of other keywords. And makes me two to three affiliate sales per week.

Of course I cannot tell if I would have done better with my first choice of domain name because it was not available.

But it is possible to make money from a domain with a number in it.
