Did you ever refund the wrong person?

by Scott Ames 15 replies
Oops.. I gave a refund then the next day the person sent an email asking when it will come. Checking into things I realized I sent the refund to the wrong person. Have you ever done that?

I wonder what the customer thought when they got an unexpected refund...

Nope. But I've paid a JV Partner more than what he earned. About $30. Not enough to ask him to return me the money.

Yes - I did that once lol.
I thought to myself a few seconds later - "What a moron - you just refunded the wrong person".

They emailed me wondering why and I explained the problem. They offered to repay but I said that was not necessary as it was my mistake.

They continue to be a good customer when I create new products.

I've done it a few times. What's worse is I have had CB issue a refund for a product that I had never had a refund on. I emailed the customer to ask what I could have done to keep their business, and they informed me that they hadn't requested the refund! I never did get that one worked out.

I've never done that, but I once posted the wrong item to a customer on ebay. I realised as soon as I got back from the post office, because the right item was still sitting on the table. I fired up the computer while I tried to think what I could say to her that wouldn't make me sound too inept, and then turned to my inbox to find another order from her. For the product I'd just sent. I imagine the chances of that happening are small!

If I can do that with a physical product, it must be an easy mistake to make with money that's never 'seen'.

Turn it into opportunity - email the person you refunded that as a thank you to your customers, you decided to "give" the product to one of your loyal customers on occasion (that would be on occasions where you goof but he doesn't need to know that).

As long as you are out the money anyway, might as well get some positive spin from it.

That is so funny! I can't even calculate the chances of that happening. The customer must have thought you were an extremely fast shipper!

No, but I've refunded the occasional customer that I've chosen to fire, even when they didn't want a refund.

(Why would I do that? If you've ever had to do it, you'll know why!)

Then you get the nasty "I didn't want a refund" email, which you can happily ignore.

        Cheers,

    Had done this before.

In my case, two person with the same first name ordered, and one requested for a refund. I refunded the other person as i was rushing out that particular day.

Did feel stupid about it for one whole week.

Now Imagine doing that and then also sending a 300$ package to a wrong address for a customer who had already received their item... well 60$ for me 300 for them haha karma sucks..

I refunded to the wrong order once, then I contacted payment customer service and asked them to cancel the refund. And they did that after 1 day, so I got the $ back.

The refund is not immediately (when uses paypal/2checkout), chances are that you can still cancel it if you found the error early.

I have never refunded the wrong person, but I did have someone pay me twice on ebay for the same item, throught Paypal. The poor guy got so upset, when he discovered it, that he called me on the phone. He thought that when you paid with Paypal, it went into the other person's account immediately. I just transferred the extra payment back for him.

If you are a fairly new customer, and the payment is substantial, Paypal will sometimes hold your money up to 30 days to make sure there are no refund request. Of course this is only for tangible items that you have to mail out.

I, personally, haven't done it. But my assistant has. The refunds process pretty easy on our shopping cart program.. and all I heard was "Oh sh*t" Luckily it wasn't a huge amount and I let the whole thing slide.
She beat herself up far more than anything I would've said.. and it hasn't happened again.

The customer was surprised and was worried we just "fired" them.
