General non-niche site-What to do?

All the sites I run nowadays are tightly focused on a niche subject or sub-niche.

Be it finance, weight-loss, whatever, they are all built around one subject, which makes it easier to build around keywords, have a site title that fits the niche, and have a report to give away that will interest my audience etc.

However when I started in IM, my first site was very generally aimed at men. Within the site I dealt with mens health, relationships and the like.

After a while I stopped working on the site as I found it too unfocused, and found it difficult working out how to rank such a general site.

The thing is one product I promoted on the site in teh relationship niche, still makes sales today, and it is mainly WOMEN buying the product.

So my question is, with a general interest site, how do you get the site ranking in the serps as a whole, or do we just concentrate on getting our inner pages to rank.

In other words should I just be looking at getting the relationship section to rank for itself, the mens health section to rank for itself etc, thus increasing the overall site ranking?

I did have an autoresponder set up as always on the site, but again with it being a general mens interest site, I can't fathom what I could give away as visitors may get to the home page, via an inner page about prostate problems for example!


As the site is making sales and has some good backlinks I want to get back to work on it, but being so programed to work on niche specific sites, I am a bit unsure what to do with it!

Pardon this post sounding like it is coming out of the mouth of an incoherent drunk, with a mouthful of burger! I have man flu and am trying to type on a tiny notebook keyboard!!

    An article directory for instance will get ranked for many different subjects all falling under different niches so ranking isn't an issue for your site as Google will still index each individual inner page.

    If you are looking for the TLD of the site to be indexed and ranked for a certain keyword you should choose a keyword and insert it (them) into your title tag and meta description.

    It sounds like you have a "mens health" (the magazine) type of site. Where you tackle pretty much any and all issues related to men.

    Start a newsletter!!

    You don't need to "give anything away" to build a list.

    The posts/articles on the site/blog act as a way of establishing expertise and credibility.

    Place an optin box on the sidebar of the site. Have a strong call to action underneath each piece of content to get people to sign up for the newsletter.

    But you need to start building some type of list especially if you are already making affiliate sales from the sites that mean that BUYERS are visiting....

    Good idea about the newsletter Mark. Guess i've got so used to building lists via squeeze pages, I have got a little pigeon holed recently.

    To rank for something as broad as "men" it would have to be a huge content site. You're really free to create any kind of content that appeals to men, so focus on topics like you're used to in creating in your tightly focused niche sites. Basically, you want to create multiple tightly focused niches under the general banner of men. You'll get ranked for the tightly focused sub-niches that way, and may eventually rank for the broader topic of men.

    Google "men" and look at the top few sites and you should come away with all kinds of ideas for content.

    Thank you Dennis. So really I am looking at mini sites under an umbrella! Now i'm thinking static pages for each mini niche and a general blog post set up for news, gadget releases etc! Now the brains ticking!

      I'm trying to move up a level from being a "Bum Marketer". I'm facing the same questions as you are.I have a general site for the niche "Wellness' with several affiliate links. My thinking is I'll get people who visit the site because of an article on yoga who also may be interested in back pain relief. I'm currently test marketing the idea we'll see how it goes.
