Don't spread yourself too thin...

I made a huge mistake recently when I completely forgot about one of my old websites. It was something I worked on about 5 months ago. I had thrown out about 100 articles and few podcasts. It was having no luck at the time though. It was getting maybe 10 viewers a day. At the time I was working on it, I hadn't had any success with IM and I was jumping from thing to thing praying something would catch. This one wasn't working out so I stopped working on it and went to the next thing. That was one of my major problems I had back then.

I had pretty much completely forgot about it until late last night. I decided to check the stats on it and for the past 2 weeks I have gotten over 300 views a day on it. All 300 come from a authority site in the niche that apparently liked one of my articles.

I checked my email for this site and I had over 50 emails from viewers that had questions about the topic. Prospects just waiting to give me money lol. I'm glad I already had a small autoresponder set up with it or I could of left a lot of money on the table.

So just a word of advice, don't jump around from niche to niche too much and keep an eye on ALL your sites.

Travis

I'll second that! I had been working doggedly on a couple of sites for months. One, in particular was built up quite nicely, had lots of backlinks to it, tons of content, 20 or so articles on EZA pointing back to it, etc. Well. I got in a huge slump, emotionally and mentally, and totally removed myself from everything I had been doing online for a few months. Eventually, I came out of my snit and went poking back around my sites and stats, etc. only to find that my domain name had expired during my little "vacation"

So now I have all sorts of backlinks all over the place pointing to my site that is now parked by someone else. What a pi$$-off!! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

Lesson to all - if you need time away and need to step back awhile - by all means do what you need to do, but for God's sake, at least check your email once in awhile! Don't let that happen to you!

Great Post - I was just thinking about this last week.

We spend so much time on research, getting the site built up and submitting those initial articles/building backlinks and then it is like we hit a wall or get distracted an move on to another project instead of going just that little extra and spending a few minutes/hours every day just giving these old sites just a little love.

I will enjoy seeing what others have to say.

I have to say that I'm also guilty of this. After working hard on a site that wasn't really working out I basically forgot about it until like you, I started to notice some good traffic coming to it months later. Now I keep a notebook of all my site just so I can occasionally check up on them.

That's a bummer. At least you learn from your mistakes though. I got lucky to even catch mine.

Great reminder Travis. It's certainly hard sometimes to not jump from project to project. As a marketer I'm always looking for sites that convert now instead of later. So I know exactly what you're warning against. Now to put it into practice...

let me add another stupidity: running a Google adwords campaign to drive traffic to a site, then go on 'little vacation' as Melanie puts it.

let's put it this way: my wife wasn't overly pleased when she opened the credit-card statement and saw the bill from Google ... hey, I had a daily limit of $100....

The key to managing a lot of niche sites are good project management skills and automation.

Totally agree here. If I wouldn't of had the automated email capture system set up for the niche site, I would of lost all those viewers.

I have 3 white boards in my room for project management. Too bad I work with more then 3 niches lol. I need more white boards....

indeed. but sometimes it gets boring, waiting for your site's traffic to pick up.

it may have been a good thing that you went off and did something else. so now you have multiple revenue streams.

Exactly. That's why I resurrected my old MMO blog... even though I'd abandoned it for awhile it was still getting traffic. When I picked it up again I thought, "I'm glad I got a bunch of stuff already set up," so the process becomes that much easier.

I changed directions since picking it up again, adding a more personal note to it. It's not really going to get very far until I actively promote it, but I'm only doing that once I get my autoresponder set up...

This is something I learned the hard way too. In the latter part of last year, I jumped from site to site, niche to niche and it just took me further and further away from my goals because I wasn't giving enough time to the important sites and projects I had.

A couple of these sites flopped - i.e they didn't convert as well as I thought they would and didn't rank as well as I thought they would That's inevitable if you have a lot of sites, some are going to do well and some aren't. I still have something like 15 domains, but I concentrate on 4 or 5 of those, and especially one of them. In terms of the rest, I'm probably going to flip most of them. If you aren't putting enough into a site for whatever reason, there is someone out there that will, so it's worth thinking about flipping.

With one of my sites, I hadn't touched it for months and didn't realize how good the on page SEO is. Not only that, but it gets organic visitors every single day. With some concentrated effort, I know this site could do very well, but it's not my priority at the moment. I'm considering flipping that one too.

Bottom line - in my opinion it's all too easy to spread ourselves too thin, it kind of goes with the territory, but it's going to move you further away from your goals in the long run if you don't prioritize and have a workable plan of action

Amen brother, I know exactly what you are talking about. It is so easy to take on multiple things and neglect one of your projects. This is why it is so important to make sure that you are doing one thing at a time and know exactly what you need to do next.

    OOoooo goodness!

Im a prime example of someone who use to spread themselves too thin!

I was working like you 'work' that last piece of butter left in the tub to get it over as many pieces of toast as you can and yet knowing that you will never be able to cover the edges!!!

Then i took drastic action and instead of flipping them all and making some 'quick' cash, i decided to just delete them all and be done with them.

    FOCUS IS THE KEY!

This used to be my biggest problem as well. I would not stick to one thing move on and never have success. If I could go back I would pick something and stick to it.

  • Spreading yourself thin or casting a wide net? Seems to me that you did something right if a site you had just forgotten about started getting decent traffic. Do whatever you did with that site with 10 other sites, and you're in business.
