whats the best firewall??

hey guys,

I noticed a thread on the best anti virus and a lot mentioned avast and nod32 and a few other contenders, are these all anti virus only or do they include a firewall?

What firewall do you recommend, currently Im using comodo, but what do you guys use??

Also as an overall protection do you use an all in one or separate? you need a firewall and anti virus, how about real time scanning and the ones that are after the fact scanners?

Ok basically Im asking what are you guys using as your entire protection system? Paid or free this is one thing you shouldn't skimp on but where to spend your money??

thanks
andy

I use a router as my firewall.

Other than that Nod32 and spybot is all I use.

I have used regular old FREE Zone Alarm for over 5 years.
And have never had any problems with spyware or any of
the other malware associated with no firewalls. I like it so
much that I started buying their ant virus subscription
software a couple of years ago and have been very satisfied
      with its performance.

But, Zone Alarm firewall is the standard.

Earlier this year, I asked some of my friends as well as read what Consumer Reports had to say, and I ended up choosing Kaspersky. I have been happy with my decision, and what has been really nice is the software does not slow my computer down like some others in the past.

I used ZoneAlarm with AVG free for a couple of years, with no problems, they seemed to keep my computer out of trouble.

3 Months ago I moved to ZoneAlarm Security Suite (and dropped AVG of course).

      Cheers,

I have to agree with the others...zone alarm is great and the free version is better than some firewalls you may spend over $100 for.

What was nice about Kaspersky is I paid like $50 for 3 licenses, so I was able to put in on more than one computer.

I use a Cisco Router with Firewall and IDS active for my network.

As for each PC I use Bitdefender it's great Anti-virus and Personal Firewall.
It works our to be approx $25.00 a PC yr (Around $20USD yr per PC) I have 3 PC license.

I've used Zone Alarm and Commodo in the past and they all work well.

Another favorite Anti-virus is Sophos works treat although I wouldn't recommend using as a firewall just AV.

I recommend get a combination of both Hardware and software security if you have more than 2 PC's at home if not then software should be fine

Interestingly, this time my phone company provided the router for me. I have mixed feelings about this. They can even access the router remotely!

That's actually a good thing it means they manage it, so they should have automated systems to update it and maintain the network security between yourself and them.

I use the free version of ZoneAlarm. I like it. Remember, using a firewall is no excuse for not creating complete backups of your computer and rotating passwords and practicing common sense when on the internet.

How do they access your router? Can you just change the admin password to it? Or do they have a special admin account that overrides your login to the router. If you are behind a router and don't have any open incoming ports open you should be fine. But if you wan't to be extra sure, I used zone alarm back when I had only one pc hooked up to directly to my modem. The new versions of zone alarm have spyware protection built in too which is conveinent.
