I Need Help on Transferring a Website!

I am transferring a website from BlueHost to HostGator.

I am following a step by step guide but am having some trouble.

After I select all the files to compress them, I choose zip archive. Now it says to choose the name you want to call this file.

~Is that supposed to be a name like Dogtraining Website? Or a full public_html/............/dogtraining.zip Am I supposed to include cgi.bin with this?

~ So I click compress files and it seems to work. Then I click close. I go over to PHP My Admin and look for the database but I don't see it. Do I need to export the compressed files over to PHP My Admin?

Thanks so much....

One of the services many web hosts offer is to transfer your site for you, and I believe Hostgator is one who will. Save yourself the hassle.

Go onto live chat with them and talk it over. They've got great support.

      Hi

I assume you are talking about transfer databases.
After you have zipped your old db. You must of course
import it into your new phpmyadmin.

If you know you old db user and db name. Try create the
same on your new host. Then go to PHPMyAdmin. Select
you clean db and select import from the top and all should
      be imported.

Yes, I've had this problem also. I'm not absolutely sure, but the original host must point the files to the new host. By saying that I'm not sure that the actual files are transfered, but just somesort of handshake between the two hosting companies.

If anyone does truly understand how this works I would really like to know as well.

    Regards,

  • There is a little more to it.

You have to move the website files (php, htm, html, etc) from one host to the other. Depending on the server setup of the account this can be completed either by compressing the entire sites content and moving the compressed file from one server to the other, OR, you have to download the site via FTP and re-upload it to the new host via FTP. Once the site has been moved you have to ensure the same folder/file permissions are in place on the new host in order for the site to function correctly.

The database has to be backed up and moved to the new host. Once moved the database has to be imported into the new host. If the database name, user, or password has been changed this has to be updated within the website's script files.

After the site and associated databases have been moved you need to update the domain's name server to reflect the new host's name servers. In other words you have to point the domain to the new hosting account.

I suggest you hire someone to complete the task for you if you are unsure about the process. This will ensure your site is not only transferred correctly, but also ensures your site does not experience down time as a result of an error from the move.

No ... only the sites files. You do not need cgi-bin with it. Should be any simple name like dogsite.zip or whatever.

Your database will be in phpMyadmin. If you don't know the name of it, download your wp-config.php file and open it and it will tell you the name of it. Then click on the database in phpMyadmin and export the database to your hard drive.

Hostgator probably would do this for you. I'd check with them, unless you want to do it for the experience, which is always a good thing to learn.

Thanks for the explanation of how this works...very complicated indeed. If Hostgator will do the job, that seems to be the easiest route. Its not like you do this every day, so no need to spend a lot of time trying to learn the process.

Hostgator will do this free if it is a new hosting account. They transferred two sites for me to purchasers.

However, if it is not a new Hostgator account, they told me they charge $70 an hour.

Time to figure out how to move a site!
